There may very well be a technical reason behind it, we being the general public, do not know what that reason is and we may never know.

I think 150MB is a very generous amount. Podcast is 11MB, Find Friends is 5MB, Find my iPhone is 5MB. I would say more like 100MB max for every single app.

Craig Ferderighi said in an interview that the "removable" apps combined would make up just under 150mb. I'm going to believe him vs a random forum user's "guess".

Well, the information is on Apple's support page about it all at https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204221 basically saying that all together these apps take up less than 150 MB.

And that's what I said...twice in this thread.

Under 150mb. Which means less than.

Them giving the 150mb value means it's close to 150 but still less than. If it was much lower and closer to say 100 they would say a little more than 100mb or around 125mb.

Sure, simply pointing out that there's actual documentation about it all (vs. what might have been mentioned in an interview or something like that).

And I guess spending many man hours recoding your OS to save less than 150mb isn't really worth your time. So hiding the icons has the same net result.
