One would think Google had a 100 year head start on Apple. They have text message bubbles for street names, really?
It will direct you to the App Store to download apple maps. Ludicrous.

This hasn't been confirmed unfortunately. There's the ability to remove stock apps and there's an intents system but we haven't quite had that final piece of the puzzle confirmed and it's not clear that all the necessary APIs exist to completely replace stock apps (nor that every developer would be willing to completely implement them if they were - the biggest issue with the entire concept imo) While it's not a big deal to me because I use all the stock apps I'd be happy to see it happen just to stop the incessant posts on the subject.
Apple Maps has routed me to the wrong location half a dozen times now, and last time I checked their POI data wasn't as robust or up to date as Googles.
I've honestly just given up on it at this point.
I don't understand the pull of Google Maps... I've never had issues with Apple Maps that I haven't had with any other personal navigation solution from Garmin Nuvis to any of several Map apps... Stockholm Syndrome with Google Maps??
Google Maps still shows my house as a big field, which it was in 2000, but not when it was built and we bought it in 2002. Over the last 3 years, multiple reports sent to Google to fix this, but no joy.
That's unfortunate. Google's map images have been updated just about every 2-3 years where I live, so I've never had that issue.

When I first used apple maps it tried to direct me to drive into a field by telling me to turn right when the correct and only possible turn was left. After that I stopped using it. A while later I decided to see if it was any better, and it told me to drive down railroad tracks. After that I was done with it. My wife uses it sometimes, and it generally seems to choose longer routes than Google maps does to go between the same two points.I don't understand the pull of Google Maps... The only thing that I've found to like more in Google Maps is adding another point on a route (stopping at a restaurant or gas station) and when coming up on an exit or turn, it will show you which lane to get in or which lane is a turn lane etc. other than that, I personally find Apple maps to be just as good.
It's just better. I mostly use Apple Maps because of CarPlay, but some of the roads in my area were redone a couple years ago and still aren't updated in Apple Maps (despite me even sending them in to Apple!), whereas Google Maps has had the proper roads for a while (new traffic circles, some roads were removed entirely, etc.). Also, turn-by-turn navigation in Google Maps actually advises you which lane you should be in.
Why is it ludicrous? There is no standard URL scheme for sending addresses to apps. What is Apple to do? How would it send the data to google maps? They could hardcore Gmaps current custom scheme now, but that's changed once before.
Waze is great but it also has its shortcomings like having you make a thousand rights and lefts to save a minute.Forget Apple Maps and Google Maps, if you are driving, just use Waze, problem solved.
Yours is an interesting version of what really happened. The facts are that Apple signed a contract for a particular version of Maps from Google that they integrated with the phone that was pretty much fixed. Not sure if it was a two or three year contract but when the contract was coming to an end Apple refused to pay more for an updated version of Google Maps and decided they could save money and do it just as well. We know how that turned out. Google maps on the iPhone was not getting updates because that is what Apple had contracted for and integrated with their system. It's the same reason as why every country has its own army, plus its own water and electrical supply, even if a case could be argued that it might be more economical to outsource those functions to an independent third party.
There are some aspects of your own platform that you just have to do yourself, or at least, have a foot in the race to serve as a hedge in case someone tries to play you out.
Which was what happened to Apple. Google deliberately screwed up Maps on iOS when Apple refused to give them more user data than they were comfortable with. If you were using an iPhone during iOS 4 and 5, you would know how badly the maps app sucked. It wasn't until iOS 6 with the botched Maps app that Google finally released their own updated Google Maps app.
Apple Maps may never be as good as Google and I am perfectly fine with that. I do use Apple Maps exclusively because it has been good enough for me, but the bottom line is this - Apple having its own maps app at least keeps Google on their toes and incentivises them to keep updating their own services on iOS to ensure that they remain better than what Apple has to offer, and everybody wins.
Or even better try "Here" In my view on of the best navigation systems for the phone and it uses off line data and is completely free. This was originally owned by Nokia but was bought by a consortium of Car manufacturers including BMW and Mercedes Benz.Forget Apple Maps and Google Maps, if you are driving, just use Waze, problem solved.

How is this even a debate/topic? Google Maps is obviously more fully featured and robust, and more accurate for the majority of situations.
Not for me in my area. Thanks for deciding for everyone though.
Google maps is still better, but iOS 10 pushes Apple maps forward by leaps and bounds. It recommends faster routes now, lets you pan and preview the route, and hooks into parkopedia for parking locations, which is a major oversight that google doesn't include.Apple Maps has routed me to the wrong location half a dozen times now, and last time I checked their POI data wasn't as robust or up to date as Googles.

ok, maybe in your area, Apple Maps is more accurate, but it doesn't change the fact the Google Maps is more robust, with more features. Also, in most reported areas, Google Maps in more accurate.
How about posting side by side comparisons to show that your experience is different from what most see with Apple maps.Apple Maps more accurate AND robust in my area than Google maps. If you're going to quote my post, don't then alter what I've said.
Google maps navigation tries to send you 2 miles away when going to my road, despite multiple notifications from lots of people to Google to fix it over the last 6 years. Satellite view shows an image from about 15 years ago, when the housing estate didn't exist, again this has been reported multiple times over the years from many people in the area. Apple Maps has been updated at least twice in the last 2 years, as we can tell due to a couple of new roads that only were finished 9 months ago being show on satellite view 6 months ago.
Also, apparently the pub that's half a mile away, Google Maps says is 3 doors down. Apple Maps has this correct.
It's funny seeing people praising google Maps as infallible, it's not. Apple Maps aren't either, but at least they're improving constantly, even in my area, when Google Maps has not had any development in the entire time Apple Maps has been available.
