Anywhere but here
i am finally gonna taking the plunge and either a dell 2405 lcd or an ACD 23."
i am hesitant about buying the acd 23" because of all the pinkish hue on the screen. does anyone know if the newer batch of 23" acd's exhibit the same color problems? i am currently leaning towards purchasing the dell because of the known issues with the 23" acd and because the 2405 is five hundred dollars cheaper. but the design of the apple lcd looks so much nicer than the dell.

what do you guys think? which one should i get?

I'm a big fan of Dell's LCDs becuase of the added features they have such as multiple video input ports and a built-in USB hub. However, if you really have to have the complete Apple setup then go with an ACD.

If you wish to spend the extra cash for an al bezel then get the ACD. I for one prefer function and design. While the dell is not white or silver, it is nice and functional. I am very happy with my choice. I've heard more rave reviews about the dell 20" then the acd 20". While the 20 and 23" acd have reportedly different reviews, I can only compare what I own. I would save your bucks just a bit and go dell. I am also SERIOUSLY impressed with Dell's Customer service in the way that they handed me $58 a week after my monitor was sent to me because they dropped in price. I asked and they gave, one 2 line e-mail was all it took.
That impressed me greately.

i recently got the dell 24". i like the picture quality. very bright, good contrast. don't know about color calibration. i'm not a pro so i don't know how good the dell is there.

the best feature for me is the portrait mode. finally you get a decent excel sheet on the screen.

came to like the picture in picture function for combining web surfing, work and seinfeld.

the price with cupon was US $779.

Mmmmm...you've got me thinking a swiveling VESA wall mount.... :D That would be so great. :)

two small negatives about swivelling:

if you have many usb/video cables it makes swiveling a little bit iffy.

the mac doesn't sense the rotations so you have to go to system prefs and change the orientation manually.

but if you change it only now and then it's great.

If you got the money and you are willing to spend it...........ACD, if not Dell. ;)

ACD = Matching setup....nice"er" design cable managment.....apple ;)

I would get the ACD in a second if there were not for the constant reports of pinkish discoloration issues with it. I am not the only one who feels sqeamish about spending $1400 on a screen that has a pinkish hue at every Apple store I have been to.

I am most likely gonna get the dell or save up for the 30" ACD.

Im in the exact same boat right now! how strange...I am debating these 2 also...I think i am gonna go with the Dell because 1. the price, and 2. I have heard that the "guts" of the two are the same LCD...even if that is false Im gonna get the dell...but then again...the apple looks so glorious...AHHH ok now im undecided...

Supposedly a newer batch of the 23" ACD's are not pink. The first batch was, but any batch after that should be ok...when buying one you just have to make sure you are getting a recent display.

They should be very returnable for that, right? I mean... no one asked Apple to brag about the SWOP certification of their displays. But if they're going to put that out there, then they better hold to it.

I did two color calibrations on the 2001FP here and I'm still not as satisfied as my iBook's screen.... Maybe I need to keep trying.

What about the 20inch ACD? Im switching to a PM 2.0 and i really want the apple display, any known issues?

in canada its $999 for the 20inch, what do other displays compare in pricing?

I really want the mac set-up, sick of everything PC..

Also just to let you know if you are a student in college, chances are your school qualifies for the student discount from apple and dell...i know apples is about $100 off the ACD's and you can buy 2 of them at that price, and Dell's is similar but not as good...not quite sure what it is...

Ar far as I know the 20" ACD does not suffer from the same pink hue issues as the 23" ACD.

Honestly, I'd go with dual 20" ADC monitors instead of one bigger display, but that's just me. Great for video editing, not so good with games. What do you do on your Mac? Design stuff, or regular email, web, Office type stuff?

As far as the 20" ACD goes.....

I had a huge internal debate earlier between the Dell FPW2005 20" and the ACD 20". The screens are identical, though the gear inside is different, and, <sigh> the price difference was 300 dollars. I ended up buying the Apple and have not regretted it one bit. You buy Apple monitors because of the way that they are designed, as much as the actual screen itself, and the 20" ACD just rocks. I do kind of wish there were a jack for me to hook up my PS2, but I'm doing just fine.

But as for the 2405 vs. the 23" ACD... I'd be tempted to say go for the 2405. I've seen screenshots of it, and it just looks really, really good. Plus if there's a degree of uncertainty about the 23" ACD, then that's all the more reason. Plus, 500 bucks is 500 bucks. Although, ya know, the dual 20" ACD's is an interesting idea too. :)

The Apple 20" ACD is a fine display and it's shameful that the 23"s were so problematic.

The Dell 24" may not have the external cosmetics of the Apple 23",
but the quality of the display itself is phenomenal.

The LCD is made by Samsung in the Dell 24"

As you can see from other people's posts, Dell prices vary widely

from $780ish to $999.00 depending on Coupons or School/Business
discount eligibility.

I decided on the 2405 mostly on the basis of the pink hue issue with the 23" ACD. The other inputs are also really handy, I have my G5, G4, TV and PS2 connected and the PIP is nice too. Also, the black bezel fits better with my setup. It has a great picture and I like the height adjustment.

Also, as for getting an ACD and returning it--I spoke to the manager at the Apple Store, who claimed to have no knowledge of the "pink" issue which all their 23" displays had, and he agreed to a 14 day no questions return policy; I declined. So that may help you too.

Go with the Dell...just got mine in today, and this monitor kicks ass! Didn't even imagine it being this good :D

I was in a similar situation with the 20" inchers. In the end I went with the ACD and haven't regretted it at all. I figured the display is something I was going to have for a long time and the benefits the dell had (price) was something that didn't overcome the beauty of the ACD. I also like the firewire ports on the ACD....

My display is the centre-piece of my computing life and I just couldn't bring myself to look at the Dell. Fickle and pretentious probably but I'm really happy with it :).

The Dell is an amazing screen. We had several 2005FPW's at school sitting right next to the Apple 20" ACDs and the Dell's picture quality was just as good. And then you start to add in the extra functionality and the lower price... it just makes sense.

I bought a 2405FPW to take to college, and this screen is awesome! It's so huge, and the picture is perfect. Very bright and contrasty, and not a single dead pixel. And as far as the black plastic vs. aluminum goes, I actually prefer the black. It just fits in my setup better, since the speakers next to the screen are black, as well as the wall behind it. So at night with the lights off, I don't even see the bezel to the screen, just one huge glorious display :D

Also, someone mentioned Dell's excellent customer service... I also got a refund credit to their store. I bought the monitor at $900, and when It dropped to $800 about 10 days later, I just sent them an email and they offered me a $75 credit to their online store. I've even heard some reports of people getting cash refunds as well.

OK I'm done. Just buy the Dell :)

how can they be the same lcd, they are different sizes

When I build my next PC (gaming), I plan on getting a Dell FP... I love the looks of the ACDs, but the price difference is just too much for me to ignore.
