Dell building 15 inch "Air" version...

Well, it will probably have 1366x768 resolution which makes the 15" screen obsolete. Unless it has 1600x900 or 1920x1080 (assuming it's 16:9), it doesn't sound appealing. 15" screen with low res is useless extra weight and form factor. I rather take a small screen with high resolution and gain the every last bit of portability.

Of course, I'm making assumptions but the screen size alone doesn't matter. Resolution is far more important IMO.

This is a bad idea. People looking for ultraportable laptops will look for smaller than 15 inches, even 13 inches is a bit too much imo. A 15 inch super thin machine will have reduced specs over a "regular thickness" machine.

Can't these companies provide at least some level of innovation, rather than just copying Apple's design cues?

Why do people keep calling everything thats similar to an Apple product a "killer"? It really just makes people look dumb.

The Dell is rumored to get a much better GPU(Nvidia 525), CPU and only be $999, Dell also states that is is full 1080 HD.
The Adamo was killed off months ago so that they could make this. They are taking what they learned from that project into this one.

again, a 15 inch is not ultraportable. One could buy a thicker&heavier alternative of this for $700 with much better specs.

I picked the 11 inch because I carry my MBA around, and I am sure most 11 users would agree that we didn't go for the 13 inch because we wanted to maximize portability. I have no idea why they think there is any need for a 15 inch ultra portable. If there is such a thing as having the number 15 and ultra portable in the same sentence.

I'm not sure it's physically possible to have it weigh the same as a 13 MBA and be 15. Also are there even any specs on this thing anywhere?

Seriously. I have two MacBook pros and even I get annoyed with the Windows bashing. Most Windows haters just don't know how to use it, and there for it's "terrible." It really shows off how immature this site can be.

What do you expect it to be? What is a Mac? Just a nice PC with OS X. If all you care about is OS X, then why do you even look at what the PC competitors are?

The XPS series is made to compete with the MBP line of laptops. Although the current XPS15 has a nice screen, people complained that it was too bulky. I think this is Dell's response to these complaints.

If Dell manages to keep the gorgeous screens and high resolution on these laptops, while trimming the chassis, then this is a very interesting entry into the multimedia laptop market.

The few pictures I've seen I'm not too impressed. Not sure of the specs, and really don't care. I guess I'm a minimalist, and don't care for the top of the lid, and that odd lip near the back? I actually think the Adamo, or Alamo, or whatever it was called, was better looking. I think that footprint, and whatever newer specs would have been better.

Windows 7? I could care less. If it comes with it, I'll take it. If they had an option for nothing on it, I'd get that and use Linux.

Wow ok just jump the gun why don't you. Nothing in that one line post was bashing Windows. Also don't assume anything about people. My main is a home built Intel i7, dual nvidia 9800 GTS in SLI, 8 gigs of ram, and 500 gb hard drive in RAID 0 configuration PC. I know how to use PCs and I find both systems offer pros and cons. If you want me to elaborate on my post in hopes to keep the tread on topic:

So this laptop is a typical PC that does not offer anything in terms of innovation besides industrial design? If it offered, say a discrete GPU while holding it's form then maybe...

Just curious, why do you assume that XPS15z wont offer most of the optional features offered in the regular XPS15 series?
(i.e. GT525M and 15.6 FHD B+RGLED, 1920x1080)

Considering that it is actually bigger than the 15" MBP, it doesn't seem to pack anything revolutionary in it. Discrete GPU would just make it on par with the other offerings.

Just found this on Dell Malaysia (Time difference means they post their stuff earlier)

Now if the battery life is decent, this will be pretty sexy.

EDIT: I can't believe neither Engadget nor Slashgear have noticed that the laptop is up on the Dell Malaysia website. They should hire me.

Not all dGPu are created equal.

1080 FDH display
In my book this is a win over the MBP

525 GPU is better than the 15in Entry lv MBP (staying in the same price range)

8Hrs 22min of battery, thats 80 more that the MBP

Probably the same CPU options.

It's only a bit bigger, but if it means better cooling and battery than the MBP then I'm all for it. For about $1,200 you can have what hardware with is better than the $1,700 MBP and almost as good as the 2k+ version (GPU aside).
