Earlier teaser video didn't seem like it was anything crazy, but now that I see it on the Malaysia site it looks really good.

4 Gigs of RAM standard. Good.

NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 525M 1GB graphics. Amazing

500GB 7200RPM Hard Drive. Once you go solid you don't go back.

Intel® CoreTM i5 2410M Processor (2.3GHz/3MB cache). The new standard.

Why are some review sites like Engadget reporting it as the worlds thinest laptop when it measures .97 inches while the MBA is .68?

Edit: "The worlds thinnest 15 inch laptop."

Edit 2: Wait the MBP is .95 inches thick. I'm calling shenanigans.

Overall looks like Dell's MBP.

PCMag already has a review out for this. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2385682,00.asp

I kind of like it, but it is a bit to large for my taste. Now if it was a 14in with same res(or even 1600x900) with same color gamut(suppose to be up there) and screen quality that could have me sold. Unless, some how Apple can bring out an Ivy Bridge update to the 11.6in Air by the end of summer with little less bezel, higher gamut matte display and price really hasn't changed.

Not all dGPu are created equal.

1080 FDH display
In my book this is a win over the MBP

525 GPU is better than the 15in Entry lv MBP (staying in the same price range)

8Hrs 22min of battery, thats 80 more that the MBP

Probably the same CPU options.

It's only a bit bigger, but if it means better cooling and battery than the MBP then I'm all for it. For about $1,200 you can have what hardware with is better than the $1,700 MBP and almost as good as the 2k+ version (GPU aside).

8 hours on a Windose laptop? Id have to see it to beleive it.

PCMag was able to get 6 hours 22 minutes in their tests vs the 15in MacBook Pro at 4 hours and 40 minutes(seems about 45min to short, but I could be wrong). I guess we will have to see what other test and reviews have to say about that.

So Dell copies the Macbook design and makes it a bit cheaper? Could that mean that it will break a bit easier than the Mac, leaving you to deal with Dell's wonderful "customer service?"

Advertise it as "thin and light" when it's 5.6 lbs?

Adamo lost to the Air. This book will likely lose to the Mac Pro, even though it's cheaper. Why get the copy, when you can have the real thing?

Thin and light for $1000? Buy an Air. Need a bit more power (the rare one of us who really does): buy a Pro for $1300-1500.

Not sure where this fits in. I used to love Dell. Now it's like a death watch.

Engadget's review has also noticed this - the MBP is thinner (by a tiny amount), whilst the Dell is ever so slightly lighter.

From where I'm sitting, Dell have basically released a cheaper MBP by cutting corners (such as unibody enclosure replaced with less rigid/solid construction) - which is a good thing for those who can't afford an MBP, but bad for those who want premium construction. Oh and the battery life sucks.

Specs are good, especially the 1080p panel.

The only thing wrong with the Adamo was that it was released before the hardware needed to make it look good AND perform well existed (or it wasn't cheap enough to make it marketable).

I can say the same thing about the Rev A and B 13" MBA. ;) They were both failures.

Dell should have continued the Adamo name and put today's tech into it.

Let's see:

Non-ULV i5 processor
dedicated GPU
FHD screen
Built-in DVD writer
Gets around 5 hours battery (according to Engadget)
Cheaper than the base 15" Pro, same price as the base 11" Air

This is intended to be the Windows alt to a 15" Pro.

Where are people getting the idea that this is intended to match the Airs?

Just read the review over at Engadget [http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/23/dell-xps-15z-review/]

- Not UNIBODY. That's one reason they were able to make it cheaper vs. the MBP. They noticed considerable flex when typing on it.

- Battery life is not as good as the MBP.

- The overall thickness is .97 vs. MBP @ .95.

- Has more stickers :D .

Based on the article, it's supposed to compete with the MBP not the MBA. They're saying it's the thinnest 15" Mobile Laptop. I guess they meant thinnest "Windows" Mobile Laptop...?

Its meant to compete with the MBP, and honestly i think they did a good job. Most people wont know the difference when it comes to uni-body. Plus it has windows which most people are used to, while offering similar stylings and performance to the MBP. Find it funny that they call it the thinnest 15" though lol.

The most important part of that statement is the "Most people won't know the difference...". You're right, they won't. Well, at least the average consumer won't. Until they start pressing the keys, and feel the thing flex.

What will be interesting is if it makes a bigger dent than the Adamo, or whatever it was called. I think it can, because it's cheaper. The Adamo was WAY too expensive for what it offered. Even if it was the fastest, and lightest, that's a pretty small market.

You know Engadgets battery life test consist of video being played back in a loop with wifi on and the optical drive enabled. Other sites(specifically PCMag) in their battery tests, which generally is just looping a couple of web pages wifi on(not sure if the optical drive was on or off) have somehow gotten the same or better battery life than the 15in MBP. I guess it all depends on usage, but it seems it is possible to equal or best the MBP's battery life.

Doesn't look that thin to be honest.. looks like more of a contender with MBP... Maybe I'll have my wife check this out.. she's in finance and hates working on Macs... and the price is pretty good too...

Seems like it, this is the quote from the Dell site: "Just 0.97 inches (24.68mm) at its thickest point, the XPS 15z is one of the thinnest 15" PC on the planet*"

I think PC = Windows?

Also there is a footnote but I couldn't find it.

LMAO. Engadget is hardly a site anyone actually trusts for accurate reviews. They have been junk for years.

Dell builds cheap crap which they don't support that runs Windows. People who buy a MBA are not going to buy one of these instead.
