I'm really looking at one of these. My Mom is looking for a cheap laptop and if I can upsell her on one of the bigger Dell's I'll piggy back on her order for the $99 deal (I'll give her $150 or something to offset the cost on her laptop order, plus extend her my government employee discount).

I give it about a week before the OSX86 guys have Tiger on this. :)

It's based on the same platform as the Acer Aspire One/MSI Wind etc, and Leopard's already working well on them.

...I can't seem to find that chipset available for the Atom.

The Dell uses the i945G chipset. I believe most of the other machines using Atom CPUs do, as well.

Intel has a new Atom-specific chipset coming out called Paulsbo which will offer smaller die sizes, better power management and significantly better video then the GMA950 (including HD playback).

asus selling a few MILLION of these things in just shy of two years, I really would say they started something

Yeah, but are they making any money from doing so?

I would not be surprised if they are selling them for close to production cost just because with every other Wintel manufacturer rushing their own identical model to market, price is the only real discriminator so everyone will be compelled to sell them for as little as possible.

Such is the tyranny of Windows for OEMs - because it can run on anything, it prevents anyone from create a truly niche product that they alone can exploit for real profit.
