Not a bad looking unit, but frankly it's a PSP with Android on it. Screen is way to small for really using it as a Slate. I think Dell still has some UMPC people on it's design team.

+1. It's not bad for a start. I personally think it's better than a N900 but it's either an oversized phone or a miniature tablet.

I like the HDMI output... something I wish the iPad had, as I'm a photographer, and the ability to do high-quality slide shows would be a big plus.

However, the real questions are price & battery power.

Also, it's interesting to note the marketing push behind this. Dell has some random guy doing an interview with another random guy at some electronics show, and this thing isn't even close to ready for release. It makes me doubt Dell really has their act together to properly support the "ecosystem" that'd be required to make this a success. In comparison, Apple is clearly focused on the iPad. Frankly, that makes me want to go with the iPad, which I know will work, instead of this other thing which I have no idea about the future of... and which I've already forgotten the name of... oh ya, mini 5.

Engadget did a review and said they could fit it in their jean pockets alright, I don't know if I would be able to do the same. It is definitely too big to be a phone, at least for me. If I am going to carry around a larger device I want it to be a significantly improved experience which I don't think a 5" screen would give.

A handheld device where you can access e-mail, Facebook, websites, and play movies, music, and videos!

What will they think of next?

How can anything from Dell be "promising"?

I mean like......what else could you possibly need on a mobile device. You named it all, and it does it all smoothly. Multitasking, flash and an android os is great for a tablet.

You forgot 5MP front and back cameras.. beautiful pocketable form factor.. and open mobile OS. Folks, it looks like iPad has got a serious competitor.

I don't consider it a competitor.

It is a fraction of the size. How is it a competitor?

It is like saying a 27" tube tv is a competitor with a 58" lcd flat screen.

How are they comparable?

If it does what you want great. Most people don't need a too small/too big device with dual cameras.

Seems to me like the trade off in size is the worst of all worlds. Too small to get any real benefit from being larger than say an iPhone, and too big to get any of the real benefits of being something you could easily manage to slip into your shirt pocket and carry with you everwhere.

The 5" dell and the iPad are simply not of the same category.

Here is the difference in size between the Dell 5 Mini and the iPad for the screens:

I'm surprised no one caught this little tidbit: "The Mini 5 ..... should be selling for $1,098 before carrier subsidy"

This device just went from interesting with potential to dead if they stick with that.

Mr. Dell never said that was going to be th price. That is rumored. I guarantee that the price will definitely not be they much or within 6 months the price will most definitely be competing with the ipad. Dells not that stupid to price things outrageously on something that won't get bought for that much or during a period with so much other competition. If they are trying to compete that is.

I like how everyone complains about no USB ports on iPad, but it is not an issue with the Mini 5. They even created a new proprietary connector! I mean, with Apple it is expected but for such an open device...

Yes it all depends on what you want.. The screen size is about half way between iPhone and iPad, which makes it a pocketable mini-tablet.. that can also double as a phone. The fact that it's much more mobile than an iPad will make you carry it in more places. And you don't need another phone to carry around (along with iPad).

And it is substantially larger than iPhone to offer real benefits - for example playing 720p movies or reading eBooks will be a significantly more enjoyable experience than iPhone. 2.5 times screen resolution is nothing to sneeze at.

Another huge advantage in my eyes in Android.. built-in turn-by-turn GPS.. Google Voice integration.. infinite customization.. multi-tasking.. FULL web experience (Flash support).. and most importantly freedom from Apple's App Store.

All in all, I think Dell Mini 5 is shaping up to be a perfect device for those who want something more than 320x480 screen.. integrated phone.. and something more mobile than 1.5lbs 10" iPad.

Maybe. But it isn't really an iPad competitor, it is an iPhone competitor.

For people who don't want the Phone part it, the Archos 5 is pretty much the same thing as the dell mini 5. Except the Archos is already available starting at $300. Same size, same screen size, same screen resolution, Android OS.

Imo the notion Ink Adam looks much more of an android ipad competitor than this

not entirely convinced by that though
