In related news. AMD chips won't save Dell, but AMD will get a bit more market share temporarily.

I dont see any reason Dell shouldnt offer the consumer choice, thats the free market. Apple hates giving the consumer choice. Like Mini vs Macpro kind of stuff. Consumer is King and Dell just sees that. Apple needs to get off its high horse and start selling to the consumer. Instead we get some marketing commitee who decides what the consumer can or cant have. I dont like commitees making my choices in technology. Consumer is King. I think Dell is giving the consumer choice. Allways a good thing.

Of course, 95% of Dell's customers won't know the difference between AMD and Intel anyway. If lack of configurations means that higher spec models can be sold at a lower price, I'd rather have that (assuming that Apple has done its best to make sure its using the best processors).

Of more likely DHM, Dell are following their standard business model and trying to get the cheapest components they can so they can continue to undercut their competition. Nothing to do with consumer choice. Everything to do with cost.

As I posted above though, it's not going to save them. With an absolutely terrible reputation for both support and reliability, and nothing else to fall back on like HP have with their printing business, all Dell have to offer is price. Their problem is that the gap in price between them and other manufacturers with better reputations, even at the low end, is now minimal and at some price points, non-existent.

Dell are now going the same way as Gateway, even if it takes them two or three years to get there. Dell stock will continue to tank.

You're right. He has no right to complain if he would like Apple to make some changes in their product line to better represent the consumer. This "argument" is similar to "if you don't like what America is doing, leave." You can like a company and it's products and STILL think they could do things better! Everything isn't black and white.

they have two consumer models. they're called the Mac mini and the iMac. they actually have a third, portable model: it's called the MacBook and is a notebook computer.

Dell doesn't offer the consumer choice. They have product line committees and they say "we need machines here, here, and here." So, they take a base configuration and add and subtract features until they reach their goals.

It's like Apple, HP, Gateway, Lenovo, Sony, and any other computer maker.

Apple makes fewer choices available because, on his return, Steve Jobs said that they would be cutting the number of motherboards for simplicity and cost cutting.

It's not about consumer choice. It's Dell's way of saying "Give us more discounts or **** you" to Intel. They're barely price-competitive with other Intel-based manufacturers and Dell doesn't feel it's getting a big enough discount bearing in mind its market position.

AMD + Dell for workstations / desktops will be a fairly short-lived liaison. Both know it, and both will make the most of it.

Exactly what I'm thinking. Just didn't read down the thread before I posted my response

BINGO!

Really, nothing angers me more than going to dell.com and trying to configure a machine; it is way too confusing.

Apple's options are perfect.

perfect my ass.

i want a computer that I can add 1-2 pci cards to, any PCI-Express graphic card to. And maybe a 2nd internal hard drive and no attach monitor. Oh and I dont want to pay over 2 grand for the opition. I think I get.....Oh wait apple doesnt offer that.

You either pay a huge preimuim to be able to upgrade or you are stuck with a very limited computer that is gimped with zero real upgradiblelity minus adding more ram.

Perfect? No.

I think that the Apple configurator is much easier to use but it doesn't have nearly as many options. Of course, with the Mac Pro, Apple has given more options, though they're claiming a lot because they're offering so many video cards.

The laptop computer configurations go far too quickly.

How is the current Intel Mac mini offering limited, other than graphics?

There are four USB ports and one Firewire port - you can daisy-chain up to 63 devices on one Firewire port. That's 63 upgrade parts you can potentially buy right there. Get powered hubs for USB and you can add more devices that way too.

You can change the memory to go up to 2 GB, possibly up to 4 GB if memory companies make 2 GB sticks.

You can add a 160 GB internal SATA drive, pick from hundreds of external Firewire/USB2 options, or even make your own. You could even extend the internal SATA and make it external.

You could buy a DualHead2Go from Matrox and get dual displays even with the limited graphics.

You can even change the internal processor to a Core 2 Duo. Nice to know that my slow, limited Mac mini could beat a Dual 2.5 GHz G5 if I upgraded it.

I can understand why people want to upgrade, but at some point it becomes costly, and buying a new computer is cheaper. If I spent all this money to fully deck out my Mini, it'd be cheaper to buy a Mac Pro or two. Apple has to do this to keep the business viable.

Your either a brownnoser or work for Apple. Their configurations suck in my view. Give the consumer a single core super fast cpu with a real video card slot and a additional slot or two for whatever. I dont need 4 cores and I dont need or even want to look at the integrated graphics crap they push.

I'm (sort of) with you on the slots, but not the CPU.

It has conclusively been demosntrated by both AMD and Intel that multi-core is the way to go instead of "single core super fast". Particularly since most of those "super fast" processors were ultimately used to emulate dual cores with Hyperthreading. :p

For Sure.

Besides which, the mac mini sells well because it's so damn beautiful! I tell you; for what it is, it packs a considerable punch. Things like "adding a slot or two" turn it into a tower...*eek*

Which is exactly what people do. Which is too bad, because they should be buying Macs. I just don't get why people are so dead set against a machine that's somewhere in the middle of the mini and the Pro, minus a monitor, with the price to match. There is obviously a market, people will buy it if given the option, provided Apple doesn't cripple it and/or make it too expensive.

It's not going to happen any time soon. They'll just kill the sales of all their other machines. I think the Mac Pro would be killed if they introduced a tower at the same price point as the iMac, because anyone with half a brain would just buy the cheaper tower and upgrade what they need instead of taking a hit for a Mac Pro.
