I dont think so, the mac pro has a lot of features that arent really needed by the imac crowd, but overkill for the tween people, other way around as well. The mid range doesnt need 4 pci express slots, maybe 2, not 4 HDD's but 2. If the consumer needs the performance they will go for the pro, if they just want to expend their investment and maybe "trail a mac pro" they will go for the mid range.

Interesting that Dell should go AMD now that intel has retaken the performance lead again...

Still be more profitable than the mini for those who want more. Pros will still buy the high end stuff like they always do. You may lose a few sales off the high end, but make more back from a larger number of sales overall and some people buying one instead of another computer. Apple should not be in competition with itself, it's in competition with Dell, Gateway, Lenova, etc.
