Very nice thinking! I wonder if the cabling was part of the severe latency problem I had with the 4K Asus. I found a StarTech mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort 1.2 cable on Amazon for $6.74. However, the spec sheet for the P2715Q says "cables included." Is the included cable not DP 1.2 compliant or was the problem that the included cable was DP-DP rather than mDP-DP?
Now to find a coupon price on the Dell P2715Q. Thanks very much!
I'd posted earlier in this thread that my discoveries regarding these displays was quite by accident, as I have two of them on my desk along with some other hardware; right after 10.10.3 came out, my GF asked me to clean up my fu..., er, messy desk. She has two MA black belts, so I complied. I had one stock Dell cable connected to my rMBP and a TB cable connected to a TB array, and a stock Dell cable connected to my Mini Server - I disconnected everything, cleaned up, then started reconnecting stuff.
During my rebuilding my workspace, I connected the TB and one stock Dell cables to my rMBP and my Mini to my TB array, then fired up both Macs and both displays - what I saw was two displays showing an extended Desktop of my rMBP, and an array working and my Mini Server working. ????? is what I thought at the time, but that's when I discovered that the Yosemite update enabled multiple display support and multiple 4k 60Hz support on my rMBP. Zoinks!
My cable support point was that I noticed significant lag with the second Dell display, despite showing up as 60Hz. It was the limited DP bandwidth in the DP 1.1-compatible TB cable, so I swapped out that cable for the second stock Dell cable and there was a huge reduction in lag and response time. Then I swapped out one of the Dell cables for a DP 1.2 1600p cable and could tell the difference between the two displays again and, finally swapped out the 1600p cable for a 2160p cable and saw an even nicer image on that display and even better visual response. The only tangible difference is the HBR2/2160p cable has more bandwidth capability AFAIK.
Bigger pipes are always good IMHO!
It's a cheap upgrade - I spent $15 on two mDP>DP cables and another $6 on a mDP>mDP cable - I now have one of the displays connected to both my rMBP and Mini and use the OSM to switch between the two Macs. And, keep in mind that the COBOC cable mentioned above is a DP>DP cable, which isn't the cable I need for my Minis or rMBPs. AFAIK, COBOC makes only white cables in the configuration I need, and I wanted black cables - my preference.
