Dell ships 27-inch display using iMac's panel

I am not being sarcastic but can you help me understand how this 27" panel from Dell is the same that is in the iMac? I'm real curious because I am not versed on what panel they're using today in the iMacs.

Oh **** you're totally correct. I missed the link inside the second link showing the iMac panel write-up.

Very interesting and yet, I've got nothing to add to the OP's question. ;)

It's not like they start going bad right when you open it. I am going on four years with my Apple Cinema Display 24" (back when they were matte and actually nice :p), and it still looks great with constant use. I actually have to turn the brightness down still.

My buddy got one of these dell panels for 750 bucks direct from Dell. These things, assuming they don't have a bad anti glare coating, will stomp all over the iMac shiny-as-all-get-out implementation.
 
Yeah, I assume those people who hate the iMacs' glossy display will have another viable alternative.

It's just a waste that the design especially at the rear look like crap. In addition to that, LED isn't really that much more costly if its added...

How often do you look at the rear of a monitor? Never?
 
Wow, $1100? The extra $900 I paid for an i7 computer with 4 gb RAM, a decent graphics card, a DVD burner, exquisite design, whisper-quiet operation, a 1 TB HD, wifi, gigabit ethernet, the Mac OS, AND LED backlighting instead of the CFL seems like a truly remarkable deal.

You can get it much cheaper. My friend just bought one for about 750 or so direct from Dell.

Combine that with what it costs to build the internals of a 2000 iMac, and no, those machines are nowhere close to a "good deal." Especially since when (not if) the hard drive dies, you have to take it to the teenagers at the mall to get it fixed, instead of spending 5 minutes doing it yourself.

The iMac is a 600 dollar machine, with a 750 dollar monitor. Please don't say the 2000 you spent on it is a great deal. Oh yeah, to the guy above, you spent 2000 on an i7? Where? The i7 is 2200 (a 200 dollar upcharge, on a retail difference of 90 dollars for not much more performance).

LOL...it's certainly true...

I just thought maybe they might like to care a wee bit more on the overall product and not just on tech specs like a certain famous british designer. Especially when a large amount of potential buyers might be creatives...:D

Got a discount. Don't forget the excellent case design, exceptional energy efficiency, and of course, the OPERATING SYSTEM.

And no, the iMac is NOT a 600 dollar machine.
CPU - $289
GPU - $100
Mobo - ~$160
RAM - $250
DVD burner - ~$50
HD - ~$100

Grand total? $949. WITHOUT an OS or TAX or CASE. ...And yes, I listed the RAM for the iMac, not for the mobo I posted - I realize that motherboard's RAM would be cheaper, but we need to compare apples to apples here. I just picked a motherboard that would be a fairly appropriate match.

The iMacs ARE quite well priced, all things considered. The "Apple Tax" is really quite miniscule on this particular product.
 
Those RAM modules are not the same Apple supplies

That is a 4GB chip.

Apple gives you 2 2GB chips. Total about 100 probably less.

i spent 2 hours comparing specs and prices yesterday. except for the graphics card and that's a maybe, the $2000 iMac is the same price as a similar Dell once you add everything in. if you want an IPS monitor from Dell, you have to go for the Studio XPS 9000 system. It's $1500 including tax. Add $300 if you want a 3 year warranty. and then you have to factor in the price of the monitor on iMacs.

The dell monitor will be under $500 in a few months, Unlike Apple products the price will start high and drop over time. Apple prices start high and stay high.
