what it comes down to is... the imac is probably one of the better priced machines in apple's lineup.

It still has some of the apple tax added of course... but compared to say a macbook pro vs a pc laptop, the imac doesnt cost AS much more.

The dell monitor will be under $500 in a few months,

Cool! Then I'll buy one and use it in dual display with my i7. I'm going to need a bigger desk...

One thing though, that Dell looks like a nice panel but like most of their products it is a fugly looking design.

Besides power consumption, what's the difference with this in reality? Does it make the panel inferior?

Quote: "For one, Apple uses LED backlighting whereas the U2711 sticks with CCFL technology. But isn't CCFL worse? That depends on what you're after; the iMac 27 offers a 72% color gamut while the U2711 has a 102% color gamut (based on the CIE 1931 standard)."

Has anyone used the U2711 with a Mac? I am planning to buy this and hook it up to my early 2008 Macbook Pro with Nvidia 8600GT 256MB. This will eventually be connected to a 27-inch iMac once Apple refreshes the line.

How did your friend get it for 750? Care to let us in on the secret?

There's a $799 version of that monitor - the 2709W - but its only 1920x1200 instead of 2550x1440. Definitely NOT the same panel as the iMac (on the cheaper one). Maybe that's how his friend got such a deal...

I kind of wish that Mac displays were matte. :( Much better for photo editing which is about all I do.

The dell monitor will be under $500 in a few months, Unlike Apple products the price will start high and drop over time. Apple prices start high and stay high.

I doubt it. It's a pretty high-end monitor...but it I suppose it'll go down some in the coming months/year

The U2410 hasn't dropped a dime. At best it was $499 over Christmas.

Dell's high end displays stay expensive and if they drop $100, expect a new model around the corner.

I'd really like to know what coupons and pormo codes they used to get the U2711 down to $750. Maybe I can do the same for the U2410.

If this is available for $750, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Already went the yellow tinge iMac route and don't care to go that way again. Happy with speed of my MacPro, but looking to upgrade my aging ACD. It's still great, but I did like the iMac for the week I had it.

Anyone have luck getting the price down?

You might wanna check first to be sure that the 27" Dell doesn't have a yellow tinge, it doesn't have to be unique to Apple, they're using the same panels.

It's a matte standalone display with multiple inputs and a wider color gamut. I haven't seen any coupon codes for it yet.

I didn't forget the warranty either.

You got me puzzled with the gamut. Similar panel should give similar one, right?
I remember seeing some info on gamut of the new iMacs some time in October, I think, but can't find it now. Somehow it was in the context of advantages of the LED technology...

Wide gamut displays are only good for Photoshop. For every thing else, they make the colors very oversaturated.

Yes, be carefull people. I had a Dell 2408 WFP with the same type of wide gamut display. No problems whatsoever with Photoshop, Lightroom, Firefox , ie software that supports wide gamut.

Everything else was oversaturated, especially the reds ... desktop, games, etc.

I returned the monitor after two weeks. Worst purchase ever .

IMac27 still is a pretty good value for the money, especially since it can still act as a good monitor couple years from now when somebody upgrades for a new computer.

You'd have to go with RGB LED over the WLED on the iMac. The Dell uses classic CCFLs as a compromise. RGB LEDs would have demanded an even higher price over CCFLs.
