Users mock Apple for making forward-thinking choices. Hate and FUD begins. New people join MR to announce they've been using Apple products for 25 years ( ) and this one decision has now made them jump to Windows/Android.

Industry eventually follows. Apple's choices become ubiquitous. Previous tech seems antiquated in comparison and time proves that Apple made the right choice. Rinse and repeat.

I see they've also stolen the idea of 'Courage' by releasing a laptop with 4GB RAM as a standard. I suppose they couldn't have made it "The world's smallest 13" laptop*" with the inclusion of USB-A ports, which in 2018 feel like plugging in a serial port.

Sure is. Imagine how good the 13" MBP will be once higher-end CPUs with Iris Pro parts are available.

Too bad Dell is another "Me-too" manufacturer and has picked up Apple's worst habits such as unupgradeable ram, no user replaceable battery, and now no USB-A ports.

I posted it in the MacBook Pro forum, since I though it was rather relevant to the frequent criticism. It got moved by the mods. Which rather surprises me, since other posts that discuss how much Dell XPS is better than the MBP are still in...

As much as it saddens me to see more manufacturers ditching USB-A completely, it clearly shows we're a vocal, but very tiny and negligible part of the market. Everybody else just shrugs and pulls out a credit card. They're selling like hot cakes, USB-A or not.

Same thing happned when Apple dropped the floppy drive on the Bondi Blue iMac, people complained. At some point a manufactorer has to make the decision to drop legacy hardware and move on, otherwise the new standard will never reach critical mass.

I was one who didn't like the idea of not seeing any USB-A connectors, but after the dust settled I see the reasoning and I agree. I think Apple was right to drop the old port and move forward. People complain when Apple doesn't innovate, yet when they redesign their laptops and use a new port, people complain.

Dell is moving faster then I expect, as they seem to hold onto legacy technology longer, but I think it just shows you that the USB-C is a better connector imo

That's quite true @maflynn I just think leaving 1 legacy port wouldn't have hurt.

I'm rather partial since most of my software requires USB-A security dongles at runtime. Heck, I even need serial ports all the time. So now it's like an endless line of dongles haunting me. This doesn't apple to most people of course.

I also doubt that many of the more utilitarian devices like TVs, POS terminals et.al. will receive USB-C anytime soon, so it'll take years to catch up to the ubiquity of USB-A.

I understand, and while I still have plenty of USB-A cables, I think mentally I've moved on to USB-C. At least in accepting its the future and I'll bite the bullet and convert over when the times comes. At it stands, I'll be buying a new laptop this year so I have time to handle my cable business

They give you a dongle to convert, as well. I may not be like others, but I already use a USB hub, so I can simply add that dongle to the chain.

Dell does include a USB-C to USB-A adapter in the box though, something Apple seems to be unable to afford

Its the little things that show a company is focused on a great experience and Apple used to be that way. I do think they're a bit petty/greedy in now providing any sort of dongles.

Exactly. I don't think every airport terminal in my city, every car released in the last few years, every big city mall had "floppy disk drives" like they have USB-A lol...

So, anyone going to get this? I have a 2016 rMB and it is serving me well, but looking for something new and I believe a Dell and Windows 10 would be a breath of fresh air for me. If not I could always go back.

My boss has a 13” with some crazy high resolution. So far he likes it.
