I find it especially nice that every newer piece of tech uses USB-C connectors (like my mouse and keyboard) and comes with an USB-A to C cable in the box. Lol.

Well, if all laptops come with usb-c as only port, that is great. Then everything else has to be usb-c as well :)
But we are 'moving' to that direction since 2015. And still we aren't there. Not even close.

I meant laptops are moving towards USB-C only... like these Dells.

I wasn't talking about all devices moving towards USB-C.

Yes. But when VGA was abandoned, HDMI and DP replaced it. And 99% of monitors came with those ports.
In todays market, only a tiny minority of monitors come with usb-c ports. But usb-c port isn't replacing just video input/output. It's replacing everything. But I still don't see a usb-c mouse for example. And a lot of other basic stuff as well :)

You don't need a USB-C monitor... you just need a cable with USB-C on the laptop-end and whatever on the monitor-end.

If you buy one of these new Dell XPS laptops... I'm pretty sure you can figure out how to hook up your monitor. :p

Personally... I'm excited for these new Dell laptops. Finally they've got 16:10 displays! So I'll buy some new cables and/or dongles and get on with it.

I will be shocked if the 2021 XPS models go back to separate ports for HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-A, DC power, etc.

I think the 17“ is my favorite right now. Looks fantastic. And vapor chamber cooling sounds great.
more at the reddit post.
The more I see of these the more I like them - it's striking the 17" version is only fractionally larger & heavier than the 16" MacBook Pro! Possibly for the first time I actually like the aesthetic of the XPS more than the MacBook. The 16:10 displays, top firing speakers and larger trackpads will be really great quality of life additions over the current design :) Looks like the 17" gets up to RTX 2060 (presumably MQ) graphics which will blow the MBP out of the water, can only find up to GTX 1650 on the 15" so that will give the edge to the MacBook, though it's likely to be closer in size to the 14" MacBook Pro which probably(?) won't have dedicated graphics. This is the sort of excited feeling I used to get form Apple, I sort of did for the 16" as well, but the excessive entry price, lacklustre display and uncertainty around where the Mac is going are big dampeners on that one for me.

I would consider myself in the market for the 17", depending on price and availability of an OLED display but I bet it will be more than I'd want to spend on a secondary device. That said, a 2060 would be just enough for me to give up the desktop... that i just built lol.

I don't think there is an 17" and 16:10 OLED out there, right? Pretty sure there won't be any OLEDs for the updated XPS available at launch.

Think they did mention in one of the articles @grmlin posted on the last page that OLED isn't going to be available, at launch at least. Do you want it specifically for use with HDR content? Hopefully Dell might also pick up mini LED at some point, or reintroduce an OLED option later in the release cycle.

The MSI Creator 17 has the mini LED display option, but it's pricey. I talked about it here: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...d-and-10th-gen-intel-cpus-nvidia-rtx.2232135/

I can't get it with an US keyboard here though, so it's not an option for me anymore.

Agree With Dave Lee about AMD, but these are still probably the new benchmark for laptops... was leaning towards maybe the 15" but the better cooling in the 17 would be useful for replacing my old gaming laptop as well. Best part has got to be upgradable SSD/ RAM so no need to go for the super pricy options just to get 1TB storage, and if you need more RAM later you're covered :D

Here's some more info:

One of these will be mine! I just measured my backpack and the 17" will fit! Thank you small bezels!

Soon I will be a resident of dongle-town... :p

Those look amazing and really shows how badly the MacBook Pros need a complete redesign. Apple must be saving the bezel less screens for its ARM versions at this point.

I guess I'll bite on these, well, my office will to be fair ;)

Too bad they didn't go with vapor chamber cooling in the 15" :/

They both look absolutely fantastic.

Looks like the 17 is the way to go for professional work due to that vapor chamber cooling. Dave2D is pretty blunt when he doesn't like something, but also very honest when he truly does and his first impressions of it were positive.

We'll have to wait for reviews... but it certainly can't be as bad as the poor cooling in the 2020 Macbook Air! :p

I still see two fans and two sets of heatpipes in the XPS 15. And... two RAM sockets and two MVNe SSD sockets!

Hell... I'll take a little extra heat for all that expandability/upgradability!

But I don't recall any bad XPS cooling horror stories in previous models. So it should be OK. Fingers crossed!

Not to put you on the spot, but almost every review and owner of previous XPS 15 (me included) are very much aware of the thermal limitations of these devices. While yeah, the performance is still good, you are paying for that thin and light form factor and fantastic battery life with terrible thermals when running intensive tasks over long periods of time. It still keeps up, and is capable, but throttles significantly after about half an hour to an hour of use.

How do the Dell XPS laptops compare to MacBooks in terms of longevity, product support, and part quality?

I guess I never paid much attention to XPS thermals. :p

The wounds of the newest Macbook Air shooting up to 100°C in a millisecond are still fresh. And I remember Dave's MBP freezer tests too!

Yeah I would expect the performance is still decent in the thin-n-light XPS. Just the amount of engineering they've put into it with all the heat pipes for the CPU and GPU are pretty impressive. It looks like Dell has at least put some thought into it.

I hope MaxTech and Dave2D will put these new XPS models through the thermal ringer! We'll learn soon enough! :)

We're now firmly in Macbook Pro price territory with these.

The 15 inch in Germany starts with 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, the smaller battery and no dedicated GPU for 1500 Euro.

If you want the GTX 1650, 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD, you're paying 2400 Euro, which is more than the Macbook Pro 16 with Edu pricing. And the Macbook has a larger screen, better speakers, 2 more cores (i7 vs i5) and a free operating system that doesn't blast you with ads. Kind of a bummer.
