The only reason I asked if it was a free download was because I didnt read the guys post, i just skimmed it and saw the name of the free application. It was only after I had posted asking if it was free that I realised what he had said...a common error!!!

Do not, repeat, do not start with adobe software. It is counter intuitive and confusing. Try something free like Inkscape first.

Funny - I find it be just the opposite. I usually start in Photoshop because I find it easy to duplicate what's in my head. Maybe it's just how well you know program or something..

Nothing beats good ol' pen and paper, though I must admit...

Paper, pencils and pens. Maybe some colored pencils.

Computers are limiting when you're trying to be creative.

Then go for the software that'll translate your studies the best. I like Illustrator and Freehand.

I can't agree more with these two statements! I believe design would be a lot better if people worked it out on paper first. My professor is always saying how terrible the computer is at design. Pencil/pen and paper are great for design. Computer is great for production. The whole thing is a process that should be followed, and that process should begin with graphite or ink on paper.

I absolutely LOVE this quote:

The best design tool is a long eraser with a pencil at one end. —Marty Neumeirer, Neutron LLC

My suggestion is to grab your trusty #2 and open that printer up and steal a few sheets and draw this out. Once you get ALL your thoughts puked out on the paper, pick your favorite(s) and scan them in and THEN work on the computer.
