And almost out of the workstation business.
And nearly out of the Mac business.
And almost out of the workstation business.
You can't honestly believe Apple will produce another standalone display, right?!?!?

The story already linked to you plus the story from June (above) shows Apple telling folks to get lost and find a third party display someplace else. In November, Apple announced the 4k and 5k LG displays they collaborated on to help pitch the new MacBook Pro. You don't honestly think a company would sales pitch and sell it's (potential) chief competitor if they had plans to launch their own display, right? Wake up.
Stop dreaming about a new Apple monitor. It's not going to happen. Apple has ditched that business and handed it over to LG.LG UltraFine 4K Display and LG UltraFine 5K Display are UGLY. Apple could release a brand new Mac Pro (even with new design) with a brand new Apple Thunderbolt Display.
Also, I wouldn't hold my breath for a Mac Pro refresh anytime soon, or ever... Apple gives two ***** about the Mac Pro. Even if they did, Skylake Xeons suitable for the Mac Pro wouldn't be released until Q3 of 2017... in other words, it'll be far too late.
Skylake Xeons suitable for the Mac Pro ... were released long ago even in 2015 (Skylake Server processors):

Indeed, they could.Apple could release a brand new Mac Pro (even with new design) with a brand new Apple Thunderbolt Display.
Actually, I love the Trash Can!The Darth Vader trash can was and is a huge mistake.
Hilarious, wit, sharp and… probably accurate.
People tend to overlook and forget the mistake of their love ones, including themselves.Thank you for pointing this out.
Intel releases a lot of chips throughout the year. Every year.
I wish more people would remember this instead of saying:
"It's not Apple's fault... Apple is always stuck waiting on Intel for chips!"

Kaby Lake Xeons suitable for the Mac Pro (Server/Workstation Processors) are expected for Q1 2017:
