For those out there with both a desktop, laptop, iphone, and an ipad. Does this work? Does the ipad fill a space that the iphone, laptop or desktop doesn't? Would the ipad be useful if I already had all these other things?

i would say the key is how big or heavy your laptop is, if very then yeah this thing can be

I currently have a laptop, iPhone, and iPad but my laptop has transformed into a desktop.

I didn't bring my laptop to class daily (only about 3-4 times a week) but i did bring it around the apartment. If I was ever doing serious work I would connect my laptop to a 21 inch monitor. Now, the laptop will probably stay in the desktop "position" 95% of the time.

My guess is if you got/have an iPad your laptop will be used less unless it is better at somethings than your desktop. Most mobile computing is handled beautifully with the iPad making a laptop less attractive ti carry around.

If you're so unsure how useful the device would be to you that you're asking strangers on the internet, it's probably not going to be that useful to you. :)

I've got all those things and more. (u left out notebook). that's why I can't see myself indulging in an iPad for the time being. when they add some more features, I'll likely buy in. make sense?? (after all, I do have 10 ipods between my wife and I--6 for me and 4 for her, or is it 7 for me and 3 for her??) EDIT: yup, it's 6/4

Looks like the iPad is going to fill its roles as
1) just before bedtime computer.
2) websurfing while watching TV computer.

Both of these used to be occupied by the laptop, but I think the laptop is going to be for travel only now.

I have all 4 and noticed the iPad does fill a gap. I use it right before I goto bed and catch up on news etc. I also use it during breakfast to read the news. Oh and btw i also have my company bb so i guess this is my 5th device.

i have an 27" iMac, 13" Macbook, iPhone 3GS, and an iPad.

27" iMac = work

13" Macbook = web browsing/work

iPhone 3GS = phone/music/email/txt/games/etc.

iPad = e-book reader/games/apps/casual web surfing/email/etc.

Yes, it does fill a space. A laptop is too bulky and an iPhone now by comparison seems lacking (only because of the beautiful screen and apps designed expecially for the iPad). With that said I wouldn't give up any of them. I agree with the poster that said it might replace the laptop.

My iPad has taken the void where my MacBook was. I'll now just use my MacBook for the heavier stuff - iWeb, development, etc.

For normal browsing and stuff the iPad is great.

My netbook and Kindle are being 100 percent replaced by the iPad. I actually see certain scenarios where I would normally reach for my iPhone but am now reaching for my iPad.

My laptop is my work machine. Nothing can replace that during the day. At night though, it will no longer get any use.

One desktop, 3 laptops, 2 iphones, an iPod touch, an older iPod, one iPad, and soon to be another iPad. The iPad will get used almost all the time except when I'm doing schoolwork on my laptop. The iPhone's screen seems tiny now that I've used an ipad.

I'm using my iMac as my "creative" computer.... writing, business, banking, photography, CD- and DVD-ripping, plus digital storage of all my media and documents.

My iPad is my "consumption" computer....major web browsing, books, magazines, games, video/TV shows (if I want a smaller screen than an actual TV set), and music. I think the iPad has the BEST version of the "iPod" ever.

I don't have an iPad yet (curse of UK) but will have at that point an iMac, 2 PCs, a Macbook Pro, a Mac Mini, an iPhone, an iPad and a Sony e-reader.

Depends on how much of a geek you are. There's no real accountable justification for having all that, but as a geek who wants lots of flexibility (and any excuse to have the latest tech) it is absolutely required!

My MBP will probably spend more time in its case, as the iPad will be brilliant for casual browsing on the bed (not that, behave) or quickly looking up something on a walkthrough while playing on the PS3 etc. Those are things I used the MBP for quite a lot. But it's not got the full OS or keyboard so I still "need" both. It doesn't sound as comfortable for books as a dedicated reader (heavy, no e-ink) so that's still 'required'. And even if it had a phone in it, I wouldn't want to pocket it or hold it to my ear :D

The iPad is a laptop replacement, your MacBook Pro is a desktop replacement. :D

Right now I have a MacBook Pro and a 24" Apple Cinema Display, and two iPods (Touch and Nano). It has worked great for me since I can still take the laptop with me when I need it, or use it elsewhere in the apartment and still have a big screen when I need to do work (and cartography is painful without a lot of desktop space). I had planned on buying the iPad when it came out in Canada just because it looked really bloody cool. Now after reading reviews and peoples impressions of it I plan on holding off. That and the fact that summer is almost here and that I tend to ignore my computer during this time of year means there is no rush since it won't get much use right away.

But in September when my girlfriend goes back to school she is going to need a laptop to replace hers, which is almost dead. I had planned on getting a Mac Mini and hooking that up to the ACD so she could have access to to the MBP whenever she needed it and I would still have a computer to use. But...I am considering whether an iPad would work in this case too. She could still use the MBP to do work at home and I could use the iPad while the computer was in use. Or maybe the iPad would work for her school work...taking notes and such. My guess is that it won't quite meet our needs and I'll go for a Mac Mini but I am curious to hear more about peoples experience with it.

I think whether this will replace existing machines, complement them, or not really serve a purpose will depend on the person. I suspect when I get an iPad it won't be because I need it, but rather because it will be something fun, and perhaps by then there will be some really interesting productivity thats suit my needs. For some people, such as my parents, I can see this being something they would like. I still thinks its really cool and have been excited to see it launch over the past few months. But for now I would say that unless you can see a need for a smashingly cool netbook in your life, then the only reason to get it right now is just because its really cool.

Edit: I would also add that some aspects, such as eBooks, may be reason enough for a lot of people to get it, and I am sure there are other legitimate reasons too...it just depends on the person. For me its not eBooks or browsing or streaming videos or magazines or things that like that have me interested in the iPad. It is things that may be possible with more apps and OS upgrades that will be the deal breaker for me.

hmm, a lot of good points in here. Thanks for replying! I guess the answer to my question would be to think of the ipad as more of a consumption device, in which case it doesn't compete too much with my laptop/desktop. It's mostly competing with my iphone. Which is more mobile. So maybe an at home device for when I'm not at my desk...
It's very tempting to get. I think I'm gonna hold off until the next version though. Wait for that front facing camera =)

I have a desktop, MacBook, ultra portable Dell laptop (work) and an iPhone 3G

Having the iPad, I have almost stopped using my macbook and iPhone completely. The only thing I have turned anything other than the iPad since I fired it up has been my MacBook to rip DVDs... for my iPad.

My MacBook just seems heavy, bulky and cumbersome now.

All of the above. I'm a conspicuous consumer of everything Apple.

As for the void the iPad fills, it is much lighter to carry around for "casual computing" than my 17" MacBook Pro and much more capable than my iPhone 3GS for running apps. It's a great companion when waiting in the doctor's office or DMV or slow serving restaurant.
