ok theres two ways il take this what i have now and what i would have if i upgraded

what i have now the 3 would be my mac pro 1,1 upgraded to el capitan, my 2009 MacBook pro, and my iPhone 6 plus i love my iPad for some things but id rather have a powerful tower in the room for intensive work a laptop on the go and phone to b a phone

now what i hope to upgrade to my 3 items would be a 2010 6 core mac pro, a unannounced 2016 15inch MacBook pro and a iPhone 7 plus

this combo would be all that i need mac pro have a windows drive and a beefy gpu for pc gaming and such lol.

now - iMac 21, ipad mini, iphone

if i can sell all and start again - mbp , phablet 7

I could give up my laptop or tablet but not my phone or desktop. Those are my most productive devices. I would probably give up my tablet although it is ideal on a plane for movies and games.

I pick a 27" iMac, a powerful and silent gaming PC not running Win10 and a small laptop/netbook. Obvious reasons...

Sadly have no space for a desktop and need the portability of a laptop/notebook for university so my current 3 choices are my MacBook Pro for doing more intensive tasks. Tablet for when I'm doing certain tasks where a bigger screen than my iPhone is nicer but the MacBook Pro isn't needed. Phone for getting in contact with people and staying up to date with emails, etc.

Laptop (rMBP), desktop (Mac Pro 4,1->5,1 usually running linux), tablet (iPad mini). No phone.

If I'm at home there's the home phone. If I'm on the move I don't want to talk to you anyway. :) So I don't use a mobile. I understand that my situation is not for everyone, of course.

I'm with the few who've said "desktop, tablet, phone."

Desktop for heavy-duty work (video, audio, programming) and viewing on a beautiful large display, tablets for art and reading, and phone for audiobooks and podcasts on walks, and to support the Watch (no phone service).

I love the new MacBooks, but tablets beat them when there's already a desktop.

I have Laptop Tablet Phone. My MacBook is powerful enough for everything I need and If I ever feel the need for extra screen I will get an external display for MacBook!

I have a 2015 27" 5K iMac, iPad 3, 15" 2012 MacBook Pro and just upgraded to an iPhone 7 Plus from an iPhone 6. I only really use the iMac and the phone. The phone does most everything I need when I'm out and about with the MacBook making some rare excursions with me. At home it's the iMac I use for my computing needs. I probably use the phone more than anything e.g. sat in front of the tv, in the kitchen, in bed, which is why I went for the bigger screen this time so to answer your question desktop, phone and laptop just because it is handy to have the portable computer sometimes. Can't see myself getting another iPad again.

Thanks for all the replies!

I actually ended up selling my rMBP today. I'm going iMac 27", iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6 for now. Giving it a try!

After my studies, my needs have changed. I started my career and received a company issued laptop. Also, sitting in front of the computer all day in the office, I much prefer picking up my tablet to check the web and a bit of social media in the evenings. My iMac handles all the serious work and is great for doing so.

I still think this is an interesting conversation, as everyone has different needs and use-cases. Feel free to continue sharing your examples below if you wish!

Update!

After nearly three years, I can say that the iMac 27", iPad and iPhone combo worked well.

The iMac was fantastic for productivity, with its large display. A great computer for those GoPro edits and larger photo libraries. For writing and research, I really enjoyed the ability to have three word documents side by side, or Safari and Word. Having plenty of internal storage for everything was also valuable, of course, even though this was the last HDD-based computer I'll ever buy.

Now, there were times when I missed having my previous 13" MacBook Pro. With the iMac, you're obviously tied to a desk at all times, which, for me, helped productivity. For non-productive work, I was expecting the iPad to be enough. It wasn't really.

The iPad is my absolute favorite consumption device, but the moment I want to write something longer than even a few sentences, I did miss having a proper keyboard. Moreover, there are still websites and apps that are poorly optimized for iPad and/or lack the functionality you have come to expect from the desktop version of the site. In those cases, I didn't head over to my office and fire up the iMac - no, I simply decided to avoid the task I was doing. I have given up the idea of replacing a laptop with the iPad for now. I will give it another go in a few years, assuming macOS and iOS continue to merge.

The iPhone of course, I can't do without.

Moving forward, I will hopefully be moving into a new apartment shortly, closer to the city. Space will be more limited so a big desk setup with a 27" display won't be given priority. Instead, I look forward to adopting a more minimalistic approach by going laptop, tablet and phone.

Decided to go 2018 MacBook Air, iPad and iPhone.

The new MacBook Air has been a fantastic laptop experience so far and feels way more modern than my previous iMac and MacBook Pro, thanks to Touch ID, the new blazing fast SSDs and being completely silent and cool to the touch. Battery life is insane.

I got a great offer on my iMac, so decided now was the time to sell. When they adopt a new design with thinner bezels and SSDs standard across the board, I might get another, but for now it started feeling a bit long in the tooth.

iMac, iPad Pro, iPhone

Currently I have a 2012 MBP but will switch to a 27” iMac early next year.

I do most reading, note taking and brainstorming on the iPad.

The heavy lifting gets done on the MBP. Xcode, document layout, Keynote, dealing with lots of files and folders. The iPad is great when focused on a single task but struggles when you need a half dozen or more apps to massage text, charts, arrays, images and PDFs when doing document layout. Maybe things will improve when iOS 13 arrives.

I use the iPhone least of all, mostly for phone calls, Apple maps and texting. I switched to the WiFi only 12.9” iPad Pro so use the iPhone as a hot spot when I’m not home.

If I have to choose 3, then I choose laptop, tablet, phone. My setup has been mostly MacBook (Pro or Air), iPad and iPhone, anyway. I move often (to different countries, sometimes different continents, every couple of years), so at my new place, I buy a monitor and use the MacBook as a desktop if I need to. When it's time to move to a new country, I just leave my monitor behind.

I use my iPhone the least, only for Whatsapp, receiving calls and SMS and as my alarm clock. I check my phone only once or twice a day (in case there are new Whatsapp messages).

My laptop is used most often for coding, reading lecture notes, iMessage, watching shows and movies, managing files and anything that requires multi-tasking. I actually prefer to read on my laptop when possible, since I tend to open multiple browser tabs and windows to compare and refer to articles, as well as coding.

I do mostly note taking, problem practice, bedtime and travel reading on my iPad.

IMO
No need for Desktop AND laptop. I travel fairly often, so I have a laptop, which can easily be docked with an external monitor/keyboard/mouse.

I bring my laptop on big trips where I need the real power, other than that, ipad and cell phone are sufficient.
So my choice would be : Laptop, tablet, phone.
