AOL has put us back online with the £16 a month deal atm.
I've just done a speed test and got what I thought I would get here, actual speed of just over 1Mbs.

I have a question though, I went on the BE website and it says I can't get their internet.

https://www.bethere.co.uk/web/beportal/coverage

at the top, entered my phone and then tried postcode too.

Why can't I get BE and is there a schedule or something so that I know when my speeds would be increased? According to speedtest.net the UK's internet is about 40th fastest in the world.... THATS CRAP! It needs upgrading for the future!...

Think yourself lucky that you don't live in the US. There are some areas that don't get broadband at all. If you only get 1Mb then I assume you're out in the sticks somewhere so you're always going to be pretty slow for a long time.

Be have been the best ISP I've ever had. A good reliable connection that was always speedy. The reason why you can't get them is because they have only upgraded certain telephone exchanges with the necessary equipment to provide (up to) 24Mbps internet. Usually these are within the cities.

AOL, along with BT, I would never touch with a bargepole (that's such a stupid saying lol).

Anyway, try this site to find out alot about your area, local box, line and isp availability and development...

^ Not all torrents are illegal. Infact you'd be surprised what counts as a legal torrent (TV records for example). I used to host some of my games on torrent before I got my own web hosting.

Don't go for BT. They're notorious for traffic shaping, this reason alone is why we were going to switch (but decided to stay on for the substantially lower fee if we stuck around). But now I regret it.

We're paying for 8mbps. When we signed up got 2mbps, after 6 months that slowly dropped and now we're at 800kbps. But due to traffic shaping between 4-7pm our connection speed drops to 500kbps or even just stops loading pages altogether. We've been in touch many times with BT and showed them speed reports from various times in the day but they deny everything. When we say the speed has dropped since we first switched to them they tell us it's in our heads and we can only get 800kbps. They have offered no help in trying to resolve these issues and come the next time our contract is up - we're off like you wouldn't believe.

Absolute crap. Avoid like the plague and such.

Be Broadband and Virgin Media get my vote. (Virgin traffic shape too but its not as important when it's still very fast AFTER the shaping)

Erm, no that is not legal at all, the UK has the oldest most outdated copyright laws and anything that is copyrighted is not allowed to be shared.

On traffic shaping, you must be in the suck as my traffic is shaped to 300 KB/s after 6 PM which is quite a decent speed :D

Avoid Virgin or BT as not only will they rip you off, but they'll sign you up for advertising programs like Phorm without informing you beforehand, and pass your personal details on to marketing companies.

bethere.co.uk are the best home use ISP around - owned now by O2 but still great connection speed, reliability and ethics.

plusnet are the best in terms of cheapest around with good ethics.

He said that although downloads are flagged from a file sharing standpoint the flagging occurs when there is heavy upload rates. So by limiting these during peak hours your less of a target to them and will be left alone.

BT and Talk Talk have both backed off from using Phorm for the time being, but the way BT in particular did secret trials of that horrible system on some of its customers without permission was really bad, and quite probably illegal.

I would personally avoid BT as an ISP for that reason alone, the sheer arrogance and sneakiness of it was awful IMHO.

Take it from a person who was with Virgin Media for five years, their technical support and broadband packages are as bad as BT's offerings.

I went with BE after I moved house, and I am NEVER looking back.

Well, the best ISP to go with now in the UK is Sky.

They really offer truely unlimited connections. No traffic shaping, no limits or throttling of any kind. However I don't know what their contention ratios are like...

http://broadband.sky.com/broadbandbenefits/

Sky offers a truly unlimited Broadband service with Sky Broadband Unlimited. That means unlimited downloads whenever you want, and no 'fair usage' policies hidden away in the small print, Plus whether you take Sky Broadband Base, Everyday or Unlimited, we won't slow you down - even at peak times like other providers.

great if you can get it. I used to manage to sync at 18mbps and download from usenet at a steady 14mbps or more. Bit less now as I moved to 2.5mbps upload and there seems to be a trade off which is fine
I have Be unlimited in london. I get 10x faster speeds than I got for BT less than 20 miles away( I use to live in Surrey). For 17.50 a month including free wireless router, I can't find anything better. I get occasional drop outs, but I'm usually back online in less than 10 minutes. I paid for BT 8meg in surrey, and was only getting about 1.5 down, and .128 up or somthing like that... With Be, well see for yourself:
...
This is over wireless, If I hook up to ethernet, I get a boost of a bout 2-3mbs down

EDIT:
Ethernet:

Edit2: and at peak times, no-less!

I have no idea about 'torrent' stuff.

I use 'MACACE' http://www.macace.net

They are not the cheapest but I believe they are the best/reliable/helpful and totally MAC based.

They do take 'pc-ers'.

Free modem obviously fast and MAC compatible.

Cannot speak too highly of them.

No frills just good service.

Obviously the speeds depend more on where you are than the ISP but you can pay for better service if you want.

There are so many confused posts in this thread. I thought I'd come here and clear a few things up for you all - hopefully you can make more informed choices as a result.

Virgin Media are the UK's only widely available ISP who control every part of their network. They handle everything right down to the socket which you plug the modem into in your house. I'm paying them for 20Mbit/sec at the moment and I am getting very, very close to that.

Most of the UK's ISPs use a technology known as ADSL - it's getting on a bit, and it supports a maximum of 8Mbit/sec downstream - no more. The reality of this is that most of the ISPs simply re-sell connections which they get from BT Wholesale, meaning that at least at a local level, there won't be much (if any) difference between them all.

ISPs which do this are generally quite expensive - O2 for example will sell you 8Mbit/sec for £22.02 per month. There isn't much movement in the price either, as it's all set by BT and the competition is so fierce that your ISP's margins are probably extremely small.

If you don't live in a Virgin Media area, this is probably your only option. However, in some larger towns and cities ISPs are choosing to bypass the BT system in a process known as "Local Loop Unbundling". This involves the ISP coming to your local telephone exchange and installing their own equipment there, which can significantly reduce the cost to them of supplying your service and also affords them several technical freedoms.

The result for the customer is that the prices are usually lower or the speeds are far greater because they use a more modern technology known as ADSL2+. If you're really lucky it will be both cheaper and faster and this is where Be, O2 and Sky's good reputation comes from.

I cannot stress enough that the coverage of these LLU ISPs is EXTREMELY limited - in my home town we can get none of them whatsoever but YMMV. Visit Sam Knows and enter your details and it will show you (on the right hand side) a list of all of the LLU ISPs available in your area. Check them out first.

Beware though, many of the LLU ISPs also offer a product to those who are outside of their coverage areas but as I outlined above, it is usually significantly more expensive and in my experience with O2 its performance is significantly worse because it's just something they're re-selling for BT.

Taking O2 as an example, if you're in their coverage area you can get broadband for £12.23 per month, but if you're outside of it then you have to pay £22.02 per month and will receive worse service, despite both being advertised as "up to 8Mbit/sec".
