A flashcard app for just Hiragana and Katakana.. an app that has a good asian look which allows you to choose which groups of letters you want.. you could select just the Ks, Rs, Ss if you want or you could do all of them..

This app could be even better if it allowed you to learn the strokes for each letter as well.. through drawing them on screen with a finger..

Complicated i know but im sure tons of people who are learning japanese would pay like 3.99 for this.

*cough* sorry for the self promotion*cough* but you're pretty much describing my app exactly! check out the preview in this thread, or the link to . the app on the itunes store :) It's a whole dollar cheaper than what you suggested as well ;)

Katakana is on the way in about a week and a half, and I've just added sound examples as well so it's easier to learn how to pronounce the characters properly :)

An app where you can see other iPhone users (who are running that app at the same time) on a map (using GPS obviously) and exchange messages with them. And for it to be available worldwide. Please.

I have a problem. I'm a fast and efficient programmer but my brain is so left sided I can't think of any good Apps to create so I'm reaching out to the populous to help me out. What kind of Apps would you like to see?

a copy/paste app
a turn by turn gps voice direction app
an app that plays flash from the web

Games wise, i would love to see a full turn based rpg like the old final fantasys but realistically how about a silent scope type game. Pinch to zoom and tap to shoot it would work great. Even a on the rails fps would be cool, kind of like the time crisis games.

I reckon a university level chem/physics app would be killer.

As in a fully functional informational periodic table, a list of all the universal constants. Even a place to do common calculations such as dilutions and whatnot.

The two apps that I miss from my jailbreak days are SysInfo and Stumbler. I hope they make it to the App Store.

I believe that there's a version of Stumbler... but unfortunately I'm completely blanking on what it's called.

a copy/paste app
Basically impossible: this has to be added at the OS level. Even the current open-source "framework" that is being proposed won't work in 2.1 as it's method of operation violates the pre-existing app sandbox
a turn by turn gps voice direction app
Currently disallowed explicitly by the SDK agreement
an app that plays flash from the web
Currently disallowed implicitly by the SDK agreement

-REAL- Mah Jongg Game...

I can tell you what I would definitely love to see made for the iPhone- and that's a multiplayer (using WiFi most likely, though running it over the cell network shouldn't be that hard either...) real Mah Jongg game. The full, 4-players-required (though having computer opponents would definitely be helpful...) version is notably absent in the sea of 'tile matching' games, and it seems to me that the iPhone would be a very good platform for running a real Mah Jongg game.

Run in landscape mode, you could easily display each player's hand and a representation of the wall and the currently discarded pile. Flipped to vertical mode, you could display a smaller version of the player's hand and the other player's hands (i.e., blank tiles for how many are in their hand and what they have played visibly). Touching and dragging up tiles to discard or play would be intuitive (the ability to 'flick' the tile to discard would be fun, along with an animation of the tile falling onto the table).

It would take a fair bit of programming- especially for computer players- but I think it would be a lot of fun to have, and it would be great to be able to play a game on the road or someplace where it's inconvenient to pull out a full Mah Jongg set (OK, so you'd need 4 people with iPhones, but :p). :)

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't know that you HAD to read this thread and HAD to respond to it. If you don't like people asking questions about what apps to create then ignore them. ;)

To everyone else, thanks for the ideas.

Well maybe think of something original on your own, and besides whats so new about whats being covered in this thread, that hasn't been covered in any other 'what app do you want' thread?? There's about fifty app request threads, why not just flip through them, it's not that difficult is it? Besides, half the ideas people contribute here are specific to them, everyone may not want the best note taking app ever made, as some people can give a shiz. All i am saying is, you asked a question that has been responded to hundreds if not thousands of times in other threads. ;)

I am looking for a program that allows a bowler to track individual frames, game scores and weekly/yearly average. If the golfers can have a dozen plus apps, why can't the bowlers have one?

Sort of like this site http://www.allbowling.com/journal/ does, but native to the touch/phone. There are millions of bowlers in the world. I would pay $2.99 no problem for this app.

Pj

Ps I asked in my own thread for this, had a response the first week of the App store and the responder has not reported any progress nor has the app appeared in the store. So yes, I am asking again.

no more crap apps like:
Speed apps
Spirit levels
Gps apps to email your location?!??
Torches(1 is enough apple)
One touch dial
Chess clocks
Bill time clocks
Fuel economy calculators
Unit convert
Bubble wrap

In fact 98% of the apps are so so

Soory sound negative but please give us some worthwhile apps not something which amused you for 2 minutes then never use again.

I seriously need:

An office suite with word processor ( I'm typing this on my iPhone)
Turn by turn gps

Not impressed by apples quality control on apps

Yeah you are sounding negative

I think turn by turn gps would be amusing for 2 minutes.
I mean how useful would that be on a day to day basis?
It would be great to have on a road trip or if you are traveling often for say work but I'm assuming most of us here have daily patterns in our lives that wouldn't really necessitate turn by turn gps. So what I'm saying is that what you covet most is like the rest of the apps you are dissing.

So in the end quality/usefulness is all subjective.

I really applaud all the developers out there who are trying to make the iPhone a viable platform.

TV Guide App

I would love a TV guide app! In it I would want the option of selecting a show i want to view later on and putting it in a list with other shows I want to view. Then alert me about 10 or 20 minutes before the program airs so I dont forget.

Have you seen the sales stats for stand-alone GPS systems in the last 5 or so years?

I've lived in SoCal for over 5 years, and I still use my GPS a few times a week, and find it vital a few times per month. Traffic info on GPS requires a subscription, but is already available on the iPhone 3G, and really adds a big advantage. I think turn by turn GPS is a no-brainer.

Anyway, I agree that it's all subjective, I just disagree with your example. :)
