So the reveal of iOS 9 is just around the corner, what devices do you think it will continue to support?

I think Apple will not drop support for any devices this year, as many A5 powered devices are still sold by Apple.

I agree. With all the buzz about specialized versions of iOS 9 tailored for A5 devices, I doubt we'll see any device drops. In fact, that's probably going to be something they highlight and mention about iOS 9.

Devices I believe Apple will support in iOS 9

  • iPhone 4S
  • iPhone 5
  • iPhone 5C
  • iPhone 5S
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus
  • iPad 2
  • iPad 3
  • iPad 4
  • iPad Air
  • iPad Air 2
  • iPad Mini
  • iPad Mini 2
  • iPad Mini 3

I'm trying to find links, but someone had some pretty valid thoughts on why 4s would be included. Basically, if it is going to be full of bug fixes and optimization I can't see why Apple wouldn't want to push it to 4s. 5+ should very likely see it though.

I think it's surprising that Apple are still supporting older iDevices such as the iPhone 4S, I think it's very good work by them. But I might think that Apple will drop support for the 4S..

My guess is iPhone 5 onwards will be supported

Retina iPads upwards?
I absolutely agree with u.. Ip5 and up,Ipad 3 and up, Ipad mini2 and up

NO A5 DEVICES!!!!!

See how the Original Ipad ended with IOS 5
How the I4 ended with IOS 7
AND
HOW THE IPAD 2 AND IP4S WILL END in IOS 8... AND THATS IT ... ACCEPT IT!! THERE IS NO NEED TO A 4 YEAR OLD MOBILE DEVICE GET UPDATED!!!
THE ORIGINAL IPAD IS SO SLOW ON IOS 5... SO WHY THEY DIDNT RELEASE A SPECIAL VERSION OF IOS 6 FOR THE ORIGINAL IPAD? THE SAME APPLY FOR I4

Woah, calm down.

Yes true, iOS 5 was the last supported version of iOS for the original iPad. However, that is because that iPad only came with 256mb RAM, and iOS 6 required devices with a minimum of 512mb RAM to run the OS.

This is the reason to why I think Apple with still support A5 devices this year, with all of the rumours that iOS 9 is all going to be about bug fixes and optimisations.

The iPhone 4's last version of iOS was iOS 7, however that is because it carried a single core A4 chip.

I will keep my prediction for IOS 9..., I DOUBT that A5 devices will get it.... all older devices end up slow with the latest IOS....look at Ip 4... ended slow with IOS 7..and now the 4s will end slow....but I think the Ip5 will get 4 major updates... because of the A6 processor that is undoubtly superior than A5

The A5 was a big leap too though because of being dual-core.

They still sell the iPod touch 5th Gen, iPad mini 1st Gen and Apple TV 3rd Gen. All are A5 based. That would be ridiculous for the A5 not to get the update. Especially since the latest rumor is the new Apple TV won't be ready in time for WWDC. Also, every SoC update is superior to the previous one but not always a huge jump. The A4 to the A5 was a huge jump, A5 to A6 was a small step. A6 to A7 was a ginormous jump. A7 to A8, minuscule.

The iPhone 3GS has only 256 MB of RAM and runs iOS 6.

So did the 4th Gen iPod touch. Really weird. So sad the first gen iPad showed it age so soon. It was a great device.

If iOS 9, as speculated, is supposed to introduce no new major features but instead has a focus on performance & stability, isn't it all but obvious that devices that had iOS 8 support will almost definitely get the very amazing iOS 9?

They will drop the 4S I would imagine, if only to say to developers "stop worrying about this screen size".
The original iPad Mini is still on sale, so I think it will definitely get iOS 9.

True but the iPad screen had a much larger resolution, so more of this RAM was taken as video memory and was therefore not available to applications.

Higher resolution has nothing to do with memory. There was NO reason for the original iPad not to get iOS 6. Absolutely none. The 3GS ran an inferior chip, yet it still got iOS 6. If :apple: do something like this again, I will go mad.

Both very different devices. iOS 6 was NOT a performance update. The iPad 1 couldn't cope with iOS 5, it was underpowered something shocking form the beginning. It at held a very low market share, and in 2012 there were no other iPads with identical specs still for sale.

Same with the iPhone 4. iOS 8 was an update that uses more ram more and more cpu due to the new features. Again, there were no A4 devices on sale in 2014 (well at least in the US).

I have no idea what you've got aganist A5 devices.

Anyways. I think it will be iPad 2, 3, 4, Air 1, Air 2 - iPod Touch 5 - iPhone 4S, 5, 5S, 6.

That makes sense for a number of reasons.

1. If iOS 9 is a performance update, it thus improves performance and then there is no reason to drop older devices, as they will presumably will also improve performance wise. Every other iOS update has been aimed solely at new features, or new designs, not at stability, reliability and performance. I pretty much assume that iOS 9 will be a performance update given that we've had constant rumours. If they were totally wrong, Apple would have leaked that it wasn't the case so false expectations were not created.

2. Apple is selling 3 A5 devices. The Apple TV is not as important, but the iPad Mini 1 and iPod Touch 5 are. Apple has had plenty of chance to drop either device. Every single device that gets supported in an update, has been on sale during the WWDC of that year. EG the 4 was for sale when iOS 7 was introduced at WWDC, the 3GS was being sold when iOS 6 was introduced at WWDC 2012 and it goes on. Apple don't drop devices that are on sale at the time they announce their next version of iOS. The iPod 4 was dropped before WWDC. Also its a bit harder for them to stop support for two devices they're still selling during WWDC. There would be a backlash (bigger than that of the iPod Touch 4), as the iPad Mini 1 is selling in volume - in Q4 2014 they sold more iPad Mini 1s than 2s or 3s.

3. Combining the iPad 2, 3 and Mini 2, gets you around 50-60 percent of the installed iPad base. This would be to do with the long sales of the iPad 2 and iPad Mini and the fact that many are still content with these devices. It wouldn't be smart to fragment its iOS distribution to the extent you have more iPad users left behind on an outdated version of iOS than not.

4. The 4S has come up in logs as running iOS 9.

5. The rumours have all suggested that A5 devices are getting iOS 9. If they were that wrong I would think that Apple would have leaked to reduce expectations. The specific rumour is that Apple has created a method if

6. Apple does not have set support cut off periods for its devices. The 2G and 3G got 2 updates, the 3GS and 4 have received 3 updates each. Perhaps the 4S and 5 are going to get 4. This is not a bad thing and you've got to remember there are a lot of users who have bought an A5 device in the past year, and deserve another update, and there are a lot of users who would have more time to save up for a newer device, while using their 4S/iPad 2 etc, instead of jumping to an android device. I know plenty of people who bought a 3GS or a 4 very late in the piece as thats all they could afford, and when they lost support, they went to Android.

I'm pretty sure the iPhone 5 will be included as it was the base handset for Apple Watch compatibility.

I was honestly surprised/impressed when they announced no devices dropped. The iPad 2 will have lived through 6 major iOS versions! That's a new record right? I think it's safe to say that Apple is the king of supporting older devices via updates!

iPad 2 already holds the record of going through 5 supported major updates and now it has increased to 6. 4s is behind by 1. But 4s will most likely never match or beat iPad 2's record, because the moment iPad 2 support drops, so would other A5 devices including 4s.

I predict at least Air 2 will beat iPad 2's record eventually. Just a matter of when.
