Blizzard knows that people who won't buy it because it is late is MUCH less then those who won't buy it if it comes out really buggy. Thus delivering late and a quality product is much better then early and crappy. Simple economics.

They don't care about those who whine that it's 3 months or 6 months late; because when it comes out and is really good, 90% of those people who swore to never buy it will buy it anyway.

Look at Starcraft II, how long did it take? 10+ years? Sold very well. Would have thought those people would have really given up on it; but they haven't.

Blizzard, more then most companies, knows what the customer wants and how to deliver it to them. They have a reputation of quality; and thus a very loyal following. If they start rushing things out the door people would start to lose faith in them and their overall sales would go down.

For me, there are two companies who's software I would buy without hesitation if I wanted it. Blizzard and Valve; both have produced very top quality games. Both do the same thing, they won't release early if it isn't right. iD is another company that does this but their games are not my style; but they are good games and not bug feasts -- although they never focused on single player.

Easiest way to not be bothered; stop reading game magazines and websites. Seriously their opinions of games are tainted by advertising and are often hyping things years before it is out. Only when a game is released; then go read up on the reviews of it. This way, you're never waiting on any game and you don't have to deal with all the hype.

BTW, Diablo III development was a secret for a very long time, but then there was an internal memo that accidentally leaked it to everyone inside of Blizzard. It was a short time after that Blizzard announced it; I believe that the two are closely related.

Well, I do consider more than one persons statement as proof of what I'm saying. Since I'm clearly not alone in my opinion, which you can see by reading just this page and the one before, and taken the rest of the planets sub-7 billion people into account, then yes.

And like I already stated, if you had read my post properly, I didn't make any claims as to the amount.

Less whine, more thinking please.

Young Spade has a point. There is no fact or validity in your statement as you're purely basing it on what has been said in this thread and maybe a few other forums. it's not indicative of what may happen in reality. I suspect the long wait will not deter that many people and Diablo III will be as big a success as Blizard's previous releases.

Lets face it, game houses that are small and indy are a rare breed. Ever rarer on the PC/Mac platform. The indy houses are all about iOS. Blizzard is a part of EA a HUGE comapny. Along with the resources that helps them comes the red tape and BS that hurts them. I have read much of the original talent that developed D2 has left the company so that hurts, but then fresh blood brings new ideas and creativity.

Blizzard is not part of EA. Never has.

Yeah the original Diablo team left and started their own dev house. They made Torchlight and are releasing Torchlight 2 soonish.

Blizzard is actually a part of Activision. That said they are for the most part independent of Activision control and management wise and the way they operate and work has not really changed since they joined Activision. If any of the team has left it's not because of the merger and is perfectly normal. In the gaming industry people leave and form their own companies or join other teams all the time.

Blizzard is not part of Activision. Both are completely separate entities under the division Activision Blizzard, which is the game dev arm of the parent company Vivendi. Activision has no say or authority over what Blizzard does and vice versa.

Jay Wilson said that we'll get the beta in early September or earlier. This is true, head to ForceSC2Strategy's youtube or Diablofans.com and you'll see. There was also some cool new stuff revealed at Gamescom 2011.

Blizzard seems to do this for most of their games, and they usually sell well so I dunno, it's worked for them before.

What I really want is Warcraft IV though. Forget WoW, SC2, and Diablo 3 :(

I can't understand why people say they won't buy a game just because it takes a long time to release. It's the same with Episode 3. Sure, waiting this long sucks, but in the end it is going to come out and be amazing. And if it was released a year sooner, it wouldn't be as amazing. Those people are just impatient idiots, you'll get your game in the end, just focus on other games in the meantime.

I didn't read the entire thread, but I don't understand why the doubt.

Beta is beginning next month or so, and Blizzard is aiming for a release before the end of the year.

Follow the diablofans website for more information.

There is no need to be so nit picky about my post. I'm well aware that Blizzard is run independently from Activision and that the latter has no influence or say in the running of the former. They are still part of the same company which is know as Activision Blizzard which is what I meant to say. My point was that they are not owned by, part of or in any way associated with EA. I don't need you to tell me that.

----------

I got a chance to play it yesterday and on Thursday all be it for about 15 minutes each time. It's fair to say that it's more of the same at it's core but it has advanced a lot over the previous two games and is looking and playing really awesome.

I too don't get people who refuse to buy the game because it was announced so long ago and there is no sign of a release date. At the end of the day if you've been waiting to play it and like it then you should buy it and not do so in order to spite Blizzard. As someone already said this is typical of Blizzard, Valve and even id Software.

As far as I'm aware there are no official minimum or reccommended system requirements yet. Blizzard has a tendency to make their games scalable and such Diablo III should run on virtually any current or recently released hardware. You may need to turn all or some of the settings down depending on your hardware specifications. When I played it the other day it was obviously on the highest end systems currently available but I don't think the game will be as demanding as other new releases. I suspect any system that can play Starcraft II reasonably well will also run Diablo III.

These man-baby threads never cease to amuse.

Yes, waiting can be hard, but rest assured the beta will be out in less than a month and the game will be out in less than six months. When it comes out it will be head and shoulders above most other titles like every other game they've done. If it was any other way they wouldn't be Blizzard, we wouldn't care about this game, and there wouldn't be this thread.

It's been a LONG times since I played DiabloII. I have been favorably impressed with Torchlight and am wondering in what ways DIII will be superior, anyone? I'm thinking it will have better graphics, graphic animations for spells, and possibly more depth.

I'll let Blizzard do their thing and they release the game when they think its ready. I love all their games so they can take their sweet time, they make quality games with amazing support.

Hey, do you have a neighbor named Palin? Has she been good for the local economy? :D

Did they punt it too soon? Yes
Will everyone still buy it? Yes.

None issue.

this.

Blizzard would never have the fan base they have if they were a factory like EA.
It's like a girlfriend. If you are always around holding her hand she will get bored and leave. If you take some distance she will come to you running. Same thing with Blizz'. They don't give you anything so when the game comes out you run to buy it ! (this is an image, it does not reflect everyone's reality !)

Seems a given that it will appear eventually. I think next year is a given. Surprised anyone would suggest that it would be of lower quality as Blizzard has a long, proven, and consistent history. It'll sell like hotcakes whenever it does get released and everyone knows it.

The original team didn't all just up and leave Blizzard, some had left before then and a couple are still at Blizzard AFAIK.

First thing they did, long before Torchlight, was creating Flagship Studios and develop and release Hellgate London, an online Diabloesque mostly-pay-to-play MMO-ish SHMUP. I was really interested until I heard about the online and pay-to-play aspects, and then I thought "frak them". And so did tons of other people, and when the game came out it was hella rushed and buggy, and thusly Flagship sunk, never to be heard or seen from again.

So enter Runic Entertainment and Torchlight, a much MUCH less ambitious production than either Hellgate or either of the Diablos (D2 especially). After all, there's a reason everything looks like it was ripped out of a comic book in Torchlight...

Now, I'm not ripping on the game, I think it's great, and seriously good value for money even at full price, but its gameplay mechanics are clearly not as well thought-out as Diablo 2's, and compared to what D3 is going to be it'll be no competition at all. Biggest issue I have is with the item pre/suffixes, there's just too many different ones and it's difficult to judge wether one item will be an upgrade or a downgrade compared to another with so many different and wonky weapon and armor effects.

Diablo2 was done by Blizzard North, they all left to start Flagship studios; Blizzard North was completely shut down. I do not recall anyone moving from Blizzard North to the main headquarters.

Now, Diablo2 gameplay was designed mostly by Blizzard HQ but coded by Blizzard North; although they worked together on it. The coding of D2 was universally panned by the Blizzard HQ; saying that it was such a hack that they were afraid to touch the code. Thus why it took so long for patches / fixes / updates to come out. Somehow the skill system was all interconnected to the quest system connected to the combat system; touch one thing would break something else -- really produced some very bizarre bugs.

Diablo3 team is working from the ground up, totally new engine (D2 as based on a heavily modified D1 engine). This should allow for better quality of game.

That wasn't the straw that broke the camels back, however. What's been alluded to in interviews was that there was a D3 already made by Blizzard North shortly after the D2 releases... they submitted it to HQ and they were not impressed (I think unoriginal and boring came to mind), and shortly thereafter BN got the axe.
