I have a very specific issue that would be good to see others try to replicate please.

Instructions/requirements to test;

- MBP M1 w/ BS 11.3 (MBA seems to be OK at this test) SO specifically 'MBPro'.
- Load into diagnostics - Long hold power you will see the disk and options cog display, then hold cmd+D until language selection displays.
- Then select 'I Agree' to run the online version of the diagnostics.

Can you report if this completes or whether it just hangs and never gets going?

Since iv had this MBP diagnostics has never been able to load, after 11.3 update I can now get it to load and seemingly start to run but it just hangs and I have to power down. - Apple support want me to totally wipe the machine and reinstall MacOS, id rather see if others can replicate this before this drastic step is taken!

Thanks,
Jay

Hi Jay!

I have a M1 Macbook Air (512/8), and exactly the same problem.
It totally freezes at the "Checking your Mac" loading mention and I have to reboot the computer...

I'm trying to figure if it's a hardware or software glitch and it's very frustrating. Anybody else?

So I found that, apparently we're not the only ones!

Again, on a M1 MBA diagnostics would not run on 11.2.2 or 11.2.3.
A total restore of 11.2.3 using Apple configurator 2 (including wiping the disc) did not solve the issue.
Upgrading to 11.3 did resolve my issue. Diagnostics now runs.
I appreciate that's not happened for you though :)

Yeah still not working on 11.3
Glad it worked for some people, that mean there's hope. I suppose Apple knows about that also.

Just an idea but is your power adapter plugged in when you're trying to run it?
I have read that this is necessary though I have not tried running it without the adapter being plugged in.

Yeah, always plugged.
I tried to select English instead of French and run it offline instead of online. Nothing goes :/

Do you have access to a second Mac capable of running the later versions of Apple Configurator 2?
My 2012 rMBP was modern enough.

I don't but I tried a clean install via recovery yesterday and it didn't work. Would using Congigurator 2 change the outcomes?

Possibly.
I think the re-install through recovery is supposed to re-write/update the recovery partition but not absolutely sure.
The Apple configurator 2 method blasts the drive and re-writes everything anew so if you have a software problem that should cure it. Sadly we don't know the cause of your problem, as I didn't with mine.

Ok so I have a 2014 iMac 27 inches.
So I just install Configurator 2 on this an plus via USB?

Ok so I just did the DFU thing with my iMac and reinstalled the whole system. Apparently it worked, got the full diagnostic tool running and everything is alright, they didn't find any issue with the Mac ;) Weirly feels like when I go to the doctor and he tells me I'm STD free after a blood test :p

Anyway, thanks a lot for your help guys!
Glad you got it working.

Restoring / Reviving using Configurator is my favorite way to install new updates or solve a problem. As you saw, it is fast and trouble free.

Great to hear that there is a way to fix this using configurator. Sadly I don’t have a second Mac to use!

By clean install, do you mean that you erased the drive and then reinstalled MacOS? or, just reinstalled MacOS?

Thanks

I have the same exact problem on my M1 MBA. Diagnostics mode immediately hangs in both online and offline mode. It’s on 11.3.

I had never run it before today so it had to download the diagnostics thing.

I don’t have another Mac to try the Configurator 2 thing. Even if I did, that is drastic.

I contacted Apple Support and this is a known issue that they are trying to collect data on.

Edit:

Got disconnected from chat and when I reconnected and they got me in touch with a senior care specialist that person had never heard of this problem and had me simply do a first aid on the disk’s data partition which didn’t help. She then forwarded it to engineering.

This is an issue more on Apple's end, I have had multiple chats and calls with AppleCare who made me restore the Mac and reinstall. - This didn't fix the issue, now off to engineers. Iv also sent a feedback report, I suggest you do the same please.

I have my MBA’s logic board replaced last week and got it back last Tuesday. I noticed that there were over thousand of errors and faults. I tried the diagnostics and it locked up every time. Now it’s back to apple store again. Hopefully they will fix it.

I submitted a feedback report, but in years of doing with the feedback app on a number of devices, I’ve never had the report get acknowledged or change from open.

Years ago on the old report site I used to sometimes get responses, but I don’t think anyone reads the new feedback reports.
