Did anyone else buy the iPad Pro just because of this ?

I can't imagine needing 1TB on an iPad
I don't even come close to using the 1TB on my MBP
I understand everyone's situation is different (amount of music, pictures, videos, etc)
It would just be total overkill for me
But so would the 512GB

no. when i want that much portable storage i buy a usb drive, not a tablet.

Why not have lots of movies and tv shows on the go ? Without having to bring a usb drive too with you everywhere ?

because Apple charges an obscene up charge for that storage capacity. on my 128GB 12.9 ipad pro, i have lots of movies and 10,000+ of tracks of music with plenty of room left. when i travel, i take my RavPower FileHub+128GB microSD cards + usb thumb drives for additional media. For less than half of what Apple charges to go to 512GB i was able to buy the Filehub and TB’s-worth of storage that is usable not only with the ipad but with the rest of my dervices.
Maybe if you have a ton of files in Dropbox and had synced them all to your iPad.

To answer the original post ... I did, but 512gb is still much too small. As you near the capacity limit apparently your device also slows down. I will be waiting for a 1 tb and above capacity in the future.
I’ll say this ... mathematically calculated, 512gb will not fit all the videos I want. I am currently re-encoding my videos to free up some space. But I am also sacraficing video quality and quantity.
I plan to have the following TV sitcom stored on my 12.9 512gb:
1. Big Bang Theory
2. Friends TV sitcom
3. Seinfeld
4. Frasier
5. Everybody Loves Raymond
6. Will and Grace
All of the above amounts to 300gb.
I also have Disney and other animations that will fill up to around 200gb.
This leaves me with basically NO room for music.
I’m seeing them listed for $39.99 on amazon.

My media files are very big with 2k and 4k content so that is why I need so much space. Though I could get by with 1080p.
Right, depends on needs. I travel for weeks at a time to areas with no Internet access and also want the additional storage for photo/video backup so external storage works better.
Not for me, 64GB is plenty. I use cloud storage for all my files, iCloud Music and Photo library, and Plex for all my movies from my server.
Not quite but almost. I was already planning on getting a Pro 12.9 so the 512GB option came as a very welcome surprise. Mind, if I hadn't already been planning on buying an iPad though, the 512GB storage would've been reason enough to upgrade for me.
However, for month-long travel I still bring a laptop (Plex server) + 2x 4TB HDDs (mirrored) for music, videos and photo backup. I got the 512GB iPad primarily for my fave and TBR comics pile. Can't quite stream comics reliably. At least video streaming services limit quality depending on connection. Comics is all or nothing.
I've really got ~700GB effective iPad storage though. The 256GB Pro 9.7 is dedicated to manga (5" x 7.5") and ebooks now. Comics (6.75" x 10.125") got offloaded to the 512GB Pro 12.9 and it's spacious enough that I can now store all 7 seasons of GoT and still be left with plenty of free space. Before, I didn't really store videos on my iPads as I barely have enough space for my fave/TBR comics/manga.

Plex is great because if you want to go offline it will encode the files for your specific device (and you can adjust size/quality). I have a 256 GB iPad but I think I could squeeze by with 32 GB if I needed to. I only got the larger size because I intend to pass this device to other family and I know those people will need a bit more storage than me.

The idea of storing full quality 4K content on the iPad seems a little crazy when a smaller file size will still look just as good.

With the creation of professional capable video editing apps like LumaFusion I think some people will have use for high storage capacity iPads. LumaFusion edits 4k video, which can be a storage hog.
