I didnt think it had been launched and low and behold it's on the apps home page and the release date is 5th of july...I've been waiting for this app I remember people asking at the time of launch when it was coming out, was it there all along?

IMO, AOL Radio is better than Pandora. Pandora doesn't allow you to view bookmarked songs on the iPod which my whole point of internet radio is to get new songs and if i don't have the $0.99, i bookmark them and get them later but with Pandora i have to go to a computer to view my bookmarked songs and it's a major inconvenience to me. with AOL Radio i can view my bookmarks straight from my iPod. i haven't tried last.fm yet but i'm installing it now.
EDIT: i don't like Last.fm at all and pandora is way better, but i still think AOL Radio is better than pandora, at least until pandora lets you view bookmarks on the iPod
Yep, Last.fm's been there for at least a week now.
It doesn't scrobble tracks from the iPhone's iPod function, though, like I had hoped (an SDK limitation). It only scrobbles from the various Last.fm radios that you can play from within the app (which is basically just a glorified web app).
As for people claiming Pandora or AOL and other apps are better for streaming music -- well, they may be. But if you're an actual subscriber on Last.fm, it's important to have the "scrobbling" feature so that you can build up your music-listening profile. The more you listen to, the more Last.fm knows what other music you may like, and can reccomend new stuff to you -- all while connecting you with other users with similar tastes. So there's a lot of reasons why a Last.fm subscriber might choose the Last.fm app over other streaming radios.

Yeah I've been using it since the day it was released last week. Not sure what to think of it yet.
They all do different things. Last.FM is more of a social utility that specializes in music than it is radio. Pandora is a program designed to introduce you to music that is related to music you like. AOL Radio is radio, pure and simple.
So its really difficult to compare them. I like them all and use them all for entirely different purposes. I'd say that AOL radio needs the fewest changes, but its also the simplest implementation, as it is just a simple web radio player. Whereas last.fm does the most in its full web version and thus it has more room to expand with updates.
I find Last.FM to be WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than Pandora.
Lots more ways to build playlists and just way richer in every way.

You don't seem to understand what Pandora is. I suggest you go to their website and educate yourself.
I haven't tried Pandora, but I've read that people say the Last.fm client has better audio quality.
i wanted to use pandora but they can't stream to Japan so i went with last.fm
the only thing i dont like about it is that it doesnt buff the next song in advance so there is a 1 minute or so gap between songs

I missed it, too. After my first few searches through the App Store I had it organized by release date. I only happened to find Last.fm a few days ago when I reorganized by name since I couldn't remember the name of a certain app.
I wish it scrobbled my personal collection. I rarely use it to listen to the radio. Also, there's a way to have tracks played on Pandora scrobbled into your Last.fm account, but I doubt it works on the iPhone.

when you plug your iPhone back into iTunes, it updates the play count for all the songs you listened to, then if you open up the Last.fm app for the Mac, it will scrobble the songs you listened to on the iPhone. Complicated, but it does get the job done.
Not sure why people aren't liking Last.FM. Its a Far superior service to Pandora. You do need to scrobble your tracks on iTunes though in order to "train" it. But once you have a decent number of scrobbled tracks, loved tracks and friends then it becomes a brilliant tool.
I've ended my subscription to XM Satellite Radio.

I travelled down the road yesterday and had very few dropouts with Pandora. I pump my iphone through my car speaker system and the sound is beyond exceptional.
I might add that the sound quality from the iphone is right on par with XM. Seems that XM once touted "CD Like" sound, but in the past few years they compress the hell out of the signal to put as many channels on their satellite transponders. Pandora sounds "almost' as good as XM sounds today!

You know, I'm about ready to cancel 2 of my 3 XM subs myself, especially since the XM/Sirius merger has been approved. I rarely listen to it anymore and I've been listening to either AOL radio or Last FM. If there ever is an XM app for the iPhone, I will use it with my last active XM sub.

Agreed. People aren't understanding that Last.fm is a SOCIAL website (like Facebook) for music-lovers. It doesn't make much sense to have the Last.fm app on your iPhone/Touch unless you have a Last.fm profile, and have been scrobbling tracks for a while. It's kind of like downloading the Facebook app without having a Facebook profile or any friends -- not very useful.
So what does this scrobbling thing do? I have it enabled on my phone. If I understand it right, it will list the songs that I listen to on my iPhone library on last FM. What is this Mac app someone else mentioned? It sounded like it was needed to get the scrobbling to work.

Theoretically, I don't think you'll need the Mac software to scrobble songs (though it helps!). You just need a Last.fm profile, and then you can access the various Last.fm radios through the iPhone app, and your songs will be scrobbled then.
However, I think it's best when you scrobble your own songs from iTunes -- that way it builds a more accurate music profile for you. Be warned, it can take a LOT of scrobbling before you start seeing the benefits -- but once you do, it's definitely worth it. I've discovered SO many new bands that are my style from Last.fm, while also making tons of friends who listen to similar stuff (not just casual internet friends, but really close friends I regulary do stuff with). Plus, I've been connected to many concerts I otherwise would have missed. It's for serious music lovers, and when it works, it works beautifully.
