That's true. Actually the local download speeds have now been boosted to around 9, so I think I will stick to Sonos. What would be the benefit of a Homepod? I dunno
I've sold my entire Sonos setup (7 speakers + Connect Amp) and replaced it with 2 Sonos speakers and 2 HomePods.
The benefit of the HomePod over the Sonos is for other smart features. I use the HomePods to control lights, locks, fans, etc via HomeKit. Plus I can have the HomePod read/send messages and soon it will be able to make phone calls via Verizons Calling from iCloud devices feature. Setting timers/alarms, asking the random question usually math equations. Etc
Sonos speakers undoubtedly sound great. The 2 Sonos speakers I have now are a One and a Beam. For music the Beam sounds awesome however its not that great of a sound bar for TV (HDMI ARC only, 5.1 only without better codec decoding at all) which is basically its intended purpose. Although the Beam alone sounds better than many dedicated surround sound systems and definitely better than faux surround sound (systems that beam/reflect sound).
I love Sonos however their focus is too narrow for an honest HomePod vs Sonos discussion without speaking STRICTLY about music. I'll hold onto the Sonos One however I'll likely sell the Beam for a sound bar with better flexibility. Don't get me wrong the HomePod is even more limiting when it comes to TV audio and is definitely not a suitable replacement.
