did apple know about the ipad's low battery quality / problems before release?

is that why they pre-announced the battery offer of sending in your ipad and replacing it with a new one if your battery dies?
 
right, but i don't see what that has to do with my question.
they've never announced a battery device swap for any other product,
and then the ipad has a large amount of battery issues on release.
 
Of course, this is only my opinion, but yes, they must have known or their QA people should be fired.
My guess.. they had deadlines and obligations and decided to go ahead with the release and fix it later.
Much like they did with Leopard (*COUGHSNOWLEOPARDCOUGH*)

Where are you hearing about a "large amount of battery issues"? I haven't heard of widespread issues, and mostly I've heard rave reviews of how long the battery lasts.
 
I haven't heard of that problem, the most I have heard that is related to the battery is charging issues when conecting it to some
computers via USB.

I haven't heard of battery problems either. In fact apple has preannojnced battery replacement programs for many of their devices with non-user replaceable batteries to shut the media up over a silly issue.
 
Batteries are the last thing I worry about with Apple products. MBP batteries are great and from what I hear the iPad battery is extremely good. iPhone could be better, but pretty much all smart phones have crappy battery life right now.
 
I wasn't aware that the iPad's battery was of low quality. I've mostly heard about how great the battery is.

Oh!..I knew it! The whole time I was in Pep Boys getting my new battery they knew it was gonna go bad...they kept telling me the replacement cost and I didn't listen....shoddy products...:p

wow...go figure...a battery that runs out. What, next thing you know you'll have a bic pen run out of ink or something...:rolleyes:

by "large amount of issues" you mean lots of people reporting that the battery lasts longer than Apple's specs, yes? if not, umm, you might consider doing a bit more research.
 
I expect since the iPad is a little pricey for the throw-away tech Apple developed in the iPod, and to a lesser extent the iPhone (e.g., it breaks, buy a new one) so they had a little forethought and offered a replacement program for people who want to replace a battery that has gone soft.

With integrated batteries in all the notebook lines and all the iPod/iPhone lines, don't they offer the same for those devices?

No.

They pre-announced battery offers because in recent years they have been getting criticized for having a closed battery system on iPods and iPhones. So in response they have been more and more proactive about getting battery replacement information out to the public. This time they even did it before the release because they have learned from experience that one of the first questions the whiners will ask is how to replace a battery.

And there are no widespread battery issues with iPads. Most people are stunned at how well the battery lasts. The issues you see online are tiny in number compared to the number of iPads in the field.

Troll... wifi connectivity + won't charge on old USB 1 computers does not equate to "low battery quality" in any shape or form. Apple announced it because they were pre-empting the trolling of those who talk about batteries that are not user replaceable.

No problem with legit complaints, there are enough to keep you busy.

I've heard of problems (WiFi nonsense, charging nonsense) but nothing about batteries. Maybe the OP is coming from the future like this guy and knows something we don't!
 
Apple announced the battery replacement program because people get their panties in a bunch about non-removable batteries. So, buyers know exactly what to expect if they ever need to get a battery replaced outside of warranty.

Indeed, there is precedent for announcing a battery replacement program before shipping.

17" Macbook Pro was announced on 6 January 2009.

This is nothing abnormal.
 
The $99 fee that they charge for replacing the iPad's battery is the same as the $80 battery replacement program they've had for the iPhone since 2007 and the same program they have for the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Your iPad is under warranty for it's 1st year (2yrs is you bought apple care), after your warranty is over, then you'll need to pay $99 to replace it, but not before.

I'm also curious what battery issues, mine has been lasting me almost 12hrs on a single charge.

The iPhone, iTouch and MacBook Airs all have had battery replacement plans announced.
 
Great battery life

Took a flight yesterday. Watched almost four hours of video on my iPad. Got to the hotel and had 75% of my battery left. I'd say that's amazing.

No it doesn't. The battery issues are the exception and id guess less than 1%
