This makes me wonder whether inside Apple's R&D labs, do they have macOS installed on iPads to see how that works out? Maybe just to see how macOS runs on their A-series chips. I would guess they have at least tried it

I would be shocked if they didn't. They probably have iPads running MacOS, prototype MacBooks/iMacs with their own processors in them, iPads running some kind of hybrid 'PadOS' that's a cross between iOS and MacOS, etc. I'm sure Apple's well aware of how gimped iPads are, because of the current state of the OS it runs, and that so many of us want to go iPad only but can't.

I use mine for some work, it’s to retorted and convulsive way of working, but I’m a a masochist so it’s fine.

Seriously the iPad can’t be use as a main computer unless you were born using only smartphones and it’s all that you need, but the moment you need to get serious about work, and life in general, the iPad starts to break apart.

Kudos for you for tying, it’s the best way to be sure if it works or not.

I tried too and it didn’t work for me, but it was very close, let’s say a 80% of my normal use was covered by the iPad.

I was ready to toss it out of the window after about 2 hours as it was just so clunky and convoluted to get anything done.
Did you try to cut and paste? text or images? It is "so clunky and convoluted"

I have found the key to using an iPad is the more in control of your output you are, the more successful you will be.

My workplace requires Word, Excel, and Visio for my job. The Word file requires macros. Obviously, none of this I can do on an iPad. Or a Mac, really, since Omnigraffle's Visio component isn't that good for the diagrams we do.

However, if I was a consultant submitting a PDF of the document, I could use Omnigraffle since I don't need to make a VDX file, and use Ulysses or Word to generate the PDF.

This is the challenge for line workers in Corporate America. It is hard to get stuff done on an iPad if it positively, absolutely, has to be done a certain specific way.

I would imagine there are lots of people that could use an iPad while mobile and a desktop Mac back at the office. The iPad is great for taking notes, reading and annotating PDFs, creating draft documents, sending emails, scheduling and planning....light productivity tasks. Desktops are great for heavy lifting; building large presentations, big documents, complex spreadsheets, and creating databases.

It kind of makes sense to use a mobile operating system when mobile and a desktop operating system when at the office. That said; iPad would definitely benefit from some software improvements to enhance productivity. The hardware is plenty powerful, but the software has a ways to go. Hopefully, iOS 13 will include some much needed enhancements.

Ditched the X280 for a MacBook 12", then ditched it for... an iPad Air 3 (256GB this time).

I switched jobs, work laptop provided, no longer need to use my own device. Now, outside of work the iPad is superb!

I'm retired now but the very large company I worked for explicitly disallowed the use of personal computing devices (laptops, home desktops, phones, tablets, etc.) for work purposes, including email.

Same here, but your own device on your own mobile hotspot alongside the screen for note taking / own task prioritisation seems to be fine. I appreciate the complete segregation too - no work emails entering my mind when out of the office etc.

Our strictures were tighter - your notebooks were considered company property due to the concerns of data security.

I worked for a global company and while most work was done on a company laptop, they paid a monthly phone allowance and the expectation was that you would keep up with emails.

My iPP replaced my MBP a long time ago. Even easier with iOS13. Honesty, many of these “workarounds” people talk about are not really workarounds to those of us that have developed our workflows with iOS. My kids have grown up with iPads for school and would consider using a MBP a “workaround”. It’s all mostly what workflow a person is used to using. Funny how a persons age plays into their workflow being normal or considered a workaround.

Here, too! I haven't used a laptop for any work related issues for a long time. All my mobile work is on my iPP, and I'm and old guy!

Yeah the thing people need to remember when users testify for/against a device being an effective tool is that when a person testifies that the device suits all of their needs that speaks just as much about the prowess or shortcomings of the device as it does the needs of that individual. An evaluation needs to be made as to whether or not that individual has similar needs as you, and if that evaluation can't be made then the testimony should be taken with a grain of salt.

Right tool for the right job I always say. I have no doubt that an iOS device fills all of the needs of many people, just as I have no doubt that the same will never be true for me.

The iPad has surpassed the time I spent with the 12" MacBook now! I don't miss it. I kinda miss my X280 but I don't need it..
