Did the Air just kill the iPad?

I'm curious. I'm not an iPad owner, though I think it'd be a fun toy. Sure, I can't use some iOS App Store games, but I'd be able to use an Air a lot more than an iPad. Now that the new Airs have [FINALLY] been released, I can't really see an iPad in my future! For ultra-portability and functionality, I think the Air just killed the iPad for me.

I was going to get an MBA, but then went for the iPad as it served the purpose for which I wanted the MBA - email / websurfing on the couch. Now this? I really like my iPad, but I'd rather have the new MBA than it.

Yes. I think Apple now has competing products in the same areas.

iPad is nothing like the Air, for one it has the cut down OS, the price is a lot cheaper.

The iPad is the alternative if you do not want a Notebook but still get to do things that a notebook does.....but in a more mobile way

Two different devices, two different needs.

One touchscreen, one not.

Totally different apps.

Frankly, most people will still get an ipad, this new Air didnt kill anything, not even the ipad, slow your roll

The iPad will still be far more enjoyable for me for reading my PDF's and books. Also, I use iPad as a map and navigation device when out in town; don't see how MacBook Air would replace it in that regard.

I don't think so. The iPad still has built in, contract-free 3G service, a touchscreen, GPS, the entire constellation of iOS apps, iBooks etc. The iPad is also still more portable and is cheaper.

I think the Macbook Air satisfies a different niche.

I think it comes closer to killing the Mac Book than the iPad.

Same CPU, same GPU, same ports, same RAM and add the SSD for the same price. If you need an optical drive, it is only $79. For that you get 5 hours of battery life, plus the instant on and 30 day standby time.

Sounds like a Mac Book killer to me.

same threads popped up when the ipad came out vs. 13 mbp. nothing has died and nothing has killed anything. they serve two needs. one is a full fledged laptop that uses os x, the other is an ios device. just because they can both read emails doesn't mean one will kill the other.

Not at all. But u still have a point: Some people where thinking about buying an ipad instead of a macbook, and now the may want a mba instead.

In my case, i was waiting today to know if i can have a mba instead of a macbook for the same money i wanted to spend - and i can, so i will.

Point taken. Also, he probably doesn't see the new macbook air as a netbook, but I don't know what else to call a laptop with an 11.6 inch screen and a tiny keyboard.

Granted, its got a few things no other netbook has which make it more usable--and much more expensive. However, its a still a netbook.

Not the same. The $999 model has only a 1.4GHz/1.6GHz underclocked CPU with 1/2 the L3 cache and only a 800MHz memory bus. You are taking a performance hit if go with that model.

The new 13" versions are $100's more in price.

For that you get 5 hours of battery life, plus the instant on and 30 day standby time.

The MB has 10 hrs of battery life so it is double the amount of time.

Not even. For folks who only wanted limited performance and minimal weight coupled with minimal price .... the new MBA 11" will siphon those folks away.

However, if need to be mobile and working for an 8 hr day.... the new models have problems. They can't go a whole day. Likewise if wanted to use some apps that need some horsepower. There is going to be a difference.

MB sales will drop a bit, but they won't crater. This will make the MBA look like it doing something reasonable in the market since its sales will finally jump higher than the Mac Pro.

And a bezel that is almost bigger than the screen on the 11.6" - looking at the keyboard the machine is still wider than the old 12" PB, which ended when the keyboard did.

I like it how they actually benchmarked games though - surely that's unique for a NetBook as well .

The new Air kills the subset of folks who wanted to buy Apple's version of a "netbook" or ultraportable, but only had $1099 to spend.

iPad is certainly getting many folks who have a lower than $800 budget to spend and limited needs. The new Airs do nothing to dent that. The Air weighs 150-200% that as the iPad. The iPad is still very significantly more lightweight. A gap as approximately as big as between iPad and Air as Air and MB/MBP 13"

Throw on top differences in applications available and they are pretty well segmented markets.

Maybe for you, but for most people, who use an iPad, like the easy portibility and less overhead. The MBA would be nice for some people who need a Full desktop OS, but they are a small minority.

Most iPad users don't need a full blown OS.

I should have said same processor family. I know it is a performance hit, but the people who would be buying a MB would likely not notice a difference. Some would but others wouldn't.

Not sure I get your point about the MBA vs. the Mac Pro. They are even more different than the Air and Mac Book.

My main point which I was not clear in making was that it was more likely to steal sales from the MB than iPad.

As an iPad owner, I would have purchased the Air instead of the iPad had it been this model and I think there are a bunch of people in similar situations.

The iPad is a cool piece of tech but if I had an Air I wouldn't really use the iPad. I can wait until the ulv i7 comes out to jump on an air. I am not a fan of the core 2 duo at this point.

I predict the iPad will Lise some sales because of the new air but it won't be enough to hurt the success of the iPad.

I prefer the iPad, just my preference for things I do.
I would rather spend 1000+ on a power desktop like the iMac and keep the ultra portability of the iPad, for me better exp when mobile, it's lighter, cost less, and able to use it in daily live(lying on couch, walking around home, don't have to have to take\put in a bag, less obtrusive).

Again just does what I need it to do or be, but others may prefer diff.
