My MacBook has never mooed and the fan has always operated fine (kicked in around 70 C). When doing nothing much (like browsing the internet) I average about 60 C.

I'm debating whit myself, should I install the new firmware?

What the...

I installed this a few hours ago, played around for 15mins with the comp since then and let it sleep for an hour or two. Then I come back, open the lid and use the MB for a few minutes - until there's this slight spin up of fans and the whole thing just died.

Startled I press the power button and the MB boots up fine. I start up Console.app to view "WTF" - and it died again.

Now it's the third time around as I'm typing this and currently it seems fairly normal. The system.log said "previous shutdown cause -72", any info on that?

Somehow I wish it would do it again, that would give me more reason to throw this baby (fans keep a constant noise now, wristpad is all stained and seems like I somehow managed to scratch the display with a magazine) into the warranty service. I have this belief that the currently shipping MBs are much more finished products than this one is (ordered a week after announcing).

.. yesterday idled at about 57˚C (which seems to be at the lower end of the MB heat scale).

After the update, it still doesn't whine or moo, and currently the temperature is about 53˚C. Yes, that's cooler, but the ambient temperature is 2-3˚C lower than it was yesterdy.
Update: after an hour sitting idle but on, the MB's temperature is down to 45˚C - a significant drop even with the cooler air temperature.

I only noticed the moo very occasionally before - but last night when it was quiet I definitely noticed the constant fan noise. I guess it's a tradeoff, though - it's nice to see it running a little bit cooler.

I think it's more to be associated with certain batches of machines. I bought mine on release day and haven't had any problems more severe than some low-key mooing. What's the build week on your machine?

Seriously Annoyed!!!!!

I am seriously racked off now. Had my Macbook for a couple of weeks before the moo started. Applied this fix tonight and great the moo stopped!

Just browsing the web and noticed the fans were getting noiser and now with nothing but firefox open the MacBook sounds like its going to take off and CoreDuo Temp says its running at 52c! The fans have been running what sounds like full speed for ages now!!!!!!!!!!!

This is such shoddy QC by Apple. First they release a buggy laptop but now they release a buggy fix. I'm going to ring Apple tomorrow to get this sorted as its mad the laptop worse than before.

Bloody digusting........Shame on you Apple.

I'm 4H621 so that's week 21, right? Machine model "MacBook1,1".

This time again it did it three times in a row after waking up (I guess it's associated to the computer being cold). I'll try zipping and zapping everything later.

Cool but LOUD!

When ever I touch photoshop the fan now spins up very high - very annoying - it used to be silent!

I never had moo, and i put up with high temps (Still wasnt too bad!) - i put small foam feet under the corners and only use on a desk with bluetooth mouse & keyboard so I am fine - I want my silence back!

Anyone know how to return back to original?

My MB didn't moo, but boy did it get hot.

Did the update successfully and my MB remains silent and runs a great deal cooler (40 degrees as I type). A great fix, thanks Apple.

None of the above!

I didn't have the moo. Or whine. Or any other issue. Didn't plan to install the update but caved when it insisted (;)). Nothing changed. At all. I'm not even sure it runs any cooler. If it does then we're talking really small changes. It was running at about 55-65°C with the usual stuff open (Firefox, iTunes, Mail, etc, nothing really heavy) when it was new, and still does.

Used to idle in teh 50's to low 60's for me, now its 40's to 50. Also when running Boinc it would be high 80's low 90's and now its low 80's. Haven't noticed any excessive fan noise and definitely no moo now.

does anyone else get a pop-up that says "your computer does not need this update" even though the firmware is version 1.0.1?

Cmon people. You were angry when the fans mooed, now they don't moo, and you're still angry.... Well I guess that's the nature of man, they always find something to whine about. My first macbook mooed, I returned it and bought a new one which didn't moo, applied the fix anyway and I listened INTENTLY to the fans for a minute and I swear the CPU working in the background is LOUDER than the fan noise for me. The laptop has definitely gotten a lot more cooler and I am averaging a slight increase in speed and better albiet very slightly better battery life.

This is a great fix by apple and they should be commended for it.

The people whose fans are running on high all the time or are stuck or are getting shut downs should get their macbooks checked out for defects because since I applied the fix I have gotten nothing but better everything out of my machine, and like I said the PROCESSOR working is LOUDER than the fans.....

Well I'm not angry at all, but definetly is not a "great fix", maybe it's for u and I'm happy for you but, tell me If i had a bad brand fan before that does too much noise, how the hell it's going to be better if it runs always now?

And yes, it runs about 10 Cº cooler so one problem is fixed but now I need my fan to be changed (hardware fix).

I sort of agree with you on this because the amount of angst compared to the problem seems to get out of hand in Apple's user base. I call it the "Shadows in Paradise" -problem: when everything is a notch up from standard, the small problems become huge annoyances.

Where I do not agree is this case. I believe there are Macbooks that run cooler, such as yours. Mine did have the 'moo' and the update did fix that. Also the my MB runs cooler, most mentionably in the occasionally 'too-hot-to-handle' top left corner. Now though, there's constant fan noise in addition to the soft whine that existed before but was to hard to make out from the mooing.

But back to the reason why I posted: more random shutdowns after waking the machine from sleep, this time with AC in. Need to do the zip zap NVRAM PRAM PMU magic sometime, altough I'm certain this machine will go to the warranty. What annoys me most is that these shutdowns begun immediately after the SMC update.

That's the same with my white Macbook. I can't hear a thing after the update except when I put my ear right up to it. Mine never mooed before the update. It's only a couple weeks old so perhaps they've made some hardware improvements.

The only real change I've noticed since the update is that the laptop is MUCH cooler. Before it felt hotter on the bottom than any PC laptop I've ever owned. After the update, I can actually use it as a LAPtop.

I didn't take a temperature reading before installing it but since the update it hasn't been higher than 46 C. Most of the time it's in the low 40's. Right now it's actually 34 C and I've been using it to surf for a couple hours this morning.

I had a very occasional and very quiet "moo", but what bothered me somewhat about my MacBook was the fact that it got far too warm. After this update, the fan comes on properly and a lot more, something which I don't like from an acoustic point of view, but which is completely justified given the heat these chips give out.

So far the fan has only really come on when I'm running Parallels on my desktop TFT full screen, and then it's been on pretty much constantly, but this really isn't a serious problem. It hasn't come on at all when I'm away from my desk using just OS X, and it's in these circumstances where the quietness is of most importance.

If there was a safe middle ground in between quietness and coolness, I'd grabbed it with both hands, but given how uncomfortably warm my MacBook had become when being heavily taxed, a relatively quiet fan kicking in is a compromise I'm happy to have made.

I'm just angry because it killed my MacBook.

I was installing the updates last night, while doing the firmware one it crashed, I thought crap this is going to cause problems. It went to restart, and it went to restart and it kept trying to restart itself but no, it had retarded itself instead.

No matter what i tried it was stuffed, i tried safe mode, pmu reset thing, the Option command P R. I tried everything. Called up Apple, mind you i just got my macbook back from getting a new logic board due to the random shut down last week after not having it for 2 weeks. The guy was some indian who i had to tell him my phone number 85 times before he could work it out, he asked me had i called before, i said i think i have you on frickin speed dial. Result was: I have to reinstall tiger, good fun. Next thing that goes wrong with this little beast im marching across to the Taj Mahal and telling the hindu gods i want a refund and upgrade to a macbook pro coz its pissing me off. My Quad G5 4gb ram 7800gt 1tb, originally had problems(replaced logic board, ram, graphics and finally the 1st processor, its sweet now, my powerbook 12" 1.5ghz 1.25gb ram is the best computer ever, using it now. I feel it will outlast my macbook, it is bullet proof.

So in answering the thread topic, after the firmware update i have had no mooing whatsoever, which is a relief. hehe lol

I didn't hear any mooing before but figured it would be nicer if my macbook ran cooler.

Idle temp is down to around 45 degrees, which is around 10 degrees less then before. Full fans kick in at about 80 degrees and stay on until cpu usage lowers. As soon as my mac goes idle it reduces back to around 50 degrees in less then a minute.

The fans might be loud when my macbook is under heavy usage but I think I prefer this, I'd rather the fans be on then the laptop run so hot it kills itself.

Didn't have the moo beforehand (or any of the other problems) but I installed it and the computer runs around 5-6 C cooler now then it did before, which is nice because mine already ran cool compared to the stories here in which people complained about the heat.
