It wouldn't really matter to me if it did even in a few years if Apple decides to change their mind and go more multi-platform. I loathe using iOS because of its heavily reliance on iTunes. The handcuffs to Apple's ecosystem is really iTunes.

I stick to the ol' drag and drop. Select all, copy, and then paste to my music, photos, or videos folder. It is actually much faster too. And no need to use SharePod to remove media files on iPhones. Tried iTunes 12 with iOS 8.1.2. I wanted to throw the iPhone 5 against the wall. Luckily I sold it to one of those image conscious/brand motivated women addicted to Clash of Clans. No regrets. I hate iTunes that much.

To me it is really Apple BLOATWARE on PC's. I do have the program on my tablet PC in case I get another hand me down iPhone I want to unlock and then sell it. I need to restore from iTunes in case AT&T approves of the unlock. I have to use iTunes during those times I am forced to use it.
