Just a quote from an old thead:

okay since i upgraded to Tiger, and i have applied all the point upgrades, the audio balance will shift from its normal setting. none of the point upgrades have had any effect on this. its getting annoying having to go into System prefs every now and then to adjust it.

anyone know what causes this? is it shifting the volume (as i suspect?) and does anyone eles experience this? and has anyone found a solution as of yet?

There was on Tiger and I have this on Mavericks. Anyone with Yosemite report this bug?

I'am having trouble understanding what do you mean.

Left audio channel is louder than right and vice versa? If that's the case, I haven't experienced that neither on Mavericks nor on Yosemite.

It happens sometimes that, under audio settings, the balance is not in the middle without a reason.

It is system wide. In System Preferences, the audio balance slide will change itself randomly on occasion. I am affected by this as well

I have had this happen a few times before but I really can't remember the last time it happened. It was a lot of time ago for sure, anyway. I really can't say for sure but I don't think it ever happened on Mavericks with me and I'm an early adopter.

I just switched on my macbook and guess what..

Please, you on Yosemite, check from time to time if this is happening again..

Well, that's bizarre. I have been using macs for a very long time and I have never ever seen audio balance slider changing itself without me doing anything. I think this is an interesting bug and I wonder what triggers it.

Well that's really weird.

Make sure that you don't have any balance adjusting shortcuts enabled in system preferences - keyboard - shortcuts.

I haven't had this happen in yet in Yosemite. I don't know if that means that it has been fixed because it was a very rare occurrence for me in Mavericks.

I'm getting this under Yosemite on a retina iMac. I never had it with previous OS X releases. Maybe we can come up with something to help Apple or a third-party app developer stop this from happening.

If this is happening to you, does your system share anything in common with mine? I'm trying to think of anything that might be touching audio preferences or altering the set of available audio controls.

USB headset with volume control in line - often hot plugged/unplugged

Secondary/external monitor on DisplayPort (Dell 27") with audio support (of interest, audio device is effectively hot plugged/unplugged when monitor enters power saving mode)

PthVolume menu bar extension for changing system volume

Often use VLC, Radium, Skype

Balance shifts to the right after restart

I have this same problem on the MacPro with Yosemite. i reported this to apple.

I have experienced this from Snow Leopard through Yosemite. There are no system-wide shortcuts for changing balance, but every couple weeks I find out the balance is shifted to the left.

Some old support topics mention it happening when plugging/unplugging headphones, or defective cables, but I haven't been able to reproduce it at will.

In Terminal enter the following...

sudo chown -R _coreaudiod:admin /Library/Preferences/Audio

This will fix permissions.

sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force

This will clear and rebuild dyld (dynamic linker)

sudo killall coreaudiod

To restart the audio daemon. The sound should come back instantly and keep working on reboot.

Will try this and report back. Thanks!

I have this happen quite frequently on Mavericks as well - and have never experienced it before; on other OS's. It's very annoying. Especially since I'm a radioproducer and need to have my sound act reliably.

I just posted a question about it on a Danish forum, and it was suggested, that I check out this thread.

Any luck with the Terminal-commands?

Every.....single.....day I have to shift the balance back to the middle. When I'm listening to music with headphones on I can tell when it is off, so I go into the balance screen and fix it. Annoying

I'm on a beta build, no issues here with the drifting balance. I had the issue on the 10.10 initial release but never before that.
