I suddenly have the bug on my iMac. Usually when I log in the balance is off so I created a script to set it back (first to the far left, then to the far right and then center; if I don't do it like this it won't work) and turned the script into a program with Automator so I can add it to my Login items. Took a few reboots to get the timing in my script right but now it works. I'll wait for the 10.10.2 update and see if this fixes the issue.

Yep, now I'm seeing the same issue on my late 2013 Mac Pro with Yosemite 10.10.2. Every time I reboot or sleep the balance will be moved to the far right.

None of the terminal commands above worked either.
Sigh. It's so annoying to have to check it every time I use my computer. I called Apple and they said to contact the speaker manufacture for a driver update. LOL

Same here. Most times it shifts favoring the right channel... yesterday... left. 10.10.2

This is an issue with Skype and Skype claims it to be a "Feature" because they said when using both speakers on the Mac the Microphone picks up feedback. In reality this issue is on older Macs so I don't know why they won't fix the problem...

Try uninstalling Skype from your system to see if it resolves your problem.

It's not skype - I have no skype. I did a clean install of mavericks.

The only thing I did install was a microphone in the headset jack. I sometimes think this is triggering the out of balance issue. But this is definitely a bug in software.

Glad to have found this thread and know that it's not only me. I always felt like the audio was a little off, and then when I put on my headphones, I always felt like it was slightly favoring the left ear and I started wondering if my headphones were faulty. As it turned out, I found in the computer settings that the balance was shifted in that direction. Now it does it again every once in a while and I have to keep fixing it. Annoying!

Shame to see such a longstanding problem is still not fixed! Every time I plug in my headphones it shifts. Such a pain in the...!

This has been happening to me on and off for years on this MBP.

Sound was off to the right, returned to middle, checked this thread, plugged and unplugged headphones, balance was off to the R.

Been trying to reproduce it for a while and can't. It's fairly random but plugging and unplugging headphones definitely triggered it for me.

I let Apple exchange my audio jack. Since then, never happened again...
