Need, but I use the term 'need' loosely... I decided to sell my gaming PC and put that money towards a 2021 16" MBP to replace it. Don't game anymore and wanted to switch to MacOS for my photo/video editing and novel writing.
I'm working on an 8 year old setup right now. I'm not a creative professional, so for efficiency and faster workflow I needed a new setup. A windows laptop could have just as easily worked for my needs or a MBA.
I wanted a Mac because I'm clearly not giving up my iPhone and I do a lot from my phone since COVID hit. The convenience and efficiency I get from my phone and laptop are the biggest things for me. I've always been willing to pay for convenience and things that save me time. That efficiency and convenience is worth every penny to me. Specifically, I wanted a MBP if I was ever gonna get a Mac so I did.
There were many things about my 2016 MBP that were wearing thin on me. It was still capable of serving its purpose but after putting in 5+ years tolerating all the design flaws, my guilt was assuaged enough to get something better.
16" M1 Pro, base model. After considering the upgrade to 32GB RAM, the fact is anything requiring more than 16 GB will be offloaded to the work computer. If it's a business expense, go all out. But this is my baby.
