Since I got MacBook 12 I see no need to use iPad. MacBook is almost as portable and much more versatile to stay productive. Iphone X is for pocketable use.

iPad isn't limited to touch. It has supported for keyboards. So you don't need to be reaching out to touch the screen all day. For types of graphics work, Apple Pencil is an outstanding solution that betters pretty much everything out there. So never say never. I can easily imagine in the near future macOS is retired, and Microsoft is already on the path to retiring Windows as it deemphasises its role within the company.

As I said above, there are already many examples of use cases that are better suited to an iPad than traditional applications like Photoshop and Illustrator. There are some great apps on iPad already that creative people are using to do amazing work. Business people certainly no longer need to be chained to their desks using apps like Outlook 2016, Excel and Word, they can do it all on an iOS device. And there are already filmmakers already using iOS devices for a lot of their workflows. We're already at the stage where there's very little that cannot be done on an iPad that can be done on a computer. Obviously the one area is iOS development ironically but I have no doubt Apple will solve that problem.

People are going to need to come to terms with the reality that desktops and laptops are not long for this world. Microsoft has accepted it and is actively downsizing the teams and efforts around maintaining and enhancing Windows. On the Apple side, there's very little happening with macOS these days. The writing is on the wall.
My Industry across the UK, America, Europe and Asia is 99% Adobe software.. with a few esko bits thrown in.. thousands of design houses through to repro houses through to printers.. the sheer size of an iPad restricts work. If we are to say well connect a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, then maybe be able to plug in a larger monitor.. hang on, isn't that a Mac mini? You are turning an iPad Into a desktop because in its native form an iPad just doesn' cut the mustard. Let's not even mention the file management farce.. If you say iCloud you are blocked my friend!!!! ;-)

A keyboard attachment can be useful in situations where you need to type a lot of text, but never a mouse and I don't see the need for a larger monitor either. It's you who is adding all these other ideas to try and turn iPad into a desktop. It's ok that you can't see the future yet - you are clearly tied to Adobe and don't want to think about what happens when macOS and Windows goes away. I guess you can also hope that Adobe is secretly working on a plan to transition the software you depend upon to the platforms of the future.

The iPad is the transition to other future computer/entertainment devices which will be even lighter/less bulky and non-tethering and be able to utilize budget, business and gaming software and also connect to a widescreen monitor, will also have (iPad does now) external hard drives, keyboards and will do anything a Pc/Mac can do now.

It sounds as if you are unaware how dominant Adobe is in its core markets. These coincidentally are also markets where an iPad as a work tool for professionals is a long way of - mostly because they require more screen estate than other tasks. I for example would not want to lay out a 100+ page print document on an iPad when it’s very easy to get this done on a dedicated workstation with serious software to support me in the process.

You are all in Apple’s marketing bubble and firmly believe that iPads will replace all desktop computers but neither are there enough iPad sales to support the theory that macOS and Windows will go away from being the dominant professional working platforms nor is the core software in place for that transition to happen.

The 12” MacBook sucks. The keyboard isn’t detachable so I’ll never use one.

I voted for option #4 which is for both. HOWEVER, since I started using my iPad it has taken over 95% of everything that I do. I only keep my 13” MacBook Pro to do a few things here and there. I suspect a lot of people are in the same boat. We have in practice switched from being MacBook users to primarily iPad users.

I’ve bought 5 new MacBook Pros since 2012. However, I won’t ever buy another one. They’re too expensive to justify for a how little I use it. I’m done with MacBooks.

I really love my 512Gb 12.9” ipad pro but cant decide if im going to keep it or not. I’m debating returning it for the 256gb to save some cash or returning it entirely and waiting for the inevitable updated model hopefully soon. This device is incredible though and is doing exactly what I it to. It has basically become my electronic lab notebook and reference manager for my phd work and I’ve been finding myself to be more productive while having it. Just cant decide if it’s wortn tne $2000cad that i paid for it with pencil, apple cover, and sd card reader.

You can’t do the type of work we’re talking about with just a keyboard (just like you can’t play certain types of games like FPS with just a keyboard). Video editing, compositing, effects, etc. all need a pointer. You could use a pencil (if Apple allowed it), but again, just like touch input, it requires moving your whole arm, which is a less efficient use of energy than a mouse, which becomes glaringly undesirable when working every day 8-12 hours a day. But on top of that, iOS specifically discourages (maybe prohibits) apps to require a pencil except for the purpose of drawing and writing.

And again, the size limitation remains. Professionals need as much processing power as possible and multiple large displays. The mobility that iPads emphasize is not as relevant to them.

iPads are great for what they are. They have their role, as do Macs/MacBooks. They have different focuses and therefore different inherent strengths and weaknesses. As such, one is not ever going to replace the other completely for everyone.

Just because you want something to happen, doesnt mean it will happen.

I use illustrator, Photoshop, Firefox, excel & word, all at the same time, plus critical desktop file management. Constant connection to a ftp server, plus much much more.. If you think a glorified phone software can handle this, then wow.. just.. wow!!!! The fact that you dont think large multi screen monitor layouts are needed shows How little you know about how true professionals use proper computers.. If I want to send a tweet ill.use iOS, anything else.....

Still have my iPad 3 though I don't use it much since I took the sim and put it in a hotspot. I still use it from time to time but my iPhone has taken a lot of the casual web browsing duties from it. Considering finally upgrading but waiting for the next IPP to see. Not in a rush.
