OK, here's my answer to your question. Note that this is for the USA only. I've no idea how it's done elsewhere.

1. Movies that you rip from DVDs or BluRays will not be available for iTunes in the Cloud streaming on the aTV or Mac/PC. To watch these movies on an aTV2/3, you would have to have them loaded onto a Mac/PC with HomeShare enabled.

2. Movies that you purchase from iTunes will typically be loaded onto your iTunes library on your Mac/PC. Streaming from the Mac/PC to the aTV2/3 will work. Also, some movies are available for streaming via iTunes in the Cloud. I don't know the ratio, but there are many movies on iTunes that are not available via the Cloud.

3. If a movie is available for streaming over the Cloud, I think it's also available for streaming the Digital Copy (obtained through the purchase of a BD or DVD combo pack). Of course the Digital Copy is available to stream via Mac/PC as well.

Perfect. Thank you!

Also, the small print on the back of the BD/Combo box for this movie says that the Digital Copy is in Standard Definition. Maybe that's part of it.

NOTE - the movie in question is Disney's Princess and the Frog BD/DVD/Digital Copy Combo pack.

It's up to the studio who puts it out what they want to distribute with what. Thus, you haven't run into a HD download. As I said, this is the first one I've seen and was surprised it was that way.

What I would do in these cases is ignore the SD version (typically just delete it) and rip my own HD version from the BluRay disc itself. I was planning on doing it in this case, but was excited to see I didn't need to . . . save me a few hours.

Oh I'm fully aware that the particular DC that I have is SD. I'm also aware that True Blood seems to be the first DC to come inHD flavor. I hope that this is a sign of things to come.

My post was mainly to give a few more data points regarding donrsd's post that all of his DC were in HD (via iTunes in the cloud)

put it like this.
all my diwnloaded digital copies that come with blurays are in SD.
thats how itunes downloads them.
well actually, i dont even know if they are SD.....i never watch them on my pc lol
i just uise the downloaded copies to use for the kids iphones or my ipads if im traveling

what i use the digital copies for is to activate the purchase on itunes so now my apple tv can play the same digital copy via icloud onto my apple tv.

when i go to itunes for any of my 90-100 digital copies and go to BUY THE HD VERSION, it is greyed out. itunes considers the digital copy code to be HD.
if i go to itunes and see the HD version of say safe house or even wizard of oz.....if i go to click it like iw ant to buy it....apple tv brings me to my digital copy that is on my apple tv via icloud as it wants me to play the copy. there is NO OPTION to purchase. im not allowed.
yet i CAN buy the sd version :)
thus the streamed version from icloud is in HD.

come to bluray.com
click on forums
look me up, DonRSD
just make sure to put me in as a reference

youll see all ths posts i have. the digital copies you redeem on itunes will be in HD on your apple tv via icloud :)

I'm not doubting you at all. It's just that you're the first person that I've seen that has this experience.

JTStarkiller mentioned that his DC of ToyStory3 was SD as well as all of his others.

My DC of the Princess and the Frog is also in SD. Both in iTunes and on the aTV. I also checked within iTunes and neither the Buy in HD, nor the Buy in SD are greyed out. But I can definitely re-download this movie via the "purchase" tab within iTunes. It downloads every time in SD.

I'm hoping more and more people have your experience. It would certainly make me want to purchase more Combo packs.

So, with your digital copy movies, you are able to navigate to "movies" then purchased movies on your Apple TV2. From there, you select your movie and it plays in HD?

Do you have iTunes match?

I looked this evening, and none of my DC copies were showing in HD.

I would be very interested to get my DC copies to be HD from the cloud.

(BTW: I'm HockeySlasher41 on bluray.com)

Some of the movies for which I have digital copies won't let me buy them in HD, but thet all still play in SD.

Note that the ATV will remain at 1080p with the display, but it is still upscaled SD content.

Only the previously mentioned True Blood is HD from the cloud for me.

This is true for 30 or so films.

i attached some screenshots from my itunes account (on the pc)
look how i curcled the red parts that show the digital copy thats included with my movie shows it as a purchased HD version :)

YES, i navigate to purchased movies and push play. they are in HD.
if i go to the apple tv 2 itunes store and look for say princess and the frog or toy story 3.
they have an HD symbol next to them (for purchase). when i click the HD icon it brings me to purchased movies and the movie i want to buy in HD.
then when i push play, its in HD.
all of my itunes movies are from bluray digital copies.
as i mentioned.....they download to my pc/NAS in sd (i could care less), yet they stream from icloud to my apple tv 2 in HD.

NO.....i do not have itunes match

do your digital copies on your apple tv 2 (via icloud) say in orange letters STANDARD DEFINITION?

and its good to see a fellow bluray.com member wandering around in the e-world lol

Interesting pictures. I just checked iTunes on my work machine (WinXP) and lo and behold, the Buy/Rent HD options on the Princess and the Frog are greyed out. This was not the case on my Mac (actually Hackintosh) at home.

I'll have to check to see what the Macbook says.

In any event, when I access the movie on the aTV2 (via the Purchased section), the movie that streams is indeed in SD. I've compared it to the actual SD digital copy that I've streamed via Home Sharing.

NOTE - in iTunes, there's the blurb that the HD version is available for Mac and Win7 machines with HDCP. Perhaps the HD selections are greyed out if your PC is running XP or Vista. I don't have any Win7 machines.

this is my work pc.
its windows XP.
my home pc is a windows 7 and the items are greyed out as-well.

maybe try re-authorizing your digital copies by entering the codes on itunes again.

my apple 2 digital copies, via icloud, are ALL streamed in hd.

maybe check your general settings on your apple tv too & also check your settings in itunes.

the HD streaming from icloud is the ONLY REASON i remotely care about digital copies.
if the streams were in SD, i would sell every DC that has come with any of my 160 blurays.

I wonder, if your machines are full HDCP compliant? I know my W7 machines are not because the video cards connect to the monitor via DVI not HDMI and DVI doesn't support HDCP. Maybe that's why they are grayed out, you aren't allowed to watch them because you're not fully HDCP compliant.

Well, I guess I won't be streaming my DC in HD...

On iTunes (on my MBP) I navigated to Toy Story 3, Terminator Salvation, Dark Knight, Inception, Despicable Me and others and they all had nothing grayed out.

then why when i go to my apple tv, type in princess & the frog MANUALLY it shows an HD version TO BUY.
i click the HD version and i get no option to buy, apple tv just brings me right back to my purchased items and princess and the frog. all that is there is a PLAY button as if i just picked he movie myself from my purchased section :)

see above and try that.
search for movie you have a digital copy of on your apple tv
find the HD feed & click it
does it bring you back to the movie in your collection or allow you to buy it?

mine brings me to the movie in my collection :)

Best to lay this out with visuals...

I search for a movie that I have the DC for - in this case - Toy Story 3.

As you can see above, the HD logo is present on the right. When I click on it, it brings me to the information page.

The picture doesn't show it - but there is the iCloud logo in the top right.

Now, as you can see, there is no HD logo above the star ratings. It just says Widescreen and stuff about the sound and captioning.

So, THIS is not in HD. As, when I move my selection over to my wishlist, it shows HD under the rating - as if I want to add the HD version to my wishlist. So, that would leave me to believe that I do not have the option to stream in HD...

For comparative sake, I did the same thing with Batman Begins, which I do own the iTunes HD version. I searched for it, and when I clicked on it, it took me back to the iCloud/purchased page, and then under the Play option, the HD showed up.

How you're getting it to work, is beyond me, but my hats off to you.

I'm having the exact same experience as BladesofSteel in regards to my one Digital Copy (The Princess and the Frog - TPATF).

On iTunes, if I access the iTunes Store for TPATF on my WindowsXP machines, the selection for Buy or Rent HD is greyed out. When I access it on my Macbook and Hackintosh, the same selections are available.

On my aTV2, there are three ways to access TPATF.

When I access via HomeShare from my iTunes server, I get SD, which is what I would expect.

When I access via the aTV2 menu (Movies>Purchased), I don't get the option to purchase (also expected). I get three buttons, Play, Wishlist, and More. When I select play, the description reads "widescreen", but if I move it over to Wishlist, I get the HD logo.

The last way to access the movie is through the iTunes Store interface. When I get to TPATF this way, I get the same Play, Wishlist, More buttons and the same widescreen/HD behavior happens.

One thing that I did notice is that from the aTV interface, all three methods to get to the same movie gives me different descriptions. The iTunes method mentions something about 2 deleted scenes.
