Well, the Mac Mini hasn't receive an update this year, so I guess either it's going to have a massive redesign like the Mac Pro or Apple would probably discontinue it.

This may be biased as I never owned a Mac Mini. But I think if you want a desktop you should buy the iMac. Why? It's more powerful GPU, built-in display, keyboard and mouse are included and many more. It's an all-in-one.

The advantage of the Mac Mini I guess is that it's cheap ONLY if you already have a monitor and the peripherals. You can also upgrade yearly without buying a new monitor and such. The small design is a pro for some. Also it's a better server than an iMac.

But there is only few who actually use their Macs as a server (I think) also why would you buy a Mac Mini just to act as a media hub to your TV? There are better solutions, like the Apple TV.

So, in conclusion the iMac has always been the preferred Mac desktop and it only starts at 1299.

Sorry I'm not good at explaining stuff, but I want to discuss this? Any thoughts?

My 30" Monitor with more accurate color than a 30" ACD works well with my Mini. I also would feel weird dragging a 27" iMac over to a friends house to be able to watch movies and shows.

Just wanna send out some love for my mini!!
I hope they never discontinue it (i doubt they will).
Awesome little machine.

I suspect it's possible that the Mac Mini will be redesigned. Perhaps into a smaller cylinder shape to match the Mac Pro?
I see most of the advantages to having the Mac Mini, however unless it sees an overhaul it's basically the equivalent of a low range/browsing machine.
If I ever need a desktop again I'll pick up an iMac for sure, the Mac Mini never even crosses my mind as an option for anything related to power.

A low range / browsing machine that with 8GB RAM and an SSD kicks major ProTools a$$ for very little $$ :)

And that, my friends, is my first macrumors post.

You would probably like the new Asus Chromebox coming next month for $179.

I do believe we have got it all wrong about the Mac Mini future. It is all looking like the MacPro is doing gangbusters, long wait times on delivery means two things...slow production or huge demand. Myself I go for huge demand.
This new form factor is Apple's test of the water for their headless desktop line. So easy to make the same form but ~half the height. Mobile CPU with or without discrete GPU. SODIMM memory allows reduced height. Both mobile CPU and mobile GPU could be accommodated easily.
Going the other direction could allow for dual CPU's.

Discontinue the Mac Mini?

I just bought a mini a few days ago and love it. I have a jailbroken atv2 and it can't touch the capabilities of the mini for media playback.... at least not for my needs. My mini is my HTPC running XBMC, but I also have it running some other services that I want. Its my time machine and will serve up media to the rest of the house as I add some more nodes. I picked up osx server and hope to make use of more of its features as time passes. It's small, quiet, and relatively speaking, pretty powerful. I wouldn't mind having an iMac, but I definitely think IF apple discontinued the mini it would be a mistake. It's a versatile little machine at a decent price.
