...come on people...some people like the beauty of their laptops. They don't like to see dents or scratches on them. I like the beauty of my Air as well. I will be upset to see a dent on it but I might not replace it b/c of a dent. However, I like my car more. I will trade in my car as soon as possible after an accident because I hate re-paint car.

oh noes! one of my marble tiles in my house is cracked! time to call the realtor and put it on the market!

this thread certainly explains a lot to me as to the state of rabid consumerism at it's absolute worst in this country. no wonder our economy is where it is at.

scratched SUV? trade it in and get a new one! the bank will keep giving you loans, no problem! except...not anymore.

what's going to happen when this dude's next car gets nicked at the wal mart and he can't get a loan at all to buy a new one? is he going to go postal?

gosh. this nation of consumerists in a down economy. it might be humorous to watch what happens when a nation of people can't afford their meds as well as that new macbook air to replace their dented one.

could get ugly!

or you could tighten your belt and realize that the functionality of your laptop hasn't changed, and the need to buy another to replace it is foolish. think of it as practice for the next few years ahead of us!

You don't even use your iPhone because there is a better one out? I don't get it.

She must have bought an original iPhone and then bought a 3G after they came out:

Ever since the last 3G update I have gotten FABULOUS battery life. Much better that my 1st Gen. I mean this is really wonderful. Also it is soooo much less "buggy".

You know, this is the phone that should have been sold in the 1st place. It shouldn't have taken all of these fixes...

Ahh, I missed that somehow. I got the impression she wasn't using the first iPhone and didn't buy the 3G one. Of course given what I've seen of her actions, it would have made much more sense to assume she just immediately went out to buy the 3G and left the old one laying around.

Ahh, well.:)

from what i read the OP apparantly had an iphone, gave it to their husband, bought another, and put that in the drawer when the 3G came out and decided to go with that.

that's a good amount of scratch in iphones to put on your mastercard.....

i think of the children in darfur who don't even have ONE iphone. the horror.

Well, that's exactly what I did. You don't like that? Oh well. As far as the Air, my oldest was so happy when he heard that there was a dent! And when the new version comes out, he'll get this one.

If my family can live with it, you can too!

<credit-drunk voice>oh my family can, how do you say "live with it"

we too are ardent believers in the idea that when the going gets rough and the kitty cat pees on the rolls, then throw it into my garage and lock it away, never to be seen again, imperfect ugly shell of a car, tainted by the urine of a cat! nevvvvvvver again, i tell thee! For I am american and I am rich! and I can spend as much money as I want because I have the creeeeeddddddditttttt tooooooo dooooo sooooooo and i MUST keep up with the jones and the smiths. I shall go out and buy two more rolls royces, for the one is a 2008 1/2 and not a true 2009. the horror. </credit-drunk voice>

i bet you son loves the fact that his spend-crazy parents are giving him another piece of barely used tech. it'll be fun when he grows up with an entitlement complex.

This is a kind of person we should try to stay away as far as possible b/c he's just jealous when other people drive new cars, use fancy laptops or have better TVs than him.

Where did I say I trade in my car b/c of a few dents? Also, I don't borrow money to buy a car. If I cannot afford to pay in full, I rather buy a cheaper or a used car. By the way, I drive a 2008 Infiniti G35x.:D

Well, first of all, as I said in my original post that I like to trade in my car as soon as possible after I have an accident. I don't count a few dents or scratches as an accident.

quoted.

don't you think it's completely wasteful to replace a perfectly functional macbook air?

I would think so.

However, the problem is that I'm not sure if it's a complete waste. If her son needs a computer as well, it might not be a bad idea for her to get a new Air.

I like to respect other people decisions b/c it's their money. We can give advices but we shouldn't be bashing them because they don't agree with us. If she's your daughter, you can start bashing her then.;)

Chill... so you're selfish as well. To OP: Just passing it down because of a dent? So if your shoe got a speck of dirt you'd buy another? Electronics is made to be used, not looked at. It has a function, it's not a Picasso down the Louvre museum, although the air does look like a work of art.

Either you're a rich who has loads of money to burn in this tumbling economy, or just have a extremely bad case of OCD. And please don't call me "hun"....

By that reasoning, clothes are also made to be worn so we should all just get the cheapest wal-mart black turtlenecks and jeans possible to make sure we're not naked. Nobody cares about individuality anyways.

Hi All! Thanks for all the discussion, it's amusing!
But seriously, I pass my stuff to my kids and husband because they are very rough with their things. If it can be bent or broken----they bend and break it. It pains me to buy them something and within days (husband included) they have demolished it; skated with it, and accidentally grinded it, or swam with it in the pool, or left it outside in the rain. The iphone I gave him is scratched now beyond belief. He just shrugs... "Use it til you can't recognize it", is their motto.
They are the most active boys I have ever seen! They don't need new, they just need to start off with functional.
My kids are not quite old enough to work, or they would be buying their own stuff.
So, in the mean time--they get my old gadgets. That's the way it works.

PS. Ivan P--- If one of my kids ever told me WTF--GTFO he would be in Foster Care.

better idea

give the mba to a poor college student or a teacher that could no afford a good computer. I know 2 teachers and 1 student teacher that would love a dented air.

I don't think anyone is questioning the hand-me-down setup. They (including me) cannot believe you'd hand down a perfectly good laptop because of one dent.

The hang-up of having perfect and new items all the time is what has gotten society into this mess to begin with (buying bigger and newer houses, using credit cards to get the latest gear, buying the latest car, etc). Maybe you should take a lesson from what you want your husband and kids to learn: "You don't need new; you just need functional."

If your kids cannot take care of stuff, then they shouldn't get new gifts (including hand-me-downs) until they learn to respect what they own. But by the sound of it, they aren't learning that respect from their parents.

As for the comment to Ivan P, you'd seriously put your kids in foster care if they said that? I agree they should not be saying that at all, especially to their parents, but that punishment doesn't fit the crime. Seems like an easy out for the parents who may not want to deal with it.

Oh my. Ivan you stated you are 17. Is that how you talk to YOUR mom when she doesn't agree with you, hun? Then you're right. Discipline is what you need, hun.

Now go outside and play with children your own age.

No, because my mom isn't OCD like you seem to be. She doesn't expect me or my siblings or even my father to take her hand-me-downs, especially over something as minimal as a dent.

Ivan, I address you because you are young. The rest of the posters, I assume are adult. You can't change adults or their opinions. Happily/Sadly, because we are grown. Nevermind about the stupid things we do.

But you are a young'un. I hope that your are well and happy where you are. And that you are given love and encouragement. Because regardless of material things, that's what I feed my kids. I really hope you don't tell anyone that you love, or that loves you to GTFO.

Out of all the opinions stated above, that worried me the most. That you aren't spoken to that way, and that you don't speak that way.

That doesn't happen at my house, no.

Now, I am done because I am going to bed. Good Night All. And good night Ivan.

Thinking about it, it could be attributed to different values and attitudes. I'd be absolutely stunned if I was ever given a $2,500 notebook (that's how much they cost here) from a family member because of a dent. But I guess if your family doesn't mind, then who cares? I can't say I'd give a computer away over it, though like you I do like having things in very good condition, but in the end what other people do with their things doesn't affect me in any way.

I think you miss his point... For me, if my mom/dad wants to give me their MBA because of 1 small dent, I would strongly go against them and say "Hey, mom/dad, the laptop is not damaged... I know we are pretty well off but the money could go towards your retirement or saving up to open our own business or even hey enjoy the money yourselves and buy yourselves some nice dinner for like 10 times with that kind of money"

Like he mentioned, it is probably a different set of values enacted in your house and it's fine with me. I can't make you change your family values but I am just boggled with the fact that you change your iPhone and MBA just because of one scratch/dent.

I love my gadgets and I hate to see them scratched/dented myself but because of this.... I tried to make any precaution like not taking off the plastic that comes with my monitor or install front and back screen protector on my iPhone 3G or purchase sleeve case for my iPhone and Laptop...

However, stuff happens and I have a story to tell: Before I upgrade to iPhone 3G, I dropped my iPhone... I was very upset about this at one point not because it is scratched (dropped on the roadside ><) but because I can't get a better value when selling it before I upgrade to the 3G version... The main reason for me to upgrade is obviously not because it's scratched, rather, the 3G speed which enables me to tether to my laptop and the fact that Northwest Indiana is getting 3G late September... otherwise, I would still be using my old scratched and dented iPhone until now.

When I have kids, I want to show them how to live their life frugally and this is not a bad thing... My parents are pretty well off I should say (thank God for that) but they raised me to save a lot and if possible, do not spend money on something unless necessary... Just like the more information the better, I believe that the more we save our money (in investments or saving accounts), the better :)

By living frugally, doesn't mean you don't enjoy live... Of course you can go to nice dinner or buy the latest gadgets whenever you want but the cost benefit analysis of buying new gadgets must and should about add up... I believe that purchasing a totally new laptop because it's dented slightly does not add up... But hey... it is your money and I can't tell you how to spend it. Just thought I would share my point of view on this one

Just my little tiny $0.02

Cheers :)

Wow! There is certainly some hostility to this thread! Guys, its HER money she can do with it what she pleases. Its no different if your vehicle gets a dent and you run and pay $$$ to get that fixed.

I would say give it as a hand me down, get your self a nice new one when the refresh hits. I'm sure one of your family members will be absolutely thrilled to have your old one. (My family members love my hand-me down electronics. They haven't bought computers in years!...wait...actually ever!)

I have no problem with you handing down your stuff to your kids and husband (it is after all YOUR money) but it appears you have the same problem as them. You too are rough with stuff, which is why you often have them replaced. By the sounds of it, if you kept the items as long as they did, it too would be unrecognizable.

If you want to give your son your MBA (not a bad thing) then do that but don't try to justify the behavior as him being rough when the reason you are giving it away is because you were rough with it first. The apple didn't fall far from the tree in your family. You are all a rough bunch. :D

Just say you like new things and be done with it, who cares what other people say. Is it wasteful? Probably. Is it a crime? No. Overall verdict? Spend, spend, spend away so long as it doesn't get in the way of paying your other bills where we the taxpayers will have to bail you out.

Wow A lot of people need to let the OP do what they want and need to quit extrapolating so much from this. so they want to get rid of it to a family member, it's theirs.

I understand the want of a new one. May not agree with it, by that's my set of standard and more importantly my bank account. People are different.

Lucky family, I would secretly dent your car if I was your son at 16.

Good luck op with the next one.

Man, I have a lot of respect for you. One of the few people in this country who get it. and i assume you're youngish? If i had a son or daughter these are principles i'd be thrilled if they had.

your parents should be extremely proud of you.

and yea, back to the topic. it's not just that it's a hand me down. that's the one thing that is right with this OP. That said, let's face it.

it's like when i used to buy my dad birthday gifts when i was 10--i definitely bought them with an eye towards him giving them to me anyway. Sneaky, got what I wanted, typical of a selfish kid.

I think the OP is selfish. And i think that the OP is justifying her selfishness and her addiction and drunkness on spending and consumerism through the whole "but i gave it away"
