Display for Mac Pro

I'm thinking of getting a Mac Pro soon (not absolutely necessary, but I want a home computer that won't feel geriatric after only 18 months), and one of the luxuries it gives me which I will take advantage of is having a large screen.

I'm looking in the area between 20" and 30", and so the obvious contenders are the Apple 23" and the Dell 24", but both seem to have their fair share of problems, so does anyone have any advice, or any suggestions for alternatives?

I really like Viewsonic. Check out the 23" http://www.viewsonic.com/products/desktopdisplays/lcddisplays/proseries/vp2330wb/

I own an older model, the 20" VP201b. Im really happy with it, have been so for the last two years, despite the minor ghosting I see once in a while. The 16ms refresh rate explains why.

The linked 23" has a 8ms refresh rate so no worries there. My next screen will be a Viewsonic too.

Time to wrap up: Viewsonic!!!
 
I just got a Mac Pro and ordered a Dell 2007WFP.
It was between Dell and Viewsonic. I went with Dell due to the ability to adjust the screen and the screen itself.

I belive screen adjustments are possible on the Viewsonics too. Mine has the capability to do so. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I second the Viewsonic recommendation - they make fantastic screens, and my 20.1" widescreen has been flawless and has an extremely fast refresh rate :)
 
Well I was looking at the VS 2025W (???) and I believe you cannot adjust the position of the screen.
 
if you're not sure about the dells: either the viewsonic screens as a few people mentioned or i am quite impressed wtih the new samsung displays. For instance the 20" widescreen which is about the same price as a 20" wide viewsonic, has around a 5ms response time and good contrast and brightness ratio, LG are also good

I am in the same boat as far as monitors go.

I believe I read on CNet that the screen cannot turn vertical or move up and down. Just for that I will have to go with the Dell.

Which Samsung are you referring to?
 
I'm still not sure - basically what I'd really like is a Dell 2407 that works as advertised, as I like the extra inch over the Apple, as well as the huge variety of inputs and the built in card reader.

Do any other options exist, especially ones where it will be easy to swap if there is a dead pixel?

Go with the S2110W or S2410W.

I have the monitor in my sig and it is amazing. I'm running it at 60% brightness and it still is brighter than any dell, apple or whatever lcd at 100%. Comes with a 5 year warranty!

Ok, I have won mine, but after using it for 8 months I definitely recommend it.
 
I compared the apple and dell and others quite carefully when I was in the market for a monitor and after getting myself totally confused by reading far too much I just went for the dell. They deliver it really fast and they even come to your house and take it away if it develops a fault or if it is DOA.

I love the monitor, it looks good on my desk, its sharp and crisp, no blurriness with watching dvds, it has 2 inputs so I can connect my pc and my mac and it was quite a bit cheaper than any of the other brand name monitors I was looking at. Oh yeah and the tilt and swivel stand is great. The usb ports are powered which is also a big thing.

Just my 2 euro cents... :) Hope that helps your decision.

I know - I do like the displays, especially the design in the black, but they are so very expensive - like nearly twice the price I can get the Dell or Apple for...
 
Apple Cinema Display..they drop dead sexy, and if you buy a 30'' its a good deal. I have a 20'' and love it..worth the extra few hundred over Dell

Worth it, though. I've got the S2110W and it's an incredible piece of kit. Nothing else comes close. Mine will be paired with my Mac Pro (if it ever arrives).

I'll give it some thought - since you're in the UK, do you know either somewhere with decent prices, or even a place where I can check one out in person?

If I can find a decent price (e.g. no more than 800 pounds including edu discount for the 24"), then Giggidy Giggidy!

widescreen isn't letterbox... and there are various ratios.. like 16:9 and 16:10...

so, the answer is yes, but only for media that has the same ratio as the monitor.

Your display has a "wide" screen, and as a result, is called a wide screen display. however, the aspect ratio of a dvd is 16:9, this is much greater then that of your display. Think about it, would you rather have black lines on the screen while playing a dvd, or have the section of your display that has the black bars- gone? then, you'd have less screen real estate for every other task. Its the same reason you'll never see a mainstream 16:9 tv, unless of course, tv networks adopt the 16:9 aspect ratio.

YES!

After you insert your DVD and DVD Player starts up, click the upper menu bar and you'll see "Window"

Scroll down to Video Zoom

To turn on Video Zoom check the small box and then setr your preferences for that movie using the Manual Select button.

Set Wide Display Wide Screen Movie and got to full screen again.

The above will distort the picture, and crop the image...

erm- I hate to say this, but a widescreen monitor would always have a native display resolution with the same aspect ratio. No black bars while you're working. Still, your point is true - I generally like my MBP's 16:10 ratio better than 4:3, but any stretchier and it would be hard to get enough vertical space in to read long websites and the like.

I did not say there would be black bars, I said imagine the black bars you have when your watching a DVD, then imagine the black part of the screen- gone. In order to have a true 16:9 aspect ratio, the height of the display would have to be even less. Thats what I'm saying, and that's what I said- don't correct someone if they aren't wrong.

I got my 21" from here:

Unfortunately, the 24" one is over £1000 including VAT (worth it, though!). The 21" is around £720 or so. No idea about educational discounts - probably not available.

Of course, you could compromise, lost the extra three inches and make do with the 21" version!
