Kinda interesting that the noise showed up around 14-18kHz. That's right around the upper threshold of what humans can hear. For example, I probably wouldn't ever notice the noise since, after many years at shows, I can't hear much above 12 kHz. That's probably why the experience with the problem varies so much from person to person. If you're sensitive to those high frequencies, I'd bet the experience is quite unpleasant. I bet it's probably some DC-DC converter that's being used in the MBP. Although they typically operate at much higher frequencies. Egosphere did the right thing. Wait 'til the Merom-based books come out, and don't be the first to buy one!

Gotta admit, still love my AlBook G4.

Ok, has apple made a bug free laptop in the past 2 yrs? I am wondering. Screen issues, sound issues, heat issues, battery issues? Agghhh.

Interesting, I was at the apple store today and they said they aren't even offering replacements for the whining noise. They said it's from the CPU and that there isn't anything they can do about it. Guess every apple store is different.

Call up your nearest apple store (not a reseller or other store) and tell tem you get the buzzing when running off the battery. I did this and the guy said that they know all about it and to take it into the store and they'll give me a whole new system - and copy my stuff over - with no questions asked. So I'm doing that next Monday.

I found that if I installed the CHUD tools and disabled the 2nd processor the noise went away entirely...

Of course, my MBP died on Tuesday... I was using it at the airport (on battery) and it just turned off. Would not turn back on under battery power. Worked OK if plugged into the wall though.

I returned it to CompUSA today. Planning to upgrade to the dual 2.0, or maybe the 17 if they come in next week.

No matter what these guys say, DON'T be a jackass.

Be polite and nice, but still have an argument. Don't raise your voice, don't curse and don't be rude. If you're friendly to them, they'll be more likely to listen to you and want to "negotiate" with you. Kindly state that you don't want it fixed; it's unacceptable in this condition. Don't say you demand a new replacement MBP, just list all of the problems your current MBP has and if it's a large enough number they'll probably replace it, just because making sure all of those things would be fixed would be a huge hassle for the both of you.

I always get scared reading threads like this. I just ordered a macbook and I sure hope that my macbook won't be driving dogs in the area crazy with its high pitched squeal ;). Trying to live for however many more months with a dell though probably would drive me crazier. I guess time will tell.

Yeah, I've always wondered about that. All of our electronics probably make tons of sounds in frequencies we can't hear. I feel bad for my pets sometimes, because they probably hear buzzing all the time with all the electronics in the house.

*sigh* the processor whine is an Intel issue, so Apple cant exactly fix it can they. This has been mentioned before so many times now.

Replacing it wont do jack. Your best bet is waiting for the next chips in August or whenever they are due. OR if the 17" isnt affected, get one of those.

Just depends on your needs I guess.

So other, non-Apple Core Duo laptops have the whine issue? I thought they didn't. Also, doesn't the MBP not exhibit the whine when running XP? Sounds fishy to me.

I'm still waiting for Apple to fix the whine before I buy a MBP again although would like a MBP now. I just can't stand the whine.

Yes, but I believe the good people at Microsoft fixed it.

They DID have the whine.

I took it home and after some experimentation I was able to use a realtime Fourier transform on the input from the built-in mic to show the noise. There was definately noise around the 14 kHz to 18 kHz range.

Egosphere, that's pretty cool. What was the decibel level of this noise? Just curious.
