If I never would of upgraded to 3.1.2; I would of never had to JB my iPhone; I would of never gotten the randomly dropping 3G signal dropping which has made my 'phone' horribly unreliable and tethering unpredictable, which causes my phone to freeze every now and again and finally leads leads to freezing reboots every other week from which I need to restore since not even blackra1n will boot it, which is on the second or third freeze to constant reboot I brought my release day 3GS to Apple where they gave me a new phone with the new iboot which means now when I JB it I need to do a tethered boot and all the lovely signal lose, unreliability and random reboots started up again (presumably because of the unlock required to do tethering) and I have the new ***** boot rom and a phone I need to restore every other freaken week.

I am one angry man right now.

definitely pros and cons to the JBing. Hope you get it working properly.

same here, I was running unjailbroken 3.0 + tethering quite happy until someone stole my iPhone at the gym

Not that I'm angry though, I did learn a lot of new information this past week

You wanna know the funny thing, I would pay an additional $20 for tethering to AT$T for tethering. This was one of the things I was hoping they would announce today, but I guess I'll have to wait until someone else offers tethering for AT$T to do it (probably June/July).

I have AT&T as well...would tethering come under the iPhone's unlimited data plan? Or would AT&T be able to differentiate tethering with browsing and charge us?

All this to just add tethering?
How about you add the sinful repo thru cydia and install the Internet tethering hack for your model iPhone.

I've read of some issues with the sinful repo. When editing CommCenter, I knew exactly how my phone was being modded. I wanted to SSH into my phone to mod themes anyway, so the only extra work for me was editing the CommCenter file.

Besides, the thread is called "DIY", so that's exactly what I posted. :D

try $55...its going to that or right around it.

and if you guys want easy tethering on 3.1.2, there is no easier way then adding sinfuliphonerepo.com to cydia and installing the tethering hack...done in 20 seconds. have never had a prob

tried out sinfuliphonerepo and it worked for me too.

It's not too late to fix your reliability problems. Here's what you need to do:

1) Uninstall blacksn0w.

Yes, it's that simple. Now that you've presumably got the hacked carrier file on your phone, you no longer need to have blacksn0w installed. All you needed blacksn0w for was to override the signature check when you installed your custom mobileconfig file. Now that it's installed, uninstalling blacksn0w will not affect your tethering. This will solve your problem because it is blacksn0w, not blackra1n, which has caused your instability.

If you had bothered to come here to ask for help before you returned your phone, you could be happily enjoying tethering on your release day phone without any of the problems you describe and without any need to tether. So I hope you're anger is directed at yourself, because you are the one who caused your problems.

Nice try, tethering goes away if you do this. I already did, I tried a number of solutions.

I JB, then install cydia and blacksn0w. I install the custom tethering files, test it, and it works. I then remove blacksn0w, turn on tethering and connect my phone to the computer and tethering option goes away. If you do a search on this forum you'll find people have tried this, even myself. The 3G connectivity issues also does not go away after uninstalling blacksn0w until you do a DFU recovery. Most don't notice it because without tethering they don't use constant data, but if you use Pandora or any other program that streams over 3G you would.

I apologize. I did not realize that it went away when blacksn0w was uninstalled, because I use a CommCenter patch to enable tethering. You should try Egos' comcpatchSigned patch. It patches CommCenter permanently to remove the signature check. You will then be able to install a hacked mobileconfig file without running blacksn0w.
