Gotta be in it to win it
I truly hope that this is true.. The reviews/most videos I've seen of the iPad 2 on iOS 9 show it lagging a lot, especially when you tap and app and it goes black and lags before opening, that would drive me crazy as iOS 8 rarely does that on my iPad 2.
I don't know, when I compare it side by side to an iPad 2 on 8.4.1 iOS 9 is smoother and a lot of effort was spent in safari. Ymmv as with everything Apple.

My Note 3 is going strong, runs perfectly and shows no signs of wear or issues. I'd love to upgrade but I'm not sure I see a need. Again, part of the reason I think Apple leads the way is people like me.....I can't find a reason to upgrade as my 3yr old phone still competes with the new stuff extremely well.
It's a difference between "has " to upgrade and "wants" to upgrade. I "want" to upgrade to the 6s.

Sorry to hear; how do you get warranty service?

I ring Samsung Ireland, which is basically a call centre in the UK. They handle the repair by simply using third party agents in Dublin. They will send a courier in around 3-5 days to collect it (yes 3- 5 days!!!) and then it goes to the dublin repair centre where you have to allow 15 days to repair and then it takes a further few more days to get it back ....

Essentially it's a complete balls !! They offer no 'advanced repair service' like Apple do where you simply have Apple authorise your CC and they send you a new phone, and you send the old one back within 10 days and you are not charged other than a €30 admin charge. I would much rather do that than wait 3 weeks for my device to be ripped apart and glued together by some dodgy repair centre (yes I've read reviews of the repair centre and they are NOT GOOD). :(

I mean were talking about a device that cost €949 euro when released here ....

Like you, I'd be aggravated in a major way to spend all that money and not be a new phone after a warranty claim after 2 weeks.

Well that is certainly good news :p Here I was thinking iOS 9 was the first version of iOS I wouldn't upgrade to.

By the way is this the public or developer beta?

They're essentially same thing. I'm running public beta on my iPad Air 2 and think its great & surprisingly very stable for a beta, only had a couple of apps (games) that wouldn't work properly with IOS 9 public beta.

Been running the beta on both my iPhone 6+ and Air 2 since the last release and both have been more stable than my past experiences using their betas. Of course there have been some occasional minor hiccups but overall, it's been great. I've seen noticeable improvement in battery life, especially on my 6+ (which was already good) and really like the multi screen implementation on the Air 2--can't wait for the official release so third party developers can implement it for their apps.

Ironically I use my latest and greatest smartphone much less than I did 3 years ago, and have far fewer apps.

What I do use more are boring things like playing music, podcasts, camera, Maps etc.

The Galaxy S4 was an amazing piece of hardware, saw a mate of mine on the weekend and he's still using it with no problems.

But my wife's iPhone 6? The battery is already down about 15% since December. Strange.

I think these things can be quite hit and miss - it also depends on how YOU take care of your OWN device!

Yep. You can just have bad luck - hardware can fail, but generally if it doesn't fail and you look after your device there's no reason why a flagship today couldn't last 3,4 years ... :)

Hardware does indeed fail. I also think warranty service varies depending on location. I know here in the US when I have had hardware issues I can take my phones to a carrier store and have a warranty replacement in a few minutes. Same with Apple hardware...there are several stores close to me. In past experiences...Apple customer service has been top notch.

Yikes, that sucks. Imagine if that was your only device? You have to spend even more to get a replacement to use in the meantime.

Yeah, that's been my experience too. At&t has always taken care of my warrantee work, though there was one time with my M7 where the camera had purple blobs but at&t didn't have any replacements as the phone was only a month old, so they had me call HTC who gave me a similar time frame as MRU for repair. I ended up just dealing with it for a couple of months and then swapped when at&t had replacements in Stock.

Oh, though it seems apple is no longer doing white box replacements. I had a defective screen with my iPhone 6 and this past weekend went to the Apple store to get it replaced. The genius took the phone to the back and replaced the screen but I had to leave and come back because I had not planned on having to wait over an hour and had other appointments. Now waiting an hour is still infinitely better than being without a phone for a month, but it's no longer a 10 minute swap.

Yeah I tried playing that card to see if that would speed it up, but sadly to no avail.

Like you say if you didn't have other devices and needed specifically a smartphone you'd have no other choice but to either buy another cheaper device or the same device again, either way it's more expense.

What's ironic from my perspective is my black saphhire model I had, had no problems but I traded it in to buy this Gold version agh.

They are pretty much the same, however the public beta means doing an OTA update, but the developer preview allows you to do a clean install, or an iTunes install. I'm convinced that most people who have had a good iOS 9 iPad 2 experience have the DP where as those who have poor experiences usually have the public beta.

My Galaxy S2 is still going, has the original battery and all, running just fine. Got it back in 2011, lol. It actually looks better than most 1yearold phones these days.

WRT Vulnerability, it still gets Google Play Services Updates, as most Androids do on Android 4.0 and up.

unfortunately google play services can not fix all vulnerabilities, like stagefright :(

'very' old android devices probably 'last' longer because android developers support older versions of android for much much longer than iOS developers do (i think this is actually forced by apple?). The main con for android is security patches (that cannote be addressed via GPS) on old devices

I'd love to be the guy that keeps stuff till it breaks. Sadly i rarely keep stuff long enough for the warranty to expire.

i use to... but now were well trained by the tech companies with the newer! faster! shiny! must buy one! approach.

First laptop died. Can't say i've had anything break since. Sorry to hear about your news MRU! The rest has been upgrades/changes for the sake of it. I'm trying to break the cycle tho.

Apart from some early laptops, these being single core laptops (i only started in 07 but have made up for it) nothing i've had has gotten slow. Ok i bought an iPhone 4S at the start of the year before i got a 6+. The 4S was already slow but not too bad.

It's how you look after them but even that for any device doesn't guarantee it to last.

iPad? I use to charge once a week! Owned iPad 2/mini/retina mini/Air. 64bit should outlast the old for speed and keeping the updates coming for longer.

Owned Nexus 7 2012/13 none of the issues i read about.

Owned Mac Pro Classic/Air/2014 Pro. No issues at all. No staingate, crashes etc. Zero problems.

Android handsets. Too many to list but no issues and all sold on.

iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S, 5 and 6+. No problems.

I wont list the pre smartphones but again... no problems.

All apart from signature gone in working order. Luck? Or looking after them? :)

Yeah, I've been the same. Though I think after the 6S comes I might be able to break the cycle. My note 5 I can see easily lasting at least a year if not 2 before feeling like it's not top of the line, and an iPhone with 2gb ram should also last for quite a while. And if at&t gets rid of 2 year contract pricing, then all the more reason to keep these handsets longer.

If you handle your phone with care, every phone lasts. If not, you're doing it wrong. It's really that simple. Over the last 20 years, none of my phones had any defects at all.

Are you saying there's no such thing as a defective unit, and any hardware or software faults are caused by user error(??)

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
My 2 month old S6 Edge 64gb that has been babied just died :( The fancier they are built, the quicker they fail :( I now this unlikely to be indicative of the whole, but probably not the best time to answer this thread :(

No way.. That sucks, well at least you have a nice Note 5 and other devices to use in the meantime but still it sucks.

Hope you can get it fixed.

Going to throw in a status i just read from a friend...

Replacing a half power battery in one Samsung Galaxy Note. 5 years! Going to replace it with a note 8.

That, my friends is an android that has lasted and still going strong.

I would love that discipline if you read my above post.
