iPad Pro Do I apply a Tempered Glass on the iPad Screen or Not ?

Hi Guys,

So i am in a fix about something and i am hoping some.of you guys will help me clear my dilemma. I am in two minds on should i apply a Tempered Glass on my iPad Pro or not ? I have the 11" inch iPad Pro. I come from a school of thought of not applying anything on the iPad Screen, For me it just takes away the real feeling of using the iPad and the iPad experience. I have had an iPad Air before. And i followed the same philosophy and did not apply anything on it. It served me well. I was worried about getting scratches on it but it did not get as many as i thought it would and and only in latter stages it got two or three hairline scratches that's about it. So right now i am in a dilemma should i apply a Tempered Glass on the 11" inch iPad Pro. so far what I had decided and what I thought about this, firstly I have a Smart Apple Cover that I use along with it. And according to me the only possibility of getting any scratches or finger prints marks on the iPad screen is while typing on the iPad screen for which i have already purchased a Bluetooth External keyboard. So what do you guys reckon should I apply a Tempered Glass ? Do i really need it ? Like I said is if I have to type extensively I've already purchased external bluetooth keyboard and if I have to type couple of lines I can use the swype keyboard on the iPad which just works great. The only reason i was thinking about applying a Tempered glass on it is to prevent it from scratches. But I also realize applying a temepered glass is just that peace of mind !! you type on your iPad screen, or dance on it no difference at all. Peace of Mind once and for all. But I am kind of also not sure about how am I gonna feel and like it or not ? What do you guys suggest ?

I put one on my 12.9 Pro because I find it it easier to clean, not for any protection purposes. It doesn't detract from the iPad experience in the least for me. Personal preference, no universal right answer to this. If you put it on and it bugs you, take it off - pretty straightforward.

Apple products feel better without glass but they do scratch fairly easy so its necessary if you worry about that.

Personally, I use glass but dont know why. I have AppleCare+ already so it shouldn’t matter but I guess I worry about resale value.

What you are talking about is doing an experiment. When you say first apply and see if you like it or else remove it. In doing so, Will it not leave any residue? The residual glue which does not go then ?

No residue, no damage to the iPad. I've done this a couple of times with different iPads over the years. The screen protector won't be reusable but at least you'll know how you feel about it.

I have been an iPad user since the very first model, and use mine for both work and home, meaning it travels around regularly.

I always have a decent case, but I have never put a screen protector on any of my iPads. Never had a scratch on any of them, personally.

I’ve used Anker, Zagg, and JETech - all equally good.

Do what you want--but it is totally unneeded. I do art with the pencil everyday and have noticed
no scratching. Also, matte screen protectors do not create a 'paper feel'. Its all hype. Using
the ipad for art means drawing on glass. Once your used to it, it's a nonissue

Tempered glass from Anker definitely won't leave any residue.

It's all personal preference imho. I have a matte screen protector which I use for protection from hairline scratches which may be caused my the Apple Pencil, but also for the feel of it. Honestly it doesn't really make a big difference to me. Flip a coin and if it lands on heads plan to buy the protector, and if tails, plan not to. Then think about how you feel after the coin has landed. Whichever one you are most happy with, go with that.

I installed a screen protector on the iPad I use most often with Apple Pencil. I hate the feel of writing on a display with fingerprint haze or dust.

I tried using a paperlike/matte screen protector. The tooth/friction does make it feel close to writing on paper but couldn’t stand the rainbow effect so switched to tempered glass. Thus far, the tempered glass screen protector appears to have a more effective oleophobic coating compared to the iPad’s display and I don’t have to worry about dirt particles getting dragged across and scratching the screen when I write.

Yes, I agree, even I have kind of the same philosophy not to apply anything on the iPad Screen, Just use it with caution and use an Apple Smart Cover. But having said this, it is just that sometimes it makes me feel, If you have the tempered glass put on the screen, you can just breathe a sigh of relief, no tension at all. Peace of mind. Thinking now no force in this world can do anything to your iPad Screen, as you have a strong protection.

More seriously, the only time I managed to smash an iPhone screen it did have a screen protector, but that didn’t help! (I caught my phone between my chair and desk, and the pressure on a point cracked the screen)

exactly that is what also driving my thought process that after applying a tempered glass I don’t have to worry about anything at all but I am just that not so keen to apply it.

my friend in that scenario you are talking about brute force I’m not saying that it after applying the tempered glass on the iPad screen it will make it invincible, of course it can break.

I've had a glass on almost every iPad I've owned, and I put them on all my grandkids' iPads. It gives me peace of mind. I've only had one screen crack underneath a screen protector and that's when my young grandson stood directly on the glass.

On my pro though, and on the 6th gen I'm using now, I put the iCarez matte (paper-like) screen cover. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but I love it, and it makes using a pencil really feel more like you're writing on paper.

The only reason i was thinking about applying a Tempered glass on it is to prevent it from scratches.

iPad Glass is optical quality and difficult to scratch. Typically more difficult to scratch than the tempered glass, with the additional anti reflectivity and oleophopic characteristics that will no longer be in effect under a tempered glass.

What do you guys suggest ?

I have a Spigen on my 12.9. Initially I thought it would protect it from scratches but instead I was surprised that it kept fingerprints and the oil from my fingers off. It's not 100% but a big difference compared to all my coworkers who have iPad Pro's. They're cleaning their screens every day but I clean mine maybe once a week. Best $10 I spent.

The tempered glass is not for scratch-avoidance, but for impact resistance. The fine scratches in iPhone/iPad screens are usually in the oleophobic coating, not the glass itself. Since screen protectors also need an oleophobic coating, it seems reasonable to assume that there will still be fine scratches in that, too.

Considering how many broken iPhone and iPad screens I've seen where the screen protector failed to protect the screen...

I've yet to break a screen on any of my iPhones and iPads (I broke the screen of a 55" TV, but that's another story) - to some degree that's purely a matter of luck, to some degree it may be due to my personal habits. In the case of my iPads it may be partly due to using folio-style cases.

I don't worry about resale value for any of my personal electronics. I plan to use them, not preserve them. If there's some value left at the time I replace them, that's a side benefit. If I don't think I'll get my full money's worth I won't buy it in the first place.

In the end, we all do what makes us comfortable. I'm comfortable living without screen protectors, but I do buy AppleCare, since accidents do happen.

That’s an interesting angle that I hadn’t considered. The latest iPads have fantastic anti-glare qualities which make using them outside in bright conditions perfectly viable. Earlier iPads were very hard to use outdoors.

I’m not sure how much a second layer of glass would impact that, if at all?
