Im on iOS 12.1.3

everything is working ok.

Do I really need to upgrade to 13? I really don't want to get involved
with fixing broken apps and updating stuff any more than I have to.

Same for my laptop...Im on early Mojave...do I need the Catalina OS that bad
or can I just chug along the way I am?

what says the forum?

No you don’t “need” iOS 13, and you also don’t need to ask others if you need iOS 13, perhaps ask your parents, most of the rest of us can make up our own minds.
Perhaps when iOS 13 is released to the public you could and probably will ask again if you really need iOS 13, I’m sure there will be lots of people saying do it, and also lots saying don’t.
On the off chance you have a brain, why don’t you decide for yourself, like the rest of us?

The latest updates contain very important security updates amongst other improvements & features. Apple really needs to make updates mandatory...

Why? iOS 13 is good, does not mean Apple will not pump out other iOS 7 or iOS 9 or iOS 11 crap. Why should Apple force me update to newest version that maybe slow down my devices or maybe make my app not working with new update? Or I choose stay in same version because I want to jailbreak?

This.

For me right now, iOS 13 is worst than iOS 12.4. I rely a lot on smart invert colours accessibility feature and right now its broken in iOS 13 so I'll not update until its truly fixed. Almost every new major OS update is slower than previous versions until a couple of post release updates. iOS 12 is polished to the max right now, I simply don't want to be forced to update to a version that feel like a downgrade for me.

Based on your post, surely you know that you don't need iOS 13 or Catalina? Very few people except developers who are updating or creating apps for iOS 13 and Catalina "need" the beta software.

Wait until .3 at least before jumping to a new OS. That usually means waiting until spring.
But if you enjoy the endless merry go round of incremental updates that fixes some bugs but introduces others, go at it and download 13.0 and have fun.

Waiting a bit is my usual approach. Sometimes I put the new iOS on a spare iPhone used as a WiFi device, just to get a leg up on new features as an option and not some kind of mental challenge. I tend not to enjoy surprises on my active iPhone behind one cuppa coffee and a net connection first thing in the morning...

I was surprised though today to see that even The New Yorker is weighing in on iOS 13... ran into this tweet and it piqued my interest enough to fish out the article.

The New Yorker cops to owning some iPhones? Wow.jpg

I know they've advanced way past using quill pens over there at The New Yorker, but didn't realize they were writing tech reviews lol. Sounded like someone had an issue with battery life... and maybe with emojis. But by then I realized I was in the humor section, a parody on Apple releases of iOS 13 fixes:

"iOS 13.0.1: This update includes dozens of new emojis you don’t need, like multiple types of floppy disks and a tiny sandwich composed of two saltines with French’s mustard in between. It does NOT include the one emoji you actually could use (a tampon)."

Yes, without the latest software and security patches you're putting yourself at unnecessary risk online.

They must be mad because Apple cancelled their SJW tv show...

Honestly though, no sympathy for journalists with crappy, scaremongering trash like that which people will grab and run with!

Right, especially when one can hang out in MacRumors forums and round of plenty of far less humorous and often quite baseless pokes at Apple and without even paying for a subscription. :D

If you're just looking for bare essentials, iOS 12.4 will give you both security updates and Apple Card compatibility, if you're interested in that sort of thing.

I know it's buggy, but I just love iOS 13 though. All the new features are weighing out over the instability. Plus, I use Spark over the iOS Mail app, so I've been lucky there ;)

That’s just silly. If I buy a product, I should always have the option of keeping that product functioning in the exact same manner it did when I originally agreed to purchase it.
Forced changes to the software which is integral to the consumer’s experience of the device they purchased would probably end up being challenged under consumer law and I couldn’t see Apple or any other company winning in that case. Many updates can fundamentally change the way parts of the OS function. For some users, this can be make or break in terms of using the software or not (eg: enterprise users who require very specific functionality in order for Apple devices to be viably or realistically used in their business environment).
I think even the failed AirPower was heading in a risky direction in this regard, as AirPower was used as a selling point in advertising for AirPods and iPhones and when this wasn’t delivered upon, without the necessary caveats clearly displayed in the advertising that the final offering is subject to change, this could land any company in trouble with the law. I think the same applies to software.
