Do I need to get these 2 files to ever jailbreak again? So when 3.1 comes out, you can't get these 2 files back or something? I want to jailbreak with Cydia/purplerain right now, but I figured that I might as well wait for for 3.1 since it'll be out soon. What should I do? Wait for 3.1 and then jailbreak, do what this website says, or go ahead and jailbreak and don't worry about what this website tells me?

Get those two files now. They're essential if you want to jailbreak your 3GS in the future.
For now, they're not needed, but they'll be quite valuable in the future.

Agreed. Just get them and keep 'em whether you need them or not. Apple is always after these files.

Take the hour and follow the iclarified instructions on obtaining the two files and then jailbreaking.
When 3.1 comes out you have a couple of choices.
1. leave teh phone jailbroken under 3.0 and wait until the jailbreak for 3.1 is available. (my recommnedation)
2. Jail break know then when 3.1 comes out
a. unhide any icons that you may have placed in sbsettings or in a category folder
b. download and install 3.1. You can perform a set up as a new phone and then install 3.1.

my thining is why wait to jailbreak, jailbreak and experiment with what jailbreak has to offer. Worry about 3.1 later

I just remembered that I had ordered a MBP and it's coming in 2 weeks and I intend to use that as the computer to sync my 3GS with. What do I have now then? There are totally different programs that I have to use. But I will use Windows 7 in the future, but that comes October 22nd, and I could always get the RC build and back up those two files later when I overwrite the RC with Windows 7, but yea what do I do if I'm getting a MBP?

Wait, i don't get why these two files are needed if tons of people are not doing this. What exactly does this do?

I am trying to get those files by following the guide but when I download the ips restore firmware, I get a zip file with a bunch of DMG files and it ask for a pw. do you guys know it?

meh, I don't think we are going to need them. Someone will find a way through. Always.

I think the files are to restore not jailbreak. your right on someone always getting through, but the files might be needed to restore the phone from a jailbreak or if something messes up. Every time you restore these files are sent to apples servers to "ok" the restore and if their different (JB) you might not be able to restore.

if the people who are doing this say it may be good to keep the 2 files, then do it. you'll kick yourself if for some reason you need them one day and couldnt take an hour to save them.

i did it just to be safe. now i dont need to worry

Are these two files the same whether you do them on a MAC or Windows? As in I can just transfer these two to my MAC (arrives in 2 weeks from apple) via a portable external harddrive?

EDIT: I just did this, one file is 16.8 MB and it starts with a #, and the other is 273 MB and it starts with a letter (the Per.tmp files). Does this sound right? I tried to restore it again and then the .tmp files came out to be different! I'm not sure if I got the right files.

Dang it, I only got the iBEC file via the DFU method, I didn't get the iBSS file. Are these two files always the same for an individual phone no matter how many times you restore it, and different for each iPhone out there?

Yes, they are the same.

If all you got was iBEC, you weren't in DFU mode. You were probably in recovery mode...

No, I was in DFU mode, I just wasn't quick enough and didn't know exactly what I was doing. How come both the iBEC and iBSS files are in the same folder, and you need to get 2 folders? For me, my iBEC is in the folder that starts with a # instead of a letter, is that the same for you? This sucks though my iPhone is taking 30-40 minutes to finish restoring and after that I have to do the whole process over again, and if I miss it again, another 40 minutes gone!

Yea it took me 2 hrs to do it. You need the first folder that pops up its only there for about 3 seconds. I heard if you dont grab the file all you have to do is disconnect the usb from the phone that way you dont have to go through the restore process.

Just get the iBEC_iBSS_Grabber... its a tool that will just automatically grab the folders for you.

And no you don't need to do it twice, you can just do it all once from DFU mode and get both files.

Everytime I do this, I only get the iBEC file, as in the first file that you are talking about that pops up only contains the iBEC. There's one file that is 16.8 MB, the first file that is extracted, and then the next one is 273 MB. Is the one with 16.8 the one with both files, or do you have to get the one with 273 in the same folder of the 16.8 MB folder in order for both to appear?

Same here, I was able to find all other firmwares, but the one for the 3Gs I can't find nowhere. I keep getting a zip file. Do all the right file show with that little block beside them?

Rename it .ipsw. I believe Firefox adds the .zip extension on Windows machines. :)

I check the file ext. it does have .ipsw on it. Every time I download it I get a file with 7 files in it. 3 have ext .dmg, buildmanifest.plist restore.plist kernelcache.releaseand one folder named fimeware. When I open that folder it had more file one dfu and all flash. The name of the file is iphone2,1_3.0_7A341_restore.ipsw

Exactly. Remove the .zip and you are fine. Don't extract an files from the .ipsw file. :)
