Well, there is worse, I have 7 ipads (4 pros, 3 minis), 2 (old) android tablets, 4 windows tablets/detachables (well technically 6, but 2 are so old and half broken that are not used anymore...) and a windows convertible...
Lol, I have 8 Android and 4 Windows tablets from the time I was trying to find a replacement for the iPad. After I wasted so much money trying to find iPad alternatives, I eventually figured it's cheaper for me to just pay Apple's storage tax.

Apart from those, got a couple of HP TouchPads I bought on fire sale to play with. Before the iPad was announced, I also had 1 Windows UMPC tablet (overheats after 1 hr) and 1 Windows convertible (heavy, 3-4 hr battery life).

I found it best to move away from macOS, the consistency between my iPhone Pro and iPad Pro is just too valuable for me. Are the tasks you use it for simply impossible on the iPad? I kept a Mac around for a while just for server management, but have been able to do everything using iPadOS now. If you feel like you really need to not have 3 devices (I get it) and you must have a Mac, then ditch the iPad, but I think keeping around a macOS device for a couple tasks is overkill. Up to the individual though.

Yeah the main thing I need the Mac for is making photo books, and there just isn’t anything I’ve found that lets you truly customize photo books made for iPadOS.

Plus, I have the ability to do some of my work from home for my p/t job, and I just can’t use the full versions of the software on iPadOS.

An update. I dropped my daughter off at an appointment the other day, and she accidentally took my phone in with her. There was no way I could get it back, and I had her kids, so she needed to be able to contact me when she was finished. She was able to face time us on their iPads from my phone, but wasn’t gonna be able to update me that way once the appointment was underway.

I drove home, got my iPad, and was able to keep in touch with her via text until we needed to go back and pick her up.

I know this was a fluke incident, but it did make me realize that I probably depend on my iPad a lot more than I realize, and this is probably an area I’m not gonna minimize.

Interesting. My first tablet was a crappy Android 7in sub $90 tablet in 2012 (sold in the mean time). Another one was an Asus transformer Android that fortunately broke within warranty ans was refunded. The one I still have was a pretty good ipad mini competitor in 2013, the galaxy note 8 (yes, that's why the phone is called note8, and not note 8, because there was a note 8 tablet back then...), one of the very first tablet with LTE. Great device but not great battery life which degraded to unusable levels over time... Replaced by a mini 2 first and mini 4 after (now mini 5). And my last Android (I don't think I'll ever buy one again...) was the only one I occasionally still use, a Lenovo Yoga 2 pro, a 13.3in tablet with a 2k screen an integrated projector. I mainly use it for the projector and as portable tv, but it's too slow for anything else... Once I gave up on android I have been using both surface style devices and ipads, but I have progressively moved to ipads, including as an on the go device, and use the surface devices only occasionally. I also bought a UMPC 2-3 years ago (GPD pocket) but battery died after just 1 year...

That's right. I think we talked about this before, regarding the photo books. I feel like there has to be an alternative, but you would know better than me. Below is a link with some suggestions, I have heard you can do it on Google Photos also. Good luck.

Yeah, I have the 10.5 & 2018 12.9 Pro's and 6 Android tablets (unused these days except for occasionally pulling out the 8" Galaxy Tab S2).

I haven’t found a viable one where I can actually customize the books how I want them.

Yep, it's those instances where you're really glad to have an extra mobile device with its own internet.

There's an internet outage in my area since last night. Makes me happy to have LTE on my iPad.

Yeah my wifi has been down today due to weather, and my power has been out - definitely nice to have the iPad. It also makes me not second-guess my decision to keep it!

Nice.
The mini is the most comforting iPad, imo.

Agreed the mini is the best for on the go and for bedtime usage for sure...
I think it’s the best one overall. Even the air or standard model is too big, it yields too uncomfortable for my hands over a short duration of time...and my hands are decently sized too.

Every time I've thought I could live without an iPad I kept going back to it - but mostly because I find reading on them to be the best way to do my reading (I read a lot). I've never been able to go without an iPad for that reason. The portability, amount of text on the screen vs my 11 Pro Max, and the battery life make it a must for me. It is my most used device outside of work.

I often have a bluetooth keyboard hooked up to my iPad (on a stand) and use it as I would a laptop. (Day One, talking with family, posting here on Macrumors, taking notes, I use the pencil a lot with OneNote (work) and Notability (personal)).

That said, I too want to badly reduce the number of devices that I have. Every time I've attempted to do this, I end up going back and getting X device again (X = desktop or iPad). There are use cases for both and not having one or the other can result in even worse problems than having all the devices and feeling like you need to slim down. :p

This sounds exactly like me. Both in the desire to pare down and the futility of that exercise. 😂

I also use the iPad for reading and much prefer it to something like a Kindle, which I've never really been able to get used to. I also take notes alongside whatever it is I read, which is just not possible on a Kindle with its super laggy touchscreen tech. My iPad also gets used for work stuff in a pinch, although I still need a full blown laptop for that.

And finally, I just *enjoy* using my iPad. It's a terrific machine. I could accomplish everything I want to do on either a laptop or an iPhone, but I'll often times prefer the iPad. That in itself is enough to convince me that it's a keeper.

The time I realized that my iPad Pro was indispensable was when I was without electricity for 3 days and it was the only device in the house (other than my iPhone) with LTE. My Apple Watch has LTE for the times I leave the house forgetting my phone.

Just curious, couldn’t you have hotspotted during the outtage?
And you pay $10/mo only for the case that you forget your phone? Or are there other uses too?

You'd be running down the phone battery though. In cases of power outage, we tend to conserve phone batteries for essential communications only.

Then depending on iPad battery life, it could be used for entertainment then later reserved for news as the charge on the iPads (and power banks) go down.

Consider it as insurance. Albeit for me, the LTE iPad serves that function as well. I'm more likely to forget both phone and watch than iPad.

I keep the T-Mobile 5GB for 150 days for $10 plan for my LTE 10.5 Pro for those times when I'm out and about with it and want connectivity. I could use a hotspot off my phone but this is quicker/easier and usually has better bandwidth. Plus, it's a different carrier than my phone in case one has better reception than the other.

I could not agree more. I don't have an AW, but otherwise, my list would be the same. Also, I can do 80-90% of my personal computing on the iPad. Every 6 months or so, I get sucked into the iPad only mindset, and I set my MBA aside and try to prove to myself that it will work. iPadOS inspired me to take another whack at the iPad only follies. Then, I open a large spreadsheet and agonize over the thing for hours as I try to cram a square peg into a round hole.

Inevitably, I realize that I can live without the iPad but I can't live without my MacBook Air. I keep repeating the same cycle. I am like a lab rat that keeps shocking itself. Truly, it is amazing.

Now, my wife is completely devoid of concern about this stuff. She never gets sucked into it. She just uses the iPad for light productivity/consumption and uses her desktop Mac for heavy lifting. That's it. Pure bliss. She is not a techie......just does what works.

BTW - I have not doubt that there are folks that can be effective going iPad only. It just doesn't work for me.

Have never hotspotted so wouldn’t have been a good time to figure it out. I use the watch for communication when convenient such as quick responses to texts in the car or on calls while walking my dog. I live
alone and at my age it’s not a bad idea to have for safety.

True. I remember paying around $30 per month for my grandmother's Life Alert and one issue was she didn't always wear it.

My perfect setup for me is my:
iMac 27" 5K 2015 in my home office. Don't like laptops.
iPad 11" 64gb 4G (tried a mini couldn't stand the red/majenta screen, no pro motion and home button with old TID.
11 Pro for calls/messages,camera etc

I did sell my S4 apple watch, just became to nerdy for me seeing every other tom dick and harry with one, scratches to easy too on the wrist.
Just use my seiko divers and ripcul for surfing now.

And my bose 700, hate all apples ear/air pods, pro's too.

Thanks for the feedback. There are definitely some good reasons to have multiple data subscriptions, such as safety or even just convenience. I’m personally a stickler for cutting out excess expenses, especially subscriptions, so I’m always looking for the most cost-efficient solutions to problems. I almost always have wi-fi for my iPad, so for me occasionally hotspotting from my phone is definitely the way to go. (It’s suuuper easy, by the way, assuming you have that option in your data plan. Just the press of a button.)

As far as power outages—those don’t (at least shouldn’t) occur too frequently, so I believe hotspot is an acceptable solution to that problem. Hotspot does use up the phone’s battery a bit quicker, but I keep a stock of alkaline batteries at home, and I’m planning on getting one of these replaceable battery power banks [https://www.amazon.com/Authentic-M4-Portable-Battery-Flexible/dp/B076JJFMBM?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_2] for just such occasions. [edit- that power bank may not be the right one actually, not sure if it takes regular alkaline or something special]

As for the Apple Watch, I bought the cellular version because it was on sale and I thought I might want to add data later on. I haven’t yet as I don’t really need the data currently, but that might change in the near future when I start to do more running and want to go without my phone.

Again, that’s me. It’s apparent everyone’s situation is different.

That seems like a pretty good deal! I wish prepaid data didn’t expire, but 150 days is a decent amount of time.

Well, I think my order would be something like this if I based it solely on amount of use, and not actual need:

Apple watch
iMac (although honestly, between the iMac and watch, either could go first)
iPad

The phone has the ability, albeit in a tiny form, of doing just about everything the other devices can do, AND it’s my phone. I’d definitely have to get a Max version if it was my only device though. Always looking for a reason to buy another Apple product... ;-p

I can use my phone as a hotspot if I get in a bind, and I think my ATT plan gives me 10-15 gb/month per device for hotspot usage.

For me though, with regards to power outages and such, we live in a rural area, and already struggle with good internet options as well as decent LTE data options. ATT used to be the best out here, but now they pretty much suck. The problem is, Verizon isn’t much better, and since I’ve been with ATT for 30+ years overall (got my first cell phone back when Cellular One was a thing, then it became Cingular, and now ATT), I just haven’t made the switch.

Anyway, I keep all LTE devices because it just gives me options when we have power outages that affect our internet. Our generators will run everything, but if the weather is bad enough for an outage, typically our satellite isn’t working. I can keep my phone/iPad charged and have connectivity through those, which is always nice.

Living in the boonies = spending LOTS of extra money for half-ass internet.

I echo the same view.

Regardless of the order I choose, I think Apple Watch, iMac or iPad.. all could go in any order. But the iPhone.. would be the last to go due to the many functionalities it provides.
