well, regardless if you want extended service, then you will have to buy applecare anyway. Waiting till the end of year 1 wont give you more time (unless its hardware support you're looking for). You'll just be out of phone service for the remainder of the year until you re-register.

Who gives a damn about phone support?

Bottom line is I'm not putting down money for something that has no potential use to me until at least 12 months later. I'm just not that rich.

I'd rather use the money for something else in the meantime, call me crazy

*shrug* oh wells. People have gotten new computers through phone support. I've personally never used phone support, mainly because I have a friend that works in the university tech department. He'll replace things for me quick and you dont have to haggle with Apple Geniuses and convince them that you didnt do this and this damage.

anyways. A student discount gets AppleCare for 240. Pretty reasonable I think. Ebay is another place.

now i just need something else to go wrong so i can get my 32 dollars worth. :)

I'm not a fan of Applecare, but your logic doesn't make sense. Are you saying that Applecare wouldn't be worth it if you bought it towards the end of your first year?

Since the coverage is the same regardless of when you buy it, one could suppose that the $200-300 sum could earn interest...but even at 5%, that would only add up to what, ten bucks?

There are much stronger arguments against Applecare than that. ;)

I would not own an Apple laptop without Apple Care. I have had to use it several times now and some of the repairs would have been in the upper $100's

Is this the new argument? Macs "just work" as long as you use AppleCare? That MB/Ps "last longer" as long as you buy the three year warranty? That an Apple "retains its value" as long as there's a $250 insurance policy attached to it? How do you guys say that stuff with a straight face without mentioning the blatant safety net beneath the big talk? :D

Oh my god people need to quit it with that stupid "I am a huge idiot" rolleyes emoticon. USE SPARINGLY.

Yes, it's extended phone SUPPORT ("hold the mouse button down when you restart ma'am, does that fix your issue?") as you said yourself - that you receive with Applecare. I don't need that. I am Tech Support.

" "

The extended warranty is what I'd buy Applecare for. Personally I have never had a problem phoning apple, whenever the heck I feel like it, if I have an issue.

You don't need Applecare's extended phone support period to "get a new computer" over the phone if it's a warranty issue. You do need Applecare's extended phone support if you are too simple / idle to use Google or our very own Macrumors, however.

Noooo - in fact I'm saying it wouldn't be worth it UNLESS you buy it at the end of the first year... unless you need that phone support so dang much.

If something happens in the first year - so what, you're covered anyway. Thus, no real need to buy upon model purchase. Ok? :)

Completely agree. I've never seen that thing used so much on any forum. A disproportionally high percentage of people here seem to hide behind sarcasm when saying the most mundane things. Grow some spines, folks. Say what you mean, and stand behind it, instead of this passive-aggressive nonsense with infantile rolling eye emoticons.

While I know you're being a bit argumentative for the sake of being argumentative, I completely agree. It can't be both ways. Macs just can't "work" and require extended coverage. Either Apple believes its products are superior and hence don't need extended warranty shenanigans (which is what they are), or Apple doesn't have faith in its product line and advises you to pay up for what could happen.

Now of course the answer is that Apple wants you to believe the latter while practicing the former, as it is a company out for profit. However, that should tell the consumer who is out to save some money a few things. ;) (emoticon used correctly! take note! :p)

Ahh, ok. In which case, I completely agree! :)
