JUST CHILL!!! Go do a search or read the thread entirely... or just read what I say and just quit all the other apps related to iTunes (sizzling keys, synergy, etc.) It's not Apple's fault you left those running while iTunes isn't... geeez.
DinoAdventure said:I wasn't really complaining to Apple, I've never had a problem with Software Update before. Turns out you were right, sizzling keys was the running, that was causing trouble.
I kind of miss the old iTunes interface though..
supergod said:I was foolish enough to download iTunes 5 today before waiting for initial reports. Well, now I pay the price. There are a few major bugs to it. The largest one is that when I plug my 1 week old iPod to sync music, it is not detected by my computer. My iPod displays the "Do not disconnect" graphic but it does not show up on the desktop or in iTunes. So now for the time being I can't update it. In addition to that I am now having problems with touch recognition that I have never had before. The whole clickwheel is functioning screwy. Holding the play button is not powering it off and pressing the menu button is being detected as a clockwise scroll.
I just registered with macrumors only so I could join this discussion, which I found by googling. Because I too encountered the exact same problem, and want to add my own details to see what you think. Yes, it's probably coincidence. And yes, it sure looks like a hardware failure. But could iTunes 5.0 have caused it?
My 4th gen 40G ipod was running [software update] version 3.1, with iTunes 4.9 with no problem. I installed iTunes 5.0, converted my library, and synced. I had about 60 songs to sync -- only a few new, most I had just fixed artists names or added artwork. While syncing, I downloaded iTunes latest free download. While downloading that, I clicked back to the iPod to check my sync progress. At that point, it hung. After a few minutes, I could still hear the disk spinning, and the iPod was pretty hot. There was nothing I could do but disconnect and resest. But I could not reset.
A google led me to a "Troubleshooting your ipod" from peachpit (http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.asp?p=28732&rl=1). I figured out that I had to let the battery drain completely to get any sense back to the iPod. I drained the battery, recharged (via AC), reset, and then had to restore. No biggie, since my iTunes library had all my songs. So I started to resync, but the same thing happened after around 4000/5000 songs.
After another discharge/recharge/reset/restore cycle, I tried some diags and a disk scan as Peachpit showed how to do. The scan passed, as well as the diags -- at least in the cases where I could interpret the results (a "pass" message or a number with units that made sense.) So this time I reverted back to iTunes 4.9. But it stopped syncing early on as well.
At this point, I cannot even restore the ipod. All I see is a folder icon with a URL for apple ipod support. It's definitely dead. Killed by iTunes 5.0. (Probably not. But if that tabloid contacts me, I'll be sure to add my 10 cents.)
