i can't even install it! it says that itunes is still running when its not...im so pissed...

I have the same problem too, tried logging out, restarting, didnt work. Even downloaded the dmg from apple.com and it does the same thing.

What happens when you place your old iTunes in the trash and then try to install it? Don't delete iTunes 4.9, just leave it (and its preferences) in the trash can for a while. :)

... and all the other thousands who still bitch about the same issue that so many people have already said how to alleviate...

JUST CHILL!!! Go do a search or read the thread entirely... or just read what I say and just quit all the other apps related to iTunes (sizzling keys, synergy, etc.) It's not Apple's fault you left those running while iTunes isn't... geeez.

I wasn't really complaining to Apple, I've never had a problem with Software Update before. Turns out you were right, sizzling keys was the running, that was causing trouble.

I kind of miss the old iTunes interface though..

No not you, sorry if I came across harsh. There were just too many people bitching about that without even trying to search what was causing their problem. I am the second person in this thread to write about a solution, that's why I was a bit annoyed. No worries though. :)

I dunno I kinda like the new interface, though I have to admit the corner suck hard and need to be rounded.

I was foolish enough to download iTunes 5 today before waiting for initial reports. Well, now I pay the price. There are a few major bugs to it. The largest one is that when I plug my 1 week old iPod to sync music, it is not detected by my computer. My iPod displays the "Do not disconnect" graphic but it does not show up on the desktop or in iTunes. So now for the time being I can't update it. In addition to that I am now having problems with touch recognition that I have never had before. The whole clickwheel is functioning screwy. Holding the play button is not powering it off and pressing the menu button is being detected as a clockwise scroll.

I just registered with macrumors only so I could join this discussion, which I found by googling. Because I too encountered the exact same problem, and want to add my own details to see what you think. Yes, it's probably coincidence. And yes, it sure looks like a hardware failure. But could iTunes 5.0 have caused it?

My 4th gen 40G ipod was running [software update] version 3.1, with iTunes 4.9 with no problem. I installed iTunes 5.0, converted my library, and synced. I had about 60 songs to sync -- only a few new, most I had just fixed artists names or added artwork. While syncing, I downloaded iTunes latest free download. While downloading that, I clicked back to the iPod to check my sync progress. At that point, it hung. After a few minutes, I could still hear the disk spinning, and the iPod was pretty hot. There was nothing I could do but disconnect and resest. But I could not reset.

A google led me to a "Troubleshooting your ipod" from peachpit (http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.asp?p=28732&rl=1). I figured out that I had to let the battery drain completely to get any sense back to the iPod. I drained the battery, recharged (via AC), reset, and then had to restore. No biggie, since my iTunes library had all my songs. So I started to resync, but the same thing happened after around 4000/5000 songs.

After another discharge/recharge/reset/restore cycle, I tried some diags and a disk scan as Peachpit showed how to do. The scan passed, as well as the diags -- at least in the cases where I could interpret the results (a "pass" message or a number with units that made sense.) So this time I reverted back to iTunes 4.9. But it stopped syncing early on as well.

At this point, I cannot even restore the ipod. All I see is a folder icon with a URL for apple ipod support. It's definitely dead. Killed by iTunes 5.0. (Probably not. But if that tabloid contacts me, I'll be sure to add my 10 cents.)

4th gen 40gb here as well.

yesterday i tried to update a playlist and it froze, upon resets (menu and select) it now just gives "folder!"

I updated the 5.0 as soon as it came out and had no problem initially. The day before this happened though the battery did fully die.

any tips on how to make an ipod without any music lose its charge?

I've got this one solved for ya. I have this problem every so often, probably because I tend to unplug my ipod without "ejecting" it more often than I should

Open up Disk Utility (in apps/utilities), select the iPod, hit "repair disk". That will take all of about 5 seconds (at leas ton my mini) and it will immediately appear on the desktop.

gluck on the rest.

I'm still having my odd issue, though I'm not sure if it's my iTunes 5, or all of my OS needs fixing. I'm having three main problems:

1. Neither one of my iPods will show up in iPod updater, though they show up normally on the desktop.

2. They show up as "generic" iPod icons in the iTunes source window, not the proper icons.

3. The option for "show album art on iPod" isn't under iTunes pref when a iPod Photo or Nano is plugged in.

I plugged them both into a friend's iBook to update them, and had zero problems.

Trashed com.apple.iPod.plist, and iTunes.plist, to no avail. I actually deleted and reinstalled iTunes as well.

I have no idea what's wrong here, but its quite frustrating.

"iTunes Broke My Clickwheel" sounds about as likely as any of the headlines on a supermarket tabloid.

How about this one: "iTunes 5.0 broke my PDA". Right around the same time that my iPod died after syncing for the first time under iTunes 5.0, I found that my PDA had completely reset itself (akin to an iPod restore) for no apparent reason. Nevermind that the PDA has never even been connected to my mac or any computer running iTunes; it must have been the fault of iTunes 5.0. ;)

ITunes 5.0.1 update available via Software Update...
also a new Windoze version available as well.

hope this fixed all the problems people have noticed.

update installed fine here - but I didn't have any problems with 5.0 either.
