I am required to use institutional public wifi at my work. In iOS 11 There appears to be a problem with the security settings and auto login. Specifically, public wifi networks which require a browser login will not connect fully. This has completely screwed me over. I don’t know whether this is a bug or a security feature, but either way it is unacceptable. Do not upgrade if you need to use public wifi.

Yes, because obviously your experience means that everyone is affected similarly!

So to torpedo the hysteria...

iPhone 7+, iOS11 release (I have no use for betas)
a Cisco-based lightweight wireless system
the SSID in question requires a login via a "browser" (the normal iOS redirect)

And it works just fine.

What happens if you "forget" the network on the phone, and try to connect again?

I've been on countless public wifi AP's with captive logins over the entire period of the beta and several just today on GM (roaming abroad and the public wifi is generally faster than the cell does). I can honestly say I have not had any issues with captive logins.

I definitely get your frustration but going from "my work wifi doesn't work" to "don't upgrade" is a BIG stretch.

This on behalf of everyone here… Other people have posted on the Apple Support forms as well.
[doublepost=1505946895][/doublepost]I have tried:
Restarting
Forgetting the network
Disabling autojoin
Disabling wifi location services
Resetting network settings
Quitting settings
And wifi assist is off.

Does this open in the settings app, or do you have to open it in through a browser? This bug is limited only to networks that require users to log in through a browser.

So log in through the browser.
It disconnects. That’s the bug. It is impossible to log in through the browser because it never gets to that point.
[doublepost=1505947435][/doublepost]Also, if you update on the public wifi network you won’t experience the bug immediately, because it will remember your MAC address for a set period.

Hey, honestly, I’m not being facetious. I don’t doubt for a moment you’re having a problem and, if you are, others are too. I would be horribly frustrated as well. I’d likely ask around for help though, rather than declare an operating system broken.

Unfortunately I have no help to offer you. I wish I did.

Although people will experience different things, I appreciate your heads up in regards to this. I'm not sure if everybody will experience, but it never hurts to read other people's experience and heed them if upgraded.

Connect your phone to iTunes and wipe your phone. Than download a copy of iOS 11, put your phone in to recovery mode and update it through iTunes again.

Obviously something got bugged during installation of iOS 11.

Now it’s time to do a proper fresh reinstall. Other wise you’ll be driving in circles with this issue.

iOS11 doesn't let apps see the MAC address. Unsure if that could be related but throwing it out anyway.

this is very useful info. thanks for posting.
in the OP case, this could be the problem indeed, it depends how the sign in / log in screen is generated.

there have been cases where this happened to me at times across most of the iOS systems.
what has (sometimes) worked in those cases for me was to:
1 manually forget the network
2 do not set anything like automatically connect to previous networks
3 in Safari app controls delete cache
4 nuke the Network settings in Settings/General/Reset
(5 in case you have Keychain Access toggled on in iOS, AND, if you have also logged onto that network with your mac sometime before, then you may also need to delete that mac side remembered network from your Network pane on your mac as well).

Also just tested, web login popped up, details entered, wifi connected.

Did the login page appear in settings? Some networks force the user to go to a browser and log in there. This bug only applies to those networks.

Sometimes Apples captive login pop-up fails to start, and then you are able to open it through a normal Safari browser session, just remember to connect through a non-ssl website.
If the captive window is blank, then there might be a bug in Apples software, but also on the captive portal software.
However if you connect via 802.1X protocol, you may need to download a new profile from a webpage, if the EAP or RADIUS server can't authenticate you correctly.

this is great advice and know-how.
thanks from all of us who occasionally have this problem.
more often than not, for me it has always been poor coding on the local server's software that fails to take into account mac and even iOS's standard handshakes.
your advise about connecting to non-ssl website was brilliant as well. thanks.

Haven't been able to connect to any of the McDs WiFis since upgrading. Once connected, it usually opens a web page where you click "Get Connected" to finalize the connection. The page never appears with my iOS 11 (on an SE).

I had to go to the browser. This is a corporate wifi which acts in the same way. Not sure if that makes a difference?

I believe Apple has added some “no track” features to 11 and just maybe your corporate connection has some tracking features you don’t know about. Maybe that’s part of the issue?

Awful OS in general -

In specific regards to this issue ; When I disable wifi / it connects automatically anytime a random wifi network becomes available to connect to.

Any random network? Or only ones you've connected to before?
