I do. Have a 16" AOC USB monitor.

Keyboard (Logitech K760), mouse and monitor fit easily into my (old) laptop bag with the Mini.

Added a 15' cord for ease of use.

It's slick!

Does it work only with the USB Monitor? No other monitors are used from displayport/HDMI?

I choose to use a 16" USB monitor while travelling. It's thin and reliable. There is no power cord.

There are, of course, many monitors to choose from --- while at my desk I have two 24" monitors which I like very much (HDMI and Displayport to HDMI). I do NOT want to transport either when going 'mobile.'

Hope this helps.

Yes I move mine around, not frequently maybe twice a month. I have two hd TV's in different properties and a monitor, the mini gets carried around between sites as necessary. I take the keyboard and mouse too.

I have taken mine with me to places, but not on a daily basis. Normally, I only take it when visiting family on extended visits, who I know have a place to hook it up to. The fact that I could carry it around with me somewhat, was one of the reasons I chose it in the first place. If required, I could take it and plug it in anywhere there's a monitor or TV, library, hotel room, etc. Inconvenient? Yes, but I would only do that if that was the only option, like when the Internet at home goes out for a week:mad::mad::mad:

I have looked into taking an old 19" Dell monitor and attaching it to the lid of a hard cased shell, like a brief case. Then put the Mini in the bottom with a powerstrip and the keyboard. However, most places nowadays have access to an HDTV and it hasn't been necessary, and my iPad covers most of my needs when away from home.

Similar Idea for a "Portable" Desktop

Interesting suitcase setup for rugged off-site application, I think!

Really? Do you live under a desk in your classroom?

Really…..

How long does it take to remove a Mac Mini from a bag, plug it into the power, hook up the permanently installed projector and audio cables, and plug in a USB keyboard with a mouse already connected?

About as long as it would take to do the same with a laptop. Just a couple of minutes, no scrambling under a desk involved.

It was just a joke, man! You took it way too seriously.

When the Mac Mini was released in 1965 it matched my needs so I bought one, my first computer.

It couldn't have been portable, it would have filled a small (or large) warehouse if it was built then.

Would like to have seen one anyway though.

How about an iPad for a monitor, an iPhone for the trackpad, and an iPad mini for the keyboard?

Doesn't everyone already carry those?

I currently own a 2012 Mini and things I like about this little machine are:

- Easy to setup, with only power cord (no brick!!!) & HDMI cable and you're good to go
- OSX with Bluetooth peripherals are very easy to pair and connect to, no cables are needed
- The small speaker inside is really really important if you do not happen to have any speakers around

Recently I was tempted to buy a notebook because of its portability (13" MBA or rMBP), but their price seems expensive compared to a Mac Mini. One special thing about Mini is that you can choose to use your own keyboard, mouse, and monitor. To me this is a plus as if one of them is broken, you can just easily buy another one. However if something is broken with your notebook, you probably will have to send them back to Apple. Not to mention that you can upgrade its RAM and HDD pretty easily.

So I was wondering, do people actually carry their Mac Mini between places (like from home to office)? Or is it actually better to just own a macbook because it is also can be easily docked into a monitor but you also get the portability of a notebook?

The Mini is cheap, small, and light enough that transporting it wouldn't be much of a hassle...as long as you have a keyboard, mouse, and monitor at both locations. Heck...for the price of the laptop you could have two Mini's!

How about using a pocket projector with your mini?

Fairly cheap, HDMI, batteries recharge via USB, and really small.
(Dimensions: 3.9" w x 3.8" d x .89" h; .5 lbs. )

I question 80" in anything but a pitch black room, but 30" in room lighting seems right.
You may be sorely disappointed by the native resolution of the projector (most of these small things are 480p native), plus it's going to be pretty dim until the screen gets pretty small.
